Odisha launches IEC materials for elimination of Measles and Rubella

Bhubaneswar, Apr 29 (UNI) Odisha Health and Family Welfare Minister, Dr. Mukesh Mahaling, on Tuesday launched a comprehensive set of Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials aimed at accelerating the Measles and Rubella (MR) elimination programme in the state.
The launch was part of the celebrations for World Immunization Week 2025, observed globally from April 24–30 under the theme: 'Immunization for all is humanly possible', with the goal of strengthening public health and safeguarding future generations.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Mahaling reaffirmed Odisha's unwavering commitment to eliminating Measles and Rubella by 2026 — in alignment with India's national target.
Highlighting Odisha's outstanding performance in child healthcare, Dr. Mahaling proudly shared that the state has achieved a remarkable 90.5 percent full immunization coverage — the highest among all Indian states — according to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5).
This milestone, he said, is a testament to the dedication of healthcare workers, community support, and strong inter-departmental coordination.
He emphasized that the success of the MR elimination mission depends on a collaborative approach involving multiple government departments.
Dr. Mahaling appealed for the active participation of parents, caregivers, Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, PRI members, community leaders, NGOs, SHGs, and civil society to help create a grassroots movement for immunization awareness and action.
He urged all stakeholders to work together to make Odisha a Measles-Rubella-free state — a shining model of public health excellence for the entire nation.
The event also paid tribute to India's immunization milestones, including the eradication of smallpox in 1977, the country's polio-free status since 2014, and the elimination of maternal and neonatal tetanus in 2015.

Bihar tops the nation in digital healthcare, with over 90 per cent health facilities almost paperless

Patna, June 8 (UNI) With 92 per cent of health facilities almost going paperless, Bihar has emerged as the national frontrunner in digital transformation in healthcare, achieving the number one rank in the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) implementation. The state is setting new benchmarks in accessible and efficient public health delivery, with a remarkable 92 per cent online OPD registration rate at government health facilities and the highest number of QR code scans for patient check-ins CEO of Bihar Swasthya Suraksha Samiti, Shashank Shekhar Sinha, highlighted the state's achievements and said that the state not only leads in QR code scans for OPD registration but also tops the country in the number of Electronic Health Records (e-prescriptions) generated. He further noted that Bihar has received the highest incentives under the Central Government's Digital Health Incentive Scheme (DHIS), which are being reinvested to strengthen the state's digital health infrastructure. State Health Committee Administrative Officer Rajesh Kumar said that the state's BHAVYA (Bihar Health Applications Visionary Yojana for All) model, aligned with ABDM, has redefined healthcare accessibility and monitoring across the state. According to Kumar, paperless health facilities under digital healthcare were possible following the 'Scan and Share' initiative under ABDM, which allows patients to scan a QR code at the entry of a health facility and directly proceed to a consultation without the hassle of long queues or paperwork. This simple yet revolutionary step, along with widespread adoption of ABHA IDs (Ayushman Bharat Health Account), has dramatically reduced patient turnaround time in government hospitals, from over an hour earlier to an average of just 45 minutes now, covering consultation to medicine disbursal. Kumar further said that Bihar's state-of-the-art Command and Control Centre, a technological nerve centre in the state capital, monitors real-time feeds from all district hospitals and health facilities across the state. It ensures prompt alerts, compliance monitoring, and smooth operations at all levels. This setup is further backed by District Command Centres and Data Analytics Units, allowing proactive identification and management of potential health emergencies by tracking disease trends and patient data in real time. Meanwhile, a nine-member delegation recently visited Bihar on a three-day tour of the state to understand the scale and impact of this digital leap. During interaction with patients at the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Silao in Nalanda district, the patients lauded the convenience and efficiency of the new digital process, describing it as a complete overhaul of the previous cumbersome system. From homebirths to healthier futures: How one Assam district transformed maternal care

ASSAM: Five years ago, South Salmara-Mankachar, a Muslim-majority district on Assam's Bangladesh border, faced a significant challenge: only 47% of women were delivering in medical facilities. For many, childbirth remained a risky affair at home, far from healthcare assistance. Today, that figure has surged to 89% and home deliveries have dropped sharply from 5,638 in 2021-22 to just 820 in 2024-25. This dramatic turnaround is a testament to the power of collaboration and community engagement. A unified approach The shift in delivery practices reflects a broader improvement in maternal and newborn health. District officials attribute the change to a united effort across various departments, once working in isolation. The Health Department, in partnership with Education, Social Welfare, and Women & Child Development, combined resources and strategies to improve healthcare access. This collaboration brought health workers, teachers and Anganwadi workers together to engage local communities through village meetings, urging families to choose institutional deliveries. Strengthening healthcare infra One of the key interventions was the improvement of local healthcare infrastructure. Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, which offer essential services, were revived with stable electricity connections, ensuring they operated round-the-clock. Labour rooms were re-equipped and ten new in-house laboratory rooms were set up across the district, bringing diagnostics closer to the people. This reduced one of the main barriers to maternal care in rural areas. Furthermore, early antenatal care (ANC) saw significant growth. ANC registrations increased from 59% in 2022-23 to 85.3% in 2023-24. Postnatal care compliance also improved from 63% to 79%, surpassing the state's average. These advancements in healthcare access have led to better maternal outcomes, including timely risk detection and improved preparedness for delivery.
