Footy great Ben Cousins is recovering after being rushed to hospital for surgery on a hernia that left him in agony after he put off treatment because he was 'in denial'.
The former West Coast and Richmond star turned footy commentator had the procedure last Friday in Perth after the ailment left him in such a bad way he was 'ready to pass out' after attending the State of Origin match last Wednesday night.
'I'm a little tender actually. I went in for a hernia op on Friday — not much fun,' he told Triple M.
'I had a little bubble or lump pop up where it probably shouldn't a couple of months ago, and I've been in denial, if you like.
'I hadn't gone in and had the ultrasound and I thought I'd put it off until the end of the footy season, I'd hang on for 12 more games — you'd swear I was still playing.
'But I went to the State of Origin on Wednesday night, it was a great game, got home, and then I went in to put my daughter to sleep, and I sat on her bed, and then out of nowhere, this pain came.

'I may have been in as much pain (before in my life), but I have never been in more. I was ready to pass out, all this sort of stuff, couldn't talk.'
Despite the pain, Cousins went to sleep sat home — but took himself to hospital last Thursday morning.
'So, the next day I did my best to try and get seen as quickly as possible, so I went in (to hospital) the next day,' he said.

Shortly after their news became public, a family friend revealed to Daily Mail Australia that Hird told his friends there was no infidelity involved in the decision to go their separate ways - and that he still treasures Tania. 'He is telling friends that he will always love Tania,' the source revealed. 'James thinks she has done an amazing job of raising their kids. 'Neither one of them has cheated, there's no third party involved, but after 27 years they've simply grown apart.' Another source with ties to the Hird family said the couple were eager to keep their parting of the ways out of the spotlight until all of their children - Stephanie, Tom, Alex and William - had finished school. That source also maintained there was some tension between James and Tania over his interest in returning to the footy world as he was tied to a coaching position with Port Melbourne last year. Earlier this week, Hird opened up about his surprise move with Port. 'They've been good to Tom and I felt like I could make a difference here. To do something with your son is very special,' he told News Corp. 'This is a journey in itself, being part of Port Melbourne Football Club and trying to create a good football program where we can have some success and teach and help players learn. Penrith premiership prop Joel Clinton has shed light on an explosive incident during his footy career, detailing a heated moment with former Panthers coach Matt Elliott and two of his toughest teammates. Clinton, who played 241 matches for Penrith, opened up about his final season with the Panthers in 2007 under coach Elliott while appearing on the Andy Raymond Unfiltered podcast. 'I remember he kicked a garbage bin across the room after one game,' Clinton recalled. 'We were up at halftime by 18 points or something like that, and we lost that game. 'Matty Elliott was a pretty aggressive coach and he kicked the garbage bin across the room and it ended up hitting big Franky Pritchard straight in the head. 'I remember Franky Pritchard looked over and he wanted to absolutely rip his head off - and Tony Puletua had to grab him and stop him and say "No mate, sit down". 'Lucky Big T was in the room that day because Franky Pritchard has got a bit of a background and he would have done some damage.' Later in the episode, Clinton took aim at former Broncos coach Ivan Henjak for 'f**king him around' during his spell with the club. Clinton was recruited by Wayne Bennett in 2008, but the supercoach moved to the Dragons the following year. 'That next year I really knuckled down,' Clinton said. 'My stats were great, I was one of Brisbane's best forwards, but Ivan Henjak didn't see eye to eye with me.' 'He upset quite a few boys there, I had another year on my contract, but I asked for a release. '[Ex-Panthers coach] Johnny Lang had called me up and asked me to come to Souths for three years on a good deal, good coin, and I knew my time was up with Ivan. 'I asked for three releases, and he said "no, we're keeping you".' Clinton believed that he'd have to see out his entire contract in Brisbane - but then got a shock call from his manager during Mad Monday celebrations. 'It came to the end of 2009, and I got a phone call from my manager, I'd been on the p**s for 24 hours straight, and he said "yeah, they don't want you next year",' Clinton said. 'By then all the salary cap was gone, there was no money left at Souths, there was a little at Wests, but to get the money I was after at 28, I had to go to the UK, purely because of [Ivan Henjak]. Two of the AFL's biggest stars texted their coaches with an alarming message - and now you can see their VERY revealing responses
AFL stars Steele Sidebottom and Rory Lobb were recently asked to text their respective coaches on the spot with a request that should have set off alarm bells - and the responses spoke volumes about the two club bosses. As part of a prank on Channel Nine's show Players, Collingwood veteran Sidebottom and Western Bulldogs utility Lobb messaged Craig McRae and Luke Beveridge to see if they could borrow their cars for three days with zero explanation. Both were unsure what the response would be, and Lobb was visibly shocked that Beveridge - who has a reputation as a hard taskmaster - was so accommodating. 'Of course Lobby,' was Beveridge's simple reply, which came with a laughing emoji. Lobb took the emoji to mean his coach might have thought the text wasn't 100 per cent on the level. 'He said he was about to drive it over to me. Feel like he knows I'm a bit of a larrikin,' Lobb said. 'I think he knew that I was taking the p**s because I do that a little bit.' McRae's detailed reply to Sidebottom summed up his caring nature. 'Are you OK? Of course mate, you can have it as long as you need,' he began. 'I've got a guy at Ringwood Mazda (car dealership) who can get you a car if you need one longer. 'Let me know where you want me to drop it (off). Please no burnouts, I've seen you drive. Hope everything is OK.' In April, Lobb sported the AFL's worst haircut - an eye-catching electric-blue dye job - ahead of the 100-year anniversary clash against Collingwood at the MCG. The towering footy star then made that bizarre look tame in comparison by revealing a bright-red lobster dyed on his newly bleached locks. It comes as Sidebottom, 34, continues to palm away father time. He is edging towards 350 career games and has been a standout for the ladder- leading Magpies all year. Meanwhile, McRae showed his emotional side last month in an interview following the sudden passing of Adam Selwood. 'There's no book written on this stuff. We got the news and it was horrible,' McRae said as he fought back tears in a press conference after a win over Adelaide. 'We didn't really know what to do to be honest, other than maybe give it space to see where it fits with all of us. 'It's horrible, there is such sadness....'I just want to send my love to the (entire) Selwood family.'
