Durban North babies and carers need temporary shelter
THIS winter the sounds of construction will replace the usual lullabies at The Domino Foundation's Babies' Home in Durban North.
The facility at 127 Adelaide Tambo Avenue is set to undergo extensive renovations starting in May, including a full roof replacement, prompting a temporary relocation for its young residents and caregivers.

House mother Precious Thabethe, who oversees the home, said the renovations mean the house won't be safe for the children or staff for the next three months.
'We're incredibly grateful to the community – thanks to their generosity the R1.3m needed for the project has been raised. Now we just need to find a temporary home for our family,' she said.
The home houses eight babies and toddlers, along with two staff members on duty at all times. The team is urgently seeking a temporary, child-friendly residence in or near Durban North to minimise disruption to the children's schooling and routine.
'We're looking for a large, unfurnished home, ideally with four bedrooms, or three bedrooms and a separate cottage. It's important that we remain close to our current location. The children attend a local pre-primary, and Precious' own children go to school nearby. Being within reach of our network of volunteers and supporters is essential,' said Natalie Ogden, justice co-ordinator at The Domino Foundation.

Siyanqoba residents cry out for gravel road repairs
Residents in Siyanqoba are fed up with the municipality's inaction towards fixing the gravel roads, hindering them from accessing a number of services as vehicles struggle to pass through. The ward 12 residents from Yellow Bone complain that it all started during heavy rains experienced early this year, which flooded their gravel roads not far from their yards, causing serious damage to the roads, as there have been big holes that require urgent intervention. As if that wasn't enough, the community went on to complain about the irregular supply of water in their area, as they claim that the person responsible for the pump doesn't operate it as he is expected to, leaving residents without water for weeks. Ward Councillor Lucky Tolo, explained that the biggest issue that they are facing is that they are not fully capacitated when it comes to the equipment needed to fix the road. 'We got a team who attended to the road two weeks ago, but they couldn't finish up as they were then called to an emergency in another area,' he said, adding that he will check with the team to find out when they will be going back to finish up the work. Maxie, a hit-and-run survivor, needs a loving home
Merinda Brits from 4Paws, a non-profit organisation dedicated to saving animals, received a call from a man who lives in Diepsloot, a few weeks ago. The man assumed that his dog, Maxie, had been hit by a car. With a severely broken leg and unimaginable pain, this brave dog somehow managed to drag herself home. 'We rushed to the scene, loaded the injured dog into our vehicle and took her to our vet,' said Brits. 'Unfortunately, our vet informed us that her bones were shattered in more places than they could count and that her leg couldn't be saved.' Also read: Become a puppy raiser for guide dogs Brits said the surgery went well even even though the recovery period was very long for the poor furry friend. 'She would sit by the door, whimpering softly, confused by the absence of her limb.' But day by day, step by shaky step, Maxie learned to walk again. Brits said her owner asked her if they could take his dog into their shelter, out of fear that this unfortunate incident might happen again. This was music to Brits' ears who gladly took the dog in and is now looking for a home for it.
