Body of Puri girl brought to Odisha from Delhi
The minor's body reached the Biju Patnaik International Airport here before being taken to her native place at Balanga in Puri district, amid tight security arrangements, a senior officer said.
Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida and Health Minister Mukesh Mahaling, who were present at the airport here, consoled the girl's father and paid floral tribute to her.
The body of the girl was taken from the national capital by a service flight after the post-mortem examination at the AIIMS-Delhi was conducted earlier in the day, the officer said.
The girl, who was allegedly set on fire by three miscreants at Balanga on July 19, was airlifted to AIIMS-Delhi the next day and breathed her last there on Saturday (August 2, 2025) evening after a 14-day battle for life.
Hours after the teenager's death, the Odisha Police claimed that there was no other person involved in the incident and requested that no sensational statements be made over the matter.
The girl's father also released a video, claiming that she ended her life due to mental distress. Initially, her mother, in the FIR, had alleged that three people had set the minor on fire near the Bhargavi riverbank.
Keeping in view the sensitivity of the incident and a statewide outrage over the girl's death, the police have made elaborate security arrangements at the airport with around 180 personnel deployed, another officer said.
Police personnel were also deployed at major crossings through which the hearse carrying the girl's mortal remains will pass, he said.
Bhubaneswar DCP Jagmohan Meena said one platoon of force (30 personnel) will provide security to the hearse, while it is being taken from the airport to her native village.
The city police would escort the hearse carrying the minor girl's body till Uttara Chhak, from where the Puri district police will provide security till her native place.
Former Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee president Prasad Harichandan, BJD leader Sanjay Das Burma, BJP leader Samir Ranjan Dash and many others paid tribute to the deceased at the airport.
A number of people also offered prayer (Namaz) at the airport as soon as the girl's body reached Odisha.

Lahore: Over 350 people allegedly vandalised two worship places of the Ahmadi minority community in Pakistan's Punjab province, setting one of them on fire, police said on Friday. The Ahmadis present there allegedly ran for their lives while police reached there after both worship places were razed. Police officer Rashid Qamar said 350 suspects have been booked for attacking, damaging and setting on fire two Ahmadi worship places under sections 295, 436, 440, 380, 144 and 149 of the Pakistan Penal Code and the Anti-Terrorism Act. According to the FIR, TLP leader Hafiz Rafaqat, Rana Zulfiqar, Hafiz Ashiq, Muhammad Umair Ahmad Raza, Qari Zahoor and some others incited the people of the village to attack the two worship places of Ahmadis. "They also incited the participants of the Independence Day rally to take part in the attack. They stoked hatred against Ahmadis through inflammatory speeches and resorted to violence," the FIR says. Both places of worship had been built prior to 1984. The violent crowd continued its rampage for nearly two hours in which one worship place was set on fire after demolition of its minarets. "The attackers also targeted nearby Ahmadi homes, pelting stones at houses, shattering windows, and spreading fear and panic among residents," the FIR says. Spokesperson for Jamaat-e-Ahmadiyya Pakistan Amir Mahmood, strongly condemning the attack, said that while Ahmadis were celebrating Pakistan's Independence Day, extremists launched violent assaults against them. 'This is not the freedom envisioned by the founders of Pakistan,' he said and demanded exemplary punishment to those involved in the mob violence. "Until those who commit such acts face justice, intolerance will grow. Authorities must act swiftly to protect all citizens," he said. Although Ahmadis consider themselves Muslims, Pakistan's Parliament in 1974 declared the community as non-Muslims. A decade later, they were not just banned from calling themselves Muslims but also barred from practising aspects of Islam. These include constructing or displaying any symbol that identifies them as Muslims such as building minarets or domes on mosques or publicly writing verses from the Quran. Amnesty International has called upon the Pakistani authorities to immediately end the harassment, intimidation and attacks on the Ahmadi community and uphold their right to freedom of belief and religion.

Dalit man attacked for sporting moustache, beard
Rajkot: A 27-year-old Dalit man was allegedly beaten up and subjected to casteist slurs by five people from the upper caste community in a village of Junagadh district, reportedly for sporting a moustache and a beard. The incident took place on Aug 11 in Vajli village of Visavadar taluka and came to light after the victim, Sagar Makwana, lodged a complaint with the Visavadar police station on Tuesday. Makwana's father-in-law was seriously injured in the attack. In the complaint lodged from his bed in the Junagadh Civil Hospital, Makwana named Shailesh Jebaliya, Lalo Bhupat Kathi Darbar, and three unidentified men. According to case details, Makwana, who resides in Manganath Pipli village, was towing his motorcycle after the vehicle broke down. As he was dragging the bike, Jebaliya and Bhupat confronted him, expressing their anger at him sporting a moustache and beard. They started hurling casteist abuses at him and warned him not to sport a look like people from the upper caste community, the FIR states. As the confrontation escalated and the three started beating him, Makwana managed to escape and reach his father-in-law Jivan Karsan's house, which was close by. Karsan advised that they talk to Jebaliya as he lived in the same village and resolve the issue. When they approached Jebaliya, Bhupat reached there in a car with three others. The five subjected the two men to casteist abuse and then assaulted them. As locals gathered at the spot, the assailants fled the scene. Villagers rushed the injured duo to the hospital, where Karsan's condition is said to be serious. Assistant superintendent of police (Visavadar) Rohit Kumar said, "The accused live in the same village as that of the complainant's father-in-law. A team has been formed to apprehend them, and they will be arrested soon. Makwana is a farm labourer." Police have registered a case under BNS sections of assault, unlawful assembly, rioting, and others, along with relevant provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Data analytics, response system help curb road fatalities in Sundargarh, Keonjhar
ROURKELA: Amid the high road fatalities in Sundargarh and Keonjhar, two key mining districts, Odisha Police has made good use of data analytics and paired it with response mechanism to bring down the numbers. A project piloted in the most accident-prone areas has helped curb fatalities as well as injuries. As part of the initiative, Koida, K Balang, Lahunipada, Chandiposh, Brahmani Tarang and RN Pali police stations under Rourkela police district and Birmitrapur, Rajgangpur, Bargaon, Sadar and Hemgir police stations under Sundargarh police district have been included in the pilot initiative which was conducted in July. Six police stations under Keonjhar too are part of it. Police sources informed that accident data for the one month period showed encouraging changes after implementation of the pilot project. According to statistics, Rourkela which had reported 17 fatalities in July 2024 marked a drop to 12 this year. In Sundargarh, 18 deaths were reported in July 2024 which came down to nine in July 2025. In Keonjhar, the 21 fatalities in July last year fell to eight this time. To understand the accident patterns, the police made use of Integrated Road Accident Database (iRAD) web application and analysed accident days, exact windows, geographic location as well as associated factors to break down what led to the high number of fatalities.
