GE2025: PM Wong receives congratulatory calls from foreign leaders on election victory

Yahoo06-05-2025

SINGAPORE - Leaders from Australia, Bhutan, Indonesia and Malaysia have called Prime Minister Lawrence Wong to congratulate him on his party's victory at the 2025 General Election.
In his first election as prime minister on May 3, PM Wong and the PAP won 65.57 per cent of the vote.
It was mutual congratulations for PM Wong and Australia's Mr Anthony Albanese, who claimed a historic second term as prime minister on May 3 at the Australian federal election.
In a letter sent to Prime Minister Albanese on May 5, PM Wong noted how Singapore and Australia share a strong partnership and a high level of strategic trust.
'We are like-minded partners with a common interest in upholding an open, inclusive and rules-based global order,' he wrote, in the letter shared by Singapore's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).
'We work well together to promote substantive and pathfinding regional and international initiatives, including in Asean and at the WTO (World Trade Organisation).'
MFA on May 5 said that the two prime ministers 'reaffirmed the excellent state of bilateral relations' ahead of the Singapore-Australia Annual Leaders' Meeting later in 2025.
There, the countries will launch the next phase of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in conjunction with the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
In his letter, PM Wong also noted that bilateral cooperation has grown in areas such as defence and security, trade and investment, the arts and culture, education, science and innovation, as well as in the digital and green economies.
In a Facebook post on May 5, PM Wong also said he had received calls from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay.
'They congratulated me on the outcome of the elections, and we had good discussions on regional developments and bilateral cooperation,' wrote PM Wong. 'I look forward to catching up with them in person before too long.'
In a Facebook post on May 5, Datuk Seri Anwar said he called to congratulate PM Wong on the PAP's 'resounding victory'.
'The PAP's strong mandate – securing 87 out of 97 seats – reflects the deep trust and confidence the Singaporean people have placed in PM Wong's leadership,' he said, as he reaffirmed the longstanding partnership between Singapore and Malaysia, underpinned by strong people-to-people ties and close economic cooperation.
He added: 'I am confident that under his leadership, our bilateral relations will continue to grow from strength to strength, especially as Malaysia takes on the Asean chairmanship this year.'
Indonesian President Prabowo, who shared footage of his call with PM Wong on his YouTube page on May 5, said: 'You came to me and congratulated me yourself, so I would like to go to Singapore and congratulate you myself.'
PM Wong was the first foreign leader to visit Jakarta after Mr Prabowo took office in October 2024.
In the video, Mr Prabowo also said he would drop by Singapore soon and call on PM Wong.
Bhutan's Mr Tobgay wrote on Facebook that he was 'delighted to speak with (his) schoolmate and good friend'. He had crossed paths with PM Wong at Harvard Kennedy School.
'I congratulated him on his landslide electoral victory which is a clear reflection of the people's trust in his leadership,' he wrote.
'With him at the helm, Singapore is secure in excellent hands,' he said, adding that he had invited PM Wong to Bhutan, and that he looked forward to deepening the friendship between the countries.
Leaders around the world, from the US and Europe to Japan, Taiwan and New Zealand, have extended their congratulations to PM Wong since May 4.

Energy company issues apology for misleading more than 400,000 customers with marketing tactic: 'Historic acknowledgement'

A major Australian energy company has taken a rare step: telling the truth. EnergyAustralia, one of the country's biggest power providers, has issued a public apology and agreed to a legal settlement after more than 400,000 customers were misled by its Go Neutral carbon offset program, The Guardian reported. The program, launched in 2016, claimed to cancel out the climate impact of electricity and gas usage through the purchase of international carbon offsets, but a 2023 lawsuit filed by the advocacy group Parents for Climate challenged those claims as greenwashing. Before the case went to trial, EnergyAustralia acknowledged that offsets are "not the most effective way to assist customers to reduce their emissions" and admitted its marketing may have led people to believe their energy use was climate-neutral. "Offsets do not prevent or undo the harms caused by burning fossil fuels," the company said. This admission, the first of its kind by a major Australian energy company, marks a turning point in corporate accountability and climate action. Parents for Climate called it a "historic acknowledgment" and a "huge step forward" for the company's 1.6 million customers, many of whom believed they were making a responsible choice for the planet. The core issue is that carbon offsets were sold as a way to ignore consumption and pollution, under the belief that the company would reduce emissions for its customers. While carbon offsets can play a role in reaching net zero pollution, they must complement local climate policies that cut emissions directly, not substitute them. What does this mean for you? Companies should be wary about misrepresenting their environmental efforts since corporations are being held accountable for their significant role in contributing to the warming climate and making life harder and more expensive for individuals. Business should take note and step up efforts to cut pollution and protect the planet's future. With fossil fuel investments increasingly underperforming compared to clean energy alternatives, the logic for a low-carbon future is now rooted in both economics and ethics. "Greenwashing isn't harmless," said Nic Seton, Parents for Climate CEO. "It's costing families money, delaying climate action, and eroding trust." Do you think misinformation is a major problem in America today? Definitely Only for some people Only with certain issues Not really Click your choice to see results and speak your mind. Seton called the statement "a powerful message that the era of unchecked greenwashing is over." Though the Go Neutral program ended in 2024, the case could set a precedent for global brands. As clean energy businesses drive innovation and job growth, actions including this one show that honesty is good for both the planet and business. Samsung Fire invests $570 million in Canopius

June 12 (UPI) -- South Korea's Samsung Fire & Marine Insurance has invested $570 million in Canopius Group to increase its stake in the international specialty insurer from 19% to 40%. Canopius announced Wednesday that Samsung Fire had purchased the 21% stake from Fidentia Fortuna Holdings, which is owned by U.S. private equity company Centerbridge Partners. It marked Samsung Fire's third investment in Canopius. South Korea's leading non-life insurance firm channeled funds in 2019 and 2020 to secure a 21% stake in London-based Canopius. The transaction, which is expected to take place on Sept. 30 this year, is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. "This additional investment goes beyond a financial stake -- it represents a strategic milestone toward increased collaboration and shared value creation," Samsung Fire CEO Lee Mun-hwa said in a statement. "We remain committed to expanding our overseas footprint and driving innovation to evolve into a top-tier global insurer," he added. Established in 2003, Canopius has grown into a top-tier global underwriter, which has operations in more than 130 countries, including Bermuda, the Netherlands, Singapore, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The company ranks as the fifth-largest syndicate in the Lloyd's London market. Samsung Fire has actively explored investment opportunities in overseas markets. It spent $19 million in 2017 to become the second-largest shareholder of Vietnamese insurer PJICO with a 20% interest. In 2018, the Seoul-based company channeled $20 million to buy a roughly 5% shareholding in Indonesian non-life insurance company TPI. Copyright 2025 UPI News Corporation. All Rights Reserved.

Smartly Enhances Brand Pulse: The First Real-Time, Cross-Channel Solution for Brand Measurement and Optimization

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Smartly, the leading AI-powered advertising platform, today announced significant enhancements to Brand Pulse, the only real-time, cross-channel brand measurement and optimization solution in the market designed to solve one of digital advertising's toughest challenges: understanding what's working, where, and why, while the campaign is still live. Measuring and optimizing upper-funnel brand campaigns has traditionally been fragmented and slow. Brands are too often left relying on outdated insights, incomplete reach and frequency data, and metrics that don't reflect true audience engagement across channels. Brand Pulse changes that by delivering real-time performance data across major platforms, including YouTube. Marketers can now confidently optimize their brand investments and clearly see the incremental reach each platform - including YouTube - delivers. Brand Pulse empowers marketers with: Real-Time Deduplicated Reach Insights Evaluate true, deduplicated audience size and cost per unique user across channels. Adjust media mix dynamically to maximize visibility. Cross-Channel Frequency Controls Monitor exposure in real-time across platforms. Avoid ad waste and oversaturation that leads to declining returns. Attentive Audience Optimization Go beyond impressions served. With customizable attention metrics, like time viewed or active engagement, marketers can now define what attention means to their brand and automatically optimize toward high-value, engaged audiences across channels. "With Brand Pulse, we could make in-flight adjustments based on real-time data," said Sander van Strien, Social Advertising Lead at Samsung. "We reallocated budgets, refined our media mix, and, importantly, we were able to eliminate frequency wastage entirely. This year, we hit our target perfectly, something we hadn't been able to achieve before." Smartly's Brand Pulse is already driving impact for global brands across America, EMEA, and APAC. By enabling media and brand teams to see and shape campaign outcomes in real time, Brand Pulse turns upper-funnel investment into a strategic growth engine. 'Brand investment is essential, but without real-time insight, marketers are forced to operate in the dark reacting after the moment has passed,' said Laura Desmond, CEO of Smartly. 'Brand Pulse brings precision to the upper funnel, delivering immediate, cross-channel visibility into reach, frequency, and attention so brands can optimize while the campaign is still in motion, not in hindsight.' With the addition of YouTube, advertisers can now access a truly unified view of brand performance across Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, TikTok, and Pinterest, empowering teams to make smarter, faster decisions with a holistic, cross-platform perspective.
