Zara Qairina death probe: No one will be shielded, deputy minister tells Parliament
Its deputy minister Wong Kah Woh said with respect to incidents that occur, whether disciplinary cases or bullying in schools, the ministry has established clear guidelines and circulars that are enforced from time to time.
"The Education Ministry will not, and has never, attempted to protect anyone involved, contrary to certain claims that have been made by certain quarters," he said in reply to a supplementary question from Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal (Warisan-Semporna) during Ministers' Question Time.
Shafie wanted to know the concrete actions taken on the case of Zara Qairina and how the ministry plans to tackle the issue of bullying at schools
Wong stressed that at all levels and at all material times, the ministry remains ready to cooperate fully with the police and to assist in every aspect of the investigation into this case.
"In the case of Zara, we now know that the matter is under police investigation.
"This issue is currently being handled by the police, and the Education Ministry will leave it to the authorities to carry out their investigations," he said, adding that the ministry will not compromise on the issue related to bullying.
The lawyer representing the family of the late Zara Qairina said an inquest may be requested if the results of her post-mortem examination are deemed unsatisfactory by the family.
Lawyer Shahlan Jufri said a complete post-mortem report is not yet available, as the procedure was only completed at 7.30pm on Sunday (Aug 10) after beginning at 11am.
"The complete post-mortem report is not yet available. It still needs to be prepared," said Shahlan.
On Aug 8, the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) instructed the immediate exhumation and post-mortem of deceased Form One student Zara Qairina by the police.
Zara Qairina had been pronounced dead at a hospital in Sabah on July 17, a day after she reportedly fell from the third floor of her school dormitory.
Her tragic death went viral and sparked mass reactions on social media, which included widespread allegations of bullying.

KUALA LUMPUR: All mosques and surau under the supervision of the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (Jakim), and the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Department (Jawi), have been instructed to hold 'solat hajat' (prayer of need) and Yasin recitation sessions this Thursday (Aug 14), for the late Zara Qairina Mahathir. "May the prayers bring peace to the family members and serve as a source of rewards for the deceased," he said, in a statement, tonight. Last Friday, the Attorney General's Chambers (A-GC) said that the body of Zara Qairina needed to be exhumed, to allow a post-mortem examination to be conducted. The A-GC added that further police investigations were necessary, to ensure a thorough examination of all aspects of the case. Following this, on Saturday, the teenager's body was exhumed from the Tanjung Ubi Muslim Cemetery in Kampung Mesapol, Sipitang, and taken to Queen Elizabeth I Hospital for the post-mortem. Her remains were reburied at the same cemetery early Monday morning. Zara Qairina was confirmed dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on July 17. The student had been taken to the hospital after being found severely injured and unconscious in a drain near her school dormitory, in Papar, at 4 am on July 16. – Bernama

Education Ministry to work with stakeholders to clarify guidelines on handling bullying
KUALA LUMPUR: The Education Ministry will conduct engagement sessions with all stakeholders to explain the current guidelines for handling bullying offences, says Minister Fadhlina Sidek ( pic ). She said the move was in response to one of the four demands in the #JusticeForZara memorandum submitted to the ministry by a group of student activists here on Tuesday (Aug 12). "The ministry is also open to views and suggestions to improve the existing guidelines," she said in a Facebook post. On the demand for a comprehensive reform of the national education system, particularly in relation to bullying issues, Fadhlina said the ministry had announced several important measures to enhance safety in all educational institutions under its purview. "This includes conducting safety audits, improving the bullying complaint system, setting up a safety reform committee, taking stern action such as suspending and expelling students involved in bullying, and ensuring psychosocial support aspects are strengthened at every level," she said. On the demand to make mandatory and periodic training for all teachers, administrators and wardens on crisis intervention, student emotional management and professional procedures in handling bullying complaints, Fadhlina said training aspects would continue to be enhanced to ensure the readiness of school administrators, teachers and wardens. She also said that all educational institutions under the ministry's purview must comply with the guidelines for tackling bullying offences. Regarding the demand for the Education Ministry to provide an open explanation to the public about the case of the late Zara Qairina Mahathir, she said the ministry would fully cooperate with the police investigation, and updates on the case would be communicated periodically by the police. "The Education Ministry welcomes the police's initiative to set up a special task force to handle the case involving the late Zara Qairina," said Fadhlina, who met with the representatives of the student activists in Parliament to further discuss all concerns raised in the memorandum. - Bernama
