Cholera Outbreak Surges Past 35,000 Cases in DRC
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has recorded more than 35,000 cases of cholera since the beginning of 2025, as the country faces one of its most severe outbreaks in recent years.
Health Minister Roger Kamba
said
the DRC is currently in the acute phase of the epidemic, with the capital Kinshasa, home to over 17 million people, among the hardest-hit regions. The rapid spread of the disease has been attributed to a combination of recurring floods, lack of access to clean drinking water, poor sanitation infrastructure, and large-scale population displacement.
In response to the escalating crisis, the Ministry of Health is intensifying epidemiological surveillance at border crossings through the National Border Hygiene Program. These efforts aim to contain the outbreak and minimize the risk of cross-border transmission.
Cholera, a waterborne disease linked to contaminated water and inadequate sanitation, remains a persistent threat in regions experiencing climate-related disasters and infrastructure challenges.
The World Health Organization has previously identified the DRC as one of the high-risk countries for recurrent cholera outbreaks due to its vulnerable public health systems

South Africa to Open Four New Provincial Academic Hospitals
Nada Mustafa South Africa is set to establish four new academic hospitals in noncentral provinces. The official announcement was made by Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi in Parliament, according to TV BRICS. The initiative aims to address equal access to medical training infrastructure across the country. Construction has already begun on a new academic hospital in Limpopo, which is currently 26 per cent complete. According to Motsoaledi, South Africa has ten central hospitals where medical students are currently trained, four of which are located in Gauteng province. In contrast, provinces such as Mpumalanga, North West, Limpopo, and the Northern Cape lack these facilities. The Minister also announced the complete reconstruction of several existing academic hospitals, including a major facility in KwaZulu-Natal and two others located in Tshwane and Mthatha. UAE Ranks First Globally on Health Inclusivity Index in Health Awareness and Preventive Care
Yara Sameh The United Arab Emirates has secured the top global position on the newly released Health Inclusivity Index, reflecting its international leadership in health awareness, community engagement, and quality of life enhancement. This is reported by Emirates News Agency , a partner of TV BRICS . The results were announced during a high-level policy dialogue held in Abu Dhabi, highlighting the UAE's commitment to inclusive and preventive healthcare. The Index, developed in partnership with international policy research organisations, evaluates the performance of 40 countries across 58 sub-indicators in areas such as health literacy, public awareness, inclusion, and equity. The UAE achieved the highest overall score, underlining its global leadership in delivering people-centred and preventive health systems. The UAE was ranked second globally in implementing a universal health system and placed among the top five countries for person-focused healthcare. Notably, it also secured the tenth position in health literacy, which has improved by 30 per cent over the past three years due to national awareness campaigns, improved access, and cross-sector partnerships. Gaza Humanitarian Foundation says 20 killed at aid point - War on Gaza
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation said 20 people killed at an aid point in Khan Yunis, in the south of the Palestinian territory on Wednesday. "Our current understanding is that 19 of the victims were trampled and one was stabbed amid a chaotic and dangerous surge," the US- and Israel-backed organisation said in a statement. A medical source at Nasser Hospital in Khan Yunis gave a lower toll, telling AFP it had received "nine martyrs, including several children" after "Israeli forces" opened fire. The deaths came as Gaza's civil defence agency said eight people were killed in Israeli strikes across the Palestinian territory on Wednesday, including six in Gaza City. The GHF claimed the stampede was "driven by agitators in the crowd", adding: "We have credible reason to believe that elements within the crowd -- armed and affiliated with Hamas -- deliberately fomented the unrest". The medical source at Nasser Hospital said the victims were "heading to the aid distribution centre in northwest Rafah to receive food aid" but the main gate to the centre had been closed. "The Israeli occupation forces and the centre's private security personnel opened fire on them, resulting in a large number of deaths and injuries," the source added. The GHF, an officially private effort, began operations on May 26 after Israel had halted supplies into the Gaza Strip for more than two months, sparking warnings of imminent famine. On Tuesday, the UN said it had recorded 875 people killed in Gaza while trying to get food, including 674 "in the vicinity of GHF sites", since late May. Last week, UN rights office spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani told reporters that "most of the injuries are gunshot injuries". The GHF has denied that fatal shootings have occurred in the immediate vicinity of its aid points and the Israeli army has accused Hamas of being responsible for firing at civilians. "For the first time since operations began, GHF personnel identified multiple firearms in the crowd, one of which was confiscated," the GHF said on Wednesday. "An American worker was also threatened with a firearm by a member of the crowd during the incident," it added, calling it part of a "deeply troubling pattern", including "false messages" about aid site openings.
