The South Sudan People's Defense Forces (SSPDF) General Court Martial in Western Bahr el Ghazal concludes
Subsequently, the military court adjudicated 20 criminal cases, convicting nine members of the SSPDF, stripping them of their ranks and dismissing them from military service.
Notably, the General Court Martial delivered verdicts on two cases related to sexual and gender-based violence, resulting in convictions of seven and 10 years, respectively. Additionally, a conflict related sexual violence case involving multiple assailants and an underage victim was adjudicated, a first of its kind for such military court martials in South Sudan.
The highest-ranking member of the SSPDF convicted was a Lieutenant Colonel, for the loss of a weapon. Two civilians in detention were released from military custody since they do not fall within the jurisdiction of a military court, while another civilian on trial for killing two SSPDF soldiers was sentenced to two years imprisonment and ordered to pay 62 heads of cattle or a monetary equivalent as blood compensation to the victims' families.
The Court also heard six cases involving conflict related crimes committed during clashes in February 2025 in Kwajiena village, Jur River county. A lack of identification of assailants by victims, despite strong testimonies, did not lead to prosecutorial action in this regard. However, the hearing resulted in a directive to the state government to award financial compensation to all victims in accordance with South Sudan's civil procedure code.
The General Court Martial team included two female judge-advocates to ensure that both female and male victims and witnesses were supported during the process. All victims also had access to two civilian victims' counsel, who provided free legal advice and actively participated in the proceedings to protect victim rights and help them navigate the justice process.
This military court was followed by a civil-military dialogue in Wau with a focus on joint efforts to combat sexual violence. The aim was to strengthen trust between uniformed personnel and communities, as well as obtain real time feedback on the impact of such military justice interventions on host populations.
The Wau General Court Martial was funded by the generous support of the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Juba. In particular, it builds on the work of similar military proceedings that took place in Wau in 2022, which resulted in convictions of eight members of the SSPDF for murder. The convicted soldiers were stripped of their ranks and dismissed from the SSPDF.
As part of its ongoing efforts to strengthen justice mechanisms and rule of law processes, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) also provided funding for victims and witnesses to receive psychosocial support before, during, and after trial.

Israel is pressuring Gaza ceasefire talks by forcing residents to 'leave' and floating the idea of relocating them to African countries such as South Sudan, Palestinian political sources have said. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu repeated that his army would 'allow' Palestinians to leave Gaza. At the same time, AP reported that Israel is in talks with South Sudan to host Gazans. The reports came days after Israel announced plans to reoccupy Gaza, amid renewed efforts to secure a ceasefire in the devastated territory, where Israeli forces have killed more than 61,000 Palestinians since October 2023. 'There are desperate attempts to improve Israel's negotiating terms,' one of the Palestinian political sources told The National on Wednesday. 'What Netanyahu is doing is an attempt to show he is taking action amid his internal crisis: what to do with the Gaza war,' said the official, a former minister. Calls to forcibly resettle Palestinians from Gaza have previously drawn widespread condemnation, especially from Arab countries, who reject the idea of "emptying" Gaza, as previously suggested by US President Donald Trump. Mr Netanyahu told a televised interview that 'Israel will give them the opportunity to leave," adding that he felt he was on a 'historic and spiritual mission,' and was 'very' attached to the vision of a Greater Israel, which includes parts of Jordan and Egypt. UN chief puts Israel 'on notice' over sexual violence by armed forces
United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres has placed Israel"on notice" for possible inclusion in the UN's "blacklist" of countries and groups suspected of committing sexual violence in armed conflict, a letter posted by Israel's ambassador to the body showed. In his letter to Ambassador Danny Danon, Mr Guterres said he was "gravely concerned" about reports of violations against Palestinians by the Israeli military and security forces in several prisons, a detention centre and a military base. The UN chief said Israel could be listed as abusers in his next report on sexual violence in conflict "due to significant concerns of patterns of certain forms of sexual violence that have been consistently documented by the United Nations". 'Cases documented by the United Nations indicate patterns of sexual violence such as genital violence, prolonged forced nudity and repeated strip searches conducted in an abusive and degrading manner,' Mr Guterres said. Israel has denied access to UN monitors and Mr Guterres said this made it difficult to make a "definitive determination" about the patterns, trends and use of sexual violence by Israeli forces. He called on the Israeli government to take the necessary measures to end all acts of sexual violence and allow investigations. In March, UN-backed human rights groups accused Israel of sexual and gender-based violence. The Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory documented violations and accused Israeli forces of rape and sexual violence against Palestinian detainees. Last year, the Israeli army said it had detained nine soldiers over the alleged sexual abuse of a Palestinian detainee at the notorious Sde Teiman prison. At the time, Israeli media published a video appearing to show soldiers sexually assaulting a male prisoner, with the US State Department describing it as "horrific". Mr Danon dismissed the concerns as baseless accusations. "The UN must focus on the shocking war crimes and sexual violence of Hamas and the release of all hostages. Hamas was also listed in the report as a group "credibly suspected of committing or being responsible for patterns of rape or other forms of sexual violence" in armed conflict. The inclusion of the group comes after recently published reports documenting alleged sexual violence during the October 7, 2023 attack and against hostages in captivity. Reuters reported that Mr Guterres had also issued a similar warning to Russia. The UN chief wrote that he was "gravely concerned about credible information of violations by Russian armed and security forces and affiliated armed groups" primarily against Ukrainian prisoners of war, in 50 official and 22 unofficial detention facilities in Ukraine and Russia.
