KUALA LUMPUR, June 10 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia is seeking strengthened economic and trade ties with Poland while reaffirming the importance of free and open trade, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and Polish President Andrzej Duda said here on Tuesday.
They reaffirmed the importance of adhering to internationally accepted trade norms and multilateral engagement and cooperation, as this would be mutually beneficial, the leaders said in a joint statement during Duda's official visit to Malaysia from June 9 to 11.
"The leaders reiterated their unwavering commitment to open and inclusive trade and a fair, rules-based international trading system. They strongly reaffirmed their support for the swift advancement of the Malaysia-EU Free Trade Agreement (MEUFTA) negotiations and stressed the importance of concluding the agreement at the earliest opportunity," they said.
"Both sides agreed to promote balanced trade by reducing economic barriers, enhancing consultation mechanisms between relevant ministries, and fostering collaboration amongst business communities," they said, adding that friendly bilateral cooperation will facilitate cooperation in a number of new and emerging fields such as the digitalization of public services, green transition, particularly the hydrogen economy and renewable energy and the maritime economy.
Anwar and Duda also agreed to cooperate on security matters, including enhancing the exchange of experiences and coordination in combating crime, including organized and international crime.
Poland is Malaysia's important trading partner among EU member states. Malaysia's main exports to Poland include electrical and electronic products, rubber products and machinery, while main imports from Poland consist of machinery, equipment and spare parts, electrical and electronic products, and transport equipment.

Outrage as Facebook group with over 12,000 members targets minors with obscene posts, Wanita PKR calls for crackdown

KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 — Wanita PKR has called for urgent action from authorities following the discovery of a Facebook group allegedly sharing photos of underage schoolchildren with sexually explicit commentary. In a statement today, the party's women's wing urged the police, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), and the Women, Family and Community Development Ministry to take firm and immediate action against any activity that promotes sexual crimes against minors, according to a report published today in Free Malaysia Today. 'Wanita PKR also calls on parents and all of society to be constantly alert and responsible for the safety of children from sexual violence,' it said. '(This includes) monitoring social media for groups with elements of obscenity, grooming and sexual harassment, and for comments that insult the modesty of children,' it said in a statement today. The group, named 'Group Budak2 Sekolah Rendah', which is now inaccessible, reportedly had over 12,000 members and contained photos of minors in school uniforms, traditional outfits, sportswear, and casual attire, many accompanied by inappropriate captions. The matter came to public attention after rapper Ariz Ramli, known as Caprice, received an Instagram tip-off and reported the group to the MCMC and police. Social media influencer Wee Yun Nee, or Mekyun, also spoke out after discovering childhood photos of herself on the page. The sharing of children's images without consent for exploitative purposes violates the Child Act 2001 and Section 211 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which deals with offensive online content.

PETRONAS ramps up global LNG push to support China's energy transition

A Petronas staff member walks past the PETRONAS logo at the Petronas Twin Towers following the group's financial results announcement on March 13. — AZMAN GHANI/The Star PETRONAS, Malaysia's State-owned energy group, will accelerate the expansion of its global liquefied natural gas (LNG) portfolio to support China's growing energy needs, as the world's second-largest economy deepens efforts to shift toward cleaner fuels and strengthen energy security, said a senior executive. In 2024, PETRONAS exported 8 million metric tons of LNG to China, accounting for about 10 percent of the country's total LNG imports for the year, according to the Kuala Lumpur-headquartered company. In addition to ensuring long-term supply capability from its LNG complex by developing several new gas fields in Malaysia, including Timi, Kasawari and Jerun, PETRONAS will advance additional upstream projects such as the Rosmari and Marjoram fields, aimed at bolstering production capacity and meeting future demand, said Shamsairi Ibrahim, vice-president of PETRONAS' LNG marketing and trading, gas and maritime business. "Internationally, we are broadening our supply network, particularly in North America. A key milestone will be the first LNG cargo from our joint venture in Alberta-based LNG Canada, expected by mid-2025," said Ibrahim. Once operational, the project is expected to add 14 million metric tons per annum to PETRONAS' global LNG portfolio, significantly strengthening its export capacity and diversifying its supply base. To better serve Chinese clients and address global LNG demand in a more sustainable way, the company is also enhancing its delivery capabilities. This includes deploying three new LNG vessels to improve shipments to Shenergy Group's Wuhaogou terminal in Shanghai and to supply inland cities along the Yangtze River via creative pipeline systems. PETRONAS' efforts are further supported by its partnership with Tiger Gas, a Shanghai-based company with multiple investments in Malaysia, including LNG filling facilities in Bintulu. The collaboration enhances cross-border LNG infrastructure and reinforces shared commitments to clean energy development. One of the key outcomes of this collaboration is the development of a specially designed LNG vessel capable of carrying around 600 containers. Unlike conventional LNG carriers that require deep-water ports, this vessel can navigate directly into the Yangtze River, expanding LNG accessibility across China's non-coastal regions. Apart from LNG, the Malaysian energy group also supplies petrochemicals, crude oil and lubricants to the Chinese market. It is advancing marine LNG solutions such as bunkering services and expanding its LNG fleet with new LNG carriers. Four of these vessels are currently under construction at Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co Ltd, a major shipyard based in Shanghai. Ibrahim noted that geopolitical uncertainties and rising energy security concerns have prompted many countries, including China, to prioritize domestic energy sources. This trend has introduced greater caution around long-term LNG contracts and tempered appetite for new import commitments, creating a more complex and unpredictable global LNG market. "Despite these challenges, PETRONAS remains confident in the value of its differentiated LNG and clean energy portfolio," he said, stressing that the company believes its continued commitment to providing reliable, sustainable energy solutions aligns well with China's long-term energy transition strategy. - China Daily/ANN

LuLu Hypermarket Shuts Down CapSquare KL Outlet; Officially Exiting Malaysian Retail Market

If you haven't noticed, LuLu Hypermarket has been closing down its Malaysian stores lately. These recent closures are because the company is officially exiting the country's retail market According to news reports, LuLu Group is shutting down its hypermarkets in Malaysia, ultimately closing its retail division. However, the company will continue to operate its wholesale division in the country. A spokesperson from the LuLu Group's Malaysian operations confirmed the news. The most recent LuLu Hypermarket outlet to shut its doors was the CapSquare location, which ceased operations on 9th June 2025 (Monday). The United Arab Emirates-based company first appeared in Malaysia in 2016, opening its flagship store at CapSquare in Kuala Lumpur. The company specialises in carrying Middle Eastern brands and products. Besides offering household items, each store featured hot food counters and in-house bakeries. By 2022, it operated six outlets nationwide, including a store in Toppen Mall in Johor Bahru. When the company first entered the Malaysian retail market, it pledged to invest RM1.3 billion to open ten outlets within the first five years of operation. However, a quick search online showed that LuLu Hypermarkets has been slowly closing down its Malaysian outlets since early this year. Before the closures, the stores held various promotions and clearance sales. Malaysia is one of the four countries outside the Middle East that operate LuLu Group outlets, with the other three being India, Indonesia and Suriname. Unfortunately, the company may also be exiting the Indonesian retail market as one of the two outlets in the country ceased operations back in April. Meanwhile, there are reports that the second LuLu Group outlet has begun clearance sales and discount programmes. Online, customers expressed disappointment over the closures, noting that LuLu Hypermarket was a good place to shop for ingredients like nuts, spices and cheeses. What are your thoughts on this?
