Leeds [UK], June 18 (ANI): As Team India gears up for a crucial five-match Test series against England on English soil, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) offered fans a light-hearted glimpse into the minds of the players.
In a video posted on the BCCI's official X handle on Wednesday, Indian cricketers were asked to name the top three things that come to their mind when they think of England.
From cricket-specific elements to personal preferences, the responses were a blend of nostalgia, admiration, and anticipation.
Newly-appointed Test captain Shubman Gill was quick to list the Dukes ball as his first thought.
'The weather, always changing, which is exciting and tough,' he added, before concluding with the 'atmosphere of the crowd,' capturing the essence of playing Test cricket in England.
New entrant to the Test squad, Sai Sudharsa,n kept it simple. 'Weather, hot chocolate, and Dukes,' he smiled, reflecting a first-timer's appreciation for England's unique vibe.
All-rounder Washington Sundar had cricket and cuisine on his mind. 'Swing and seam, India winning a lot of games over here, and food,' he said
Seamer Prasidh Krishna echoed the sentiment around the Duke's ball and English weather.
He added a more personal touch, 'The coffee, I would say. Like, walk around the city and enjoy a coffee.'
Comeback man Karun Nair said, 'It'll be character, test, and culture.'
Young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal offered a more poetic take.
'Beautiful, Lord's, houses,' he said, with a clear fondness for the aesthetics of England, particularly the historic home of cricket.
Always grounded, Shardul Thakur focused on nature and comfort.
'Greenery here, coffee, when I go out for a walk, I can think of a coffee, holding a cup of coffee, sipping it through, then, of course, weather,' he noted.

Gill, the new No 4 for India

CHENNAI: The No. 4 position in Test cricket is the format's holy grail. Sure, there were a few great pre-War No. 4s (Denis Compton and Wally Hammond) but the idea of a No. 4 being one of the side's best bats was a more modern phenomenon with its roots around the late 1980s. Sachin Tendulkar is of course the gold standard. He scored 13,492 runs in that position, almost 4000 clear of Mahela Jayawardene another giant who had made the No. 4 his postcode for 15 years. Out of the top 13 run-scorers in the format's history, seven have had an extended run in that position. From an Indian perspective, the No. 4 has played a big role in multiple ways. Batsmanship, leadership, charismatic figures, the biggest egos in the room as well as tasked with the role of selling all kinds of consumer goods to the hoi polloi. Virat Kohli, Sachin Tendulkar, Gundappa Viswanath, Dilip Vengsarkar... India's batting royalty have all featured in this position. In fact, in India's maiden Test back in 1932, the captain was somebody who came out to bat at No. 4. CK Nayudu, an Indian cricketing aristocrat who wore several hats. This crash course in the history of the No. 4 is a roundabout way of saying why Shubman Gill is the next cab of the No. 4 rank. "I think there's still a discussion going on for No. 3," vice-captain Rishabh Pant said in a press conference two days before the beginning of the five-match Test series against England on Friday. "But No. 4 and No. 5 are fixed. Shubman is going to bat at No. 4, and I'm going to stay at No. 5 as of now." There is one big difference, though, between Shubman and almost everybody who made the No. 4 their own. Most of the others weren't in leadership roles when they assumed the No. 4. They were all fairly early into their careers. They didn't have the pressure of expectation on their shoulders when they were asked to walk out at No. 4.

'Redundant Rhetoric': Priyank Panchal Takes Sly Dig At Commentators, Lauds Stuart Broad

Last Updated: Priyank Panchal has lauded Stuart Broad for comparing Jasprit Bumrah's delivery stride to Glenn McGrath, highlighting rare cricket insights. Former Gujarat opener Priyank Panchal has lauded England pacer Stuart Broad for comparing Jasprit Bumrah's delivery stride to that of Australia's Glenn McGrath, adding that such insights are rare in today's cricket when 'redundant rhetoric' has become a part of broadcasting. Ahead of the five-Test series between India and England, there is plenty of attention on Bumrah, who was adjudged Player of the Series in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which ended earlier this year. Broad has analysed Bumrah's bowling, noting that the latter runs at 70 miles an hour and hits the pitch at 90. Broad spoke about former Pakistan pacer Shoaib Akhtar, who had a long run-up and used to deliver at the same pace, but Bumrah has a much balanced run-up with a short-stride pattern. 'He (Bumrah) jogs in, you will be thinking 'this will be 70 miles an hour' and it hits you at 90 and you don't get a real flow. When I faced Shoaib Akhtar, he sprinted in at a hundred miles an hour and delivered at a hundred miles an hour," Broad said while speaking on the For The Love Of Cricket podcast. 'You were ready, but Bumrah is so balanced, in his run-up, it's a short-stride pattern, so he never gets over stride and off balance. I look at Glenn McGrath (who) had the most balanced delivery stride that I watched, and Bumrah is the same," Broad added. Interesting remark by Stuart Broad about Jasprit Bumrah's release stride being so similar to that of Glenn McGrath. Exactly the kind of cricketing insight that we miss in the current day and age of often redundant rhetoric. Top stuff @StuartBroad8 #ENGvIND — Priyank Panchal (@PKpanchal09) June 18, 2025 Bumrah has revealed that he had ruled out Test leadership during the Indian Premier League itself as part of his workload management and had informed BCCI of his desire to prioritise his bowling responsibilities over captaincy duties. Mhatre said he started playing cricket while watching Rohit bat and it was an unreal moment to now share the dressing room with him.
