CM Majhi, Samal's two-day Delhi visit rekindles Odisha cabinet reshuffle buzz
Meanwhile, 11 MPs and two state ministers (Panchayati Raj minister Rabi Narayan Naik and Health minister Mukesh Mahaling) on Tuesday gathered at the house of Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Incidentally, deputy chief minister KV Singh Deo is also in Delhi. With speculations rife that a few ministers will be dropped for their poor performance, the chief minister's visit to Delhi and meeting with the party MPs has assumed significance. Party's general secretary (organisation) Manas Mohanty, currently on a tour to Kantabanji, is likely to attend the meeting. Sources said, the appointment of party leaders to state corporations and boards has long been finalised but held up due to objections from various groups. The state government is unable to go ahead with the appointment of government pleaders in district courts for similar reasons. On a two-day visit to Delhi, Majhi has no official programme to attend. He is scheduled to catch an early flight to Bhubaneswar on Thursday as he is set to inaugurate the National Handloom Day programme at Janata Maidan.

Body of Puri girl brought to Odisha from Delhi
The body of the 15-year-old girl from Odisha's Puri, who succumbed to her burn injuries at AIIMS-Delhi, was brought to the state on Sunday (August 4, 2025) night, police said. The minor's body reached the Biju Patnaik International Airport here before being taken to her native place at Balanga in Puri district, amid tight security arrangements, a senior officer said. Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida and Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling, who were present at the airport here, consoled the girl's father and paid floral tribute to her. The body of the girl was taken from the national capital by a service flight after the post-mortem examination at the AIIMS-Delhi was conducted earlier in the day, the officer said. The girl, who was allegedly set on fire by three miscreants at Balanga on July 19, was airlifted to AIIMS-Delhi the next day and breathed her last there on Saturday (August 2, 2025) evening after a 14-day battle for life. Hours after the teenager's death, the Odisha Police claimed that there was no other person involved in the incident and requested that no sensational statements be made over the matter. The girl's father also released a video, claiming that she ended her life due to mental distress. Initially, her mother, in the FIR, had alleged that three people had set the minor on fire near the Bhargavi riverbank. Keeping in view the sensitivity of the incident and a statewide outrage over the girl's death, the police have made elaborate security arrangements at the airport with around 180 personnel deployed, another officer said. Police personnel were also deployed at major crossings through which the hearse carrying the girl's mortal remains will pass, he said. Bhubaneswar DCP Jagmohan Meena said one platoon of force (30 personnel) will provide security to the hearse, while it is being taken from the airport to her native village. The city police would escort the hearse carrying the minor girl's body till Uttara Chhak, from where the Puri district police will provide security till her native place. Former Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee president Prasad Harichandan, BJD leader Sanjay Das Burma, BJP leader Samir Ranjan Dash and many others paid tribute to the deceased at the airport. A number of people also offered prayer (Namaz) at the airport as soon as the girl's body reached Odisha.

Odisha to house India's first integrated FinTech capability hub in Bhubaneswar
BHUBANESWAR: In a significant move poised to reshape Odisha's digital economy, the state government on Thursday announced the launch of the Integrated Global Financial Technology Capability Hub (I-GFTCH) in the city. Being set up in collaboration with Singapore-based Global Finance and Technology Network (GFTN) and the Asian Institute of Digital Finance (AIDF) at the National University of Singapore (NUS), this first-of-its-kind FinTech capability centre will make over 7,000 graduates job-ready with professional training in FinTech and InsurTech domains over the next five years. Minister for Electronics and IT Mukesh Mahaling said that with I-GFTCH, Odisha not only enters the FinTech race but also aims to set the pace. 'Apart from the direct value creation of ₹299 crore, an indirect economic impact is estimated at ₹898 crore over five years through the initiative by strengthening employment, service exports, and sector-wide innovation,' he said. 'Odisha's financial services sector, now contributing around eight per cent to the state's Gross State Value Added (GSVA), has been earmarked for rapid expansion under Vision Odisha 2036 and 2047. The state aims to boost the GSVA share to nearly 49 per cent by 2047 by focusing on advanced banking, insurance, payments, and emerging FinTech solutions,' he added. As part of the initiative, I-GFTCH offers a future-proof FinTech and InsurTech professional certification programme to job aspirants, who will be selected through an online test. This five-month hybrid course includes online modules, two weeks of on-campus sessions in Bhubaneswar, hands-on projects, and internship placements. It has been designed for final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students seeking to build a career in the financial sector. They will receive certificates from NUS-AIDF upon completion of the course. Minister for Higher Education Suryabanshi Suraj said this initiative places Odisha on the global map of digital skilling, aligning seamlessly with India's broader technological aspirations. 'We are committed to building a talent pipeline that can power India's innovation economy, and certification is a powerful step forward,' he said. The programme, commencing in September, adopts a hybrid learning format, with 60 per cent virtual lessons and 40 per cent in-person sessions. Selected students will be trained in AI, insurance, blockchain, governance, and finance. The programme is also expected to directly contribute to job creation, with 2,000 projected jobs linked to the capacity-building and talent development programme over five years.
