Netflix fans 'hooked' on 'unique' new series viewed 16 million times in a week
The five-part series is being hailed a 'masterpiece' by enthralled viewers.
Netflix lovers have been enthralled by a new limited series that has already seen over 16 million views, and many have admitted binging the whole thing in one sitting. Featuring Julianne Moore, Meghann Fahy, Milly Alcock, and Kevin Bacon, Sirens debuted on the streaming service on May 22 and has swiftly climbed to the top spot in Netflix's global top 10 list of English TV shows.
The five-part drama centres around "scrappy everywoman" Devon (portrayed by The White Lotus actress Meghann), who grows increasingly worried about her sister Simone's (House of the Dragon's Milly) unsettlingly close relationship with her new employer, the mysterious socialite Michaela Kell (Julianne).
As Devon's suspicions about Michaela's opulent, cult-like lifestyle intensify, she stages an intervention to reconnect with her sister, oblivious to the challenges she'll encounter in a world far removed from her own, reports Surrey Live.
The plot unfolds over a single eventful weekend at the Kells' extravagant beach estate. According to the series' synopsis, Sirens offers a sharp, sensual, and darkly humorous examination of women, power, and class.
Viewers are hooked, with the series already boasting a 75 per cent rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a staggering 16,700,000 views.
One viewer sung the show's praises on Rotten Tomatoes, saying: "Binged this in one sitting. Very entertaining."
Another fan praised: "With superb acting, beautiful scenery of beachfront mansions, and a fast-paced storyline, this show was the perfect summer escape like a good beach read."
Someone else remarked: "It's so good I binged it all this morning and I can't get enough of it."
A fourth viewer praised the show, sharing: "Sirens is unique and special. I got hooked since minute one. A psychological and emotional series with a dark and classy sense of humor.
"The performances are stellar; each character is meticulously developed and it allows you to see their complexities even in the shallow atmosphere of the cult. Hands down; this show hits a different level."
Equally passionate views were found over on X, where one person stated: "Sirens is a masterpiece. You cannot convince me otherwise. It powerfully exposes how patriarchy and misogyny twist reality, turning women into villains while enabling men to evade accountability and rewrite the narrative in their favor. Insane!!"
Another individual openly expressed their admiration: "Ok soooo, Sirens was f**king good. I wish it wasn't a limited series. It was so nuanced and written with an impressive amount of REALITY. That Milly Alcock was acting at a veteran level, it was almost eerie, give her a Globe AND an Emmy."
Although Sirens joins shows like Adolescence as a limited series not set for a comeback, The Bold Type's Meghann has hinted that she sees potential for more.
Speaking to Variety, she commented: "It ends in a very natural way, but I can imagine what the characters' worlds become."
"I, for one, would love to know what happens to Michaela, where she goes. So I think it's definitely within the realm of possibility. We didn't talk about it on set, but I would love to do more."
Molly Smith Metzler, whose play Elemeno Pea inspired Sirens and who also created the Netflix series Maid, has sparked some hope among followers.
Speaking to Glamour magazine, she conveyed a deep connection with her characters: "These characters are real people to me. I wrote the play 15 years ago. I've been thinking about them this whole time. I could write them until the day I die."
Opening up about the potential continuation of the story, she added: "I'd never say never, but could I do them justice in another season? I'd have to think about it."
Sirens is available to watch on Netflix.

Beloved author Jodi Picoult launched a scorched earth tirade against Hollywood elites for 'bending the knee' and refusing to create movies that could upset President Trump. The bestselling author of My Sister's Keeper slapped down an 'unnamed streaming service' in a video shared to TikTok after plans to create a movie from her 2021 novel were suddenly abandoned. 'Today I found out after four years they have decided to cancel the project because "with the new regime they don't want to do a storyline around Covid,"' she said on Friday. While Picoult did not explicitly name the streaming service, it is widely known that Netflix acquired the rights to her Covid-era tome Wish You Were Here back. The book centers around a NYC woman in her late-20s woman whose life is upended by the arrival of the pandemic and the subsequent lockdowns. Picoult was responding to a question on TikTok about why more of her books haven't been turned into movies. 'This is what I mean when I say even places that are considered to be very liberal, like Hollywood, are terrified of the Trump administration,' she said. 'They think there is going to be backlash if they don't bend the knee.' Trump has used hardball negotiating tactics during his second term to force CEOs and industries into making dramatic concessions. He even slapped extraordinary tariffs on some of America's closest allies. But in a display of fondness for his favorite films, Trump has tried to remake Hollywood in his own image while railing against the cinema hub for its 'wokeness.' He threatened to impose a 100 percent tariff on foreign-made films in an effort to bring productions back to Hollywood, warning: 'The Movie Industry in America is DYING a very fast death.' Trump also appointed several Ambassadors to Hollywood - right-leaning celebrities who endorsed him during his campaign, including Mel Gibson and Sylvester Stallone. But Picoult argues Trump's involvement has softened the industry, which once proudly opposed to the former reality TV star, and made executives and bigwigs more risk-averse. To make matters worse for Picoult, members of the Trump administration have been openly critical of the handling of the Covid pandemic in the United States. 'It's hard to be creative when you're afraid,' Tom Nunan, from the UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television, told the Los Angeles Times. Doctor Who fans hail return of Billie Piper and Jodie Whittaker
In the finale, Ncuti Gatwa leaves Doctor Who and is seen regenerating into Piper, who first appeared in the series as the companion to the ninth Time Lord in 2005. Ncuti Gatwa (BBC Studios/Bad Wolf/PA) Retired teacher Steve Hatcher, 66, of Ashbourne in Derbyshire, who runs Whoovers – a Doctor Who fan club – told the PA news agency: 'The question in the mind was, is it going to be a regeneration to a new Doctor, which it was, or is it just going to be a regeneration to black and an uncertain future? 'So I'm very relieved that they've found a new Doctor and she's a brilliant actor and I'm sure that'll be terrific, so Doctor Who continues, I would say, on the basis of that, it was a terrific episode. 'I think it gave us everything that we wanted to see from it, there was nothing left unexplained at the end of it apart from those things that don't need explaining because there's an inherent mystery to it all, but it was terrific, I enjoyed it a lot.' Mr Hatcher, who watched the episode with other fans at the Derby Quad cinema, said the regeneration was 'handled really nicely' and the overwhelming mood was positive. He went on: 'What a lovely surprise to see Jodie Whittaker come back as well tonight.' James Ashway, 27, from Bristol, who helps run the Doctor Who Appreciation Society's magazine, said: 'It was an episode which threw the kitchen sink in terms of returning characters, Jodie Whittaker and obviously now Billie Piper as well, as the new Doctor. 'I'm a bit speechless, to be honest, there's quite a lot of stuff to take in, but I think it was an interesting episode which pivoted in the middle to tell two different stories, one wrapping up the end of that season and obviously telling Ncuti Gatwa's regeneration as well, so very enjoyable.' However, Brendan Noble, 57, of Middlesbrough, a former English teacher who runs the Sense Sphere YouTube channel, said: 'I think we've just had what I would have called EastEnders in space. I am absolutely shocked, irritated, frustrated, people are contacting me now in absolute shock and horror at what's just happened. 'It's lazy writing, hodgepodge of exposition, escapism, nonsense, (Russell T Davies) was throwing every toy from the Doctor Who box at the telly, hoping that some of it would make sense in the way of entertaining you.' Mr Noble told PA it was a 'shame' that Gatwa 'never had any decent stories', calling it an 'absolute waste of a Doctor'.

Ncuti Gatwa: The Sex Education star who brought a flirty-spin to the Doctor
His path to success has been a long and winding one, with struggles with depression and homelessness, before landing the role of a lifetime and a dream for thousands of young actors. The 32-year-old took on the role of the Time Lord previously filled by Matt Smith, David Tennant – who was brought back to be the 14th Doctor where he ushered in a bi-generation storyline that led to Gatwa becoming the 15th Doctor – and actress Jodie Whittaker. In 2016, he played Demetrius in a production of A Midsummer's Nights Dream at Shakespeare's Globe, before his big break came when he was cast in Sex Education as Eric Effiong, a young gay British-Nigerian who is best friends with Otis, the show's lead character. The Netflix show, which ran from 2019 until 2023, documented Eric's growth as he deals with his family's acceptance of his sexuality while he embraces his Nigerian heritage. Ncuti Gatwa. However, Gatwa's seemingly meteoric rise, which led to him being cast in the 2023 blockbuster Barbie, has been far from plain sailing. Writing in The Big Issue in May 2020, he said he ended up homeless after running out of savings in the months before he landed his role in Sex Education. 'Being a 25-year-old man with no money or job affected my sense of self-worth,' he wrote. 'Rejection became unbearable. Auditions weren't just acting jobs, they were lifelines.' He continued: 'One friend gave me money towards paying off the prior month's rent and offered to let me move into their spare room rent free for a while. 'Great, I thought. An opportunity to get back on my feet and start paying people back. 'On moving-in day, he changed his mind. As I was standing on the street with my suitcases, one thought came into my head: 'I'm homeless'.' While everything appeared fine to the outside world, Gatwa was losing weight because he could not afford to eat properly. 'To the outside world everything seemed fine. I was temping at Harrods,' he wrote. 'I'd wake up from the double bed I shared with my best friend, leave the house without a hair out of place in a slick-looking trench coat and polished brogues. In reality, Gatwa had developed depression, though he kept it from his friends out of fear of being a 'burden', and later worked through the mental health condition. He joined Doctor Who in 2023 when Russell T Davies, who was behind the programme's 2005 revival, took over from showrunner Chris Chibnall – who steered Whittaker's run and worked with her and Tennant previously on Broadchurch. Gatwa's turn in the science fiction show was praised by reviewers for his first season's starting episodes Space Babies and The Devil's Chord. The Guardian said that he 'will make this show far more fun than it's been for years', praising him for being 'naturally able to express the dazzling extremes' of the character, while The Times said he 'sparkles as a charismatic Doctor with otherworldly energy'. However, Davies, who had success with Channel 4's It's A Sin and Queer As Folk as well Doctor Who spin-offs The Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood, has recently faced accusations that he has pushed the show in a 'woke' direction. A small number of social media critics have pointed to the diversity of the cast, a drag queen villain, and introduction of transgender and non-binary characters. However, both he and Gatwa have strongly dismissed this criticism as from a minority, with Davies telling BBC Radio 2's 20 Secrets From 20 Years: 'Someone always brings up matters of diversity. 'And there are online warriors accusing us of diversity and wokeness and involving messages and issues. 'And I have no time for this. I don't have a second to bear (it). Because what you might call diversity, I just call an open door.' Gatwa told Attitude magazine in 2024 that the hateful comments the sci-fi show has received after casting a black man is 'fascinating, because there's so much energy they're putting into it … I think they need to go find a hobby is one thing'. During his time, he has had companions in the form of Andor actress Varada Sethu, and former Coronation Street actress Millie Gibson, who played Gatwa's companion Ruby Sunday since the 2023 Christmas episode The Church On Ruby Road.
