Dubai Culture launches ‘Harakat Sikka' to nurture next‑gen animators

Dubai, United Arab Emirates – Dubai Culture and Arts Authority (Dubai Culture) is now accepting applications for Harakat Sikka, a stop‑motion animation and visual storytelling training programme under the Sikka Platform. By giving emerging creatives room to experiment, learn and produce original work, the initiative fuels growth across Dubai's arts ecosystem and reinforces the emirate's status as a global hub of the creative economy. The course is delivered through immersive workshops in both Arabic and English. It welcomes UAE nationals and residents aged 18 or older—students, artists, filmmakers, designers and writers—who want to bring stories to life on screen. No prior experience is needed. House 436 in Al Shindagha Historical Neighbourhood will come alive with a month-long creative programme running from 18 August to 26 September 2025. Limited to just 10 participants, the programme offers an exclusive opportunity to meet three times a week under the guidance of director-artist Boubaker Boukhari, celebrated for his experimental, folklore‑infused stop‑motion techniques, in a setting designed to be both focused and highly interactive. Participants will explore every stage of the craft, moving from concept development and storyboarding through filming, editing, and finally strategies for distribution and festival submission. Practical workshops in character design, visual arts, and audio recording lead up to a public screening of their projects at the Sikka Art & Design Festival. Dubai Culture invites aspiring storytellers to apply by submitting short written responses explaining their motivation and interest in animation. Applications must be submitted via this link no later than 8 August. Candidates will be selected based on their demonstrated interest in animation and, where applicable, the submission of a CV or creative portfolio. Beyond technique, Harakat Sikka helps participants produce original shorts that reflect their ideas and identity. Trainees gain hands-on experience with filmmaking tools and learn how to prepare their work for local and international festivals. The initiative supports the Authority's mission to build sustainable talent development platforms, expand training pathways, and deepen community engagement with the arts—reinforcing Dubai's position as a global centre for culture, an incubator for creativity, and a thriving hub for talent.

Did Prince Harry and Prince Andrew fight over Meghan Markle?

Prince Harry has firmly denied explosive allegations in a new royal biography that claim he once got into a physical altercation with his uncle, Prince Andrew, over behind-the-scenes comments made about Meghan Markle. The claims appear in Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York, a new book by author Andrew Lownie. An excerpt published in the Daily Mail alleges that a heated argument took place in 2013 during a family gathering, escalating to the point where 'punches were thrown,' leaving Prince Andrew with a bloody nose. The book further claims that Andrew privately referred to Meghan as an 'opportunist' and suggested her relationship with Harry wouldn't last. A spokesperson for Prince Harry responded to People saying, 'I can confirm neither of those things are true. Prince Harry and Prince Andrew have never had a physical fight, nor did Prince Andrew ever make those comments about the Duchess of Sussex to Prince Harry.' The denial adds to growing tensions that have dominated headlines since Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties in 2020 and relocated to California. Now settled in Montecito with their two children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, the couple is known for their focus toward philanthropic work and media projects. Meanwhile, the book paints a broader picture of internal discord within the royal family, alleging long-simmering tensions between Andrew and his nephews, including Prince William. It suggests that William has worked quietly to remove Andrew from the Royal Lodge estate in Windsor and reportedly harbors strong feelings against both Andrew and his ex-wife Sarah Ferguson, according to a report in People. Though the royal household continues to maintain public silence, Prince Harry has repeatedly expressed his hope for reconciliation. In a May interview with the BBC, he said, 'I would love reconciliation with my family. There's no point in continuing to fight anymore.'

Lindsay Lohan comes full circle with 'Freakier Friday'

Lindsay Lohan says she drew upon her own experiences of motherhood for Freakier Friday, the highly-anticipated sequel to her hit 2003 movie Freaky Friday. Lohan, 39, welcomed her first child in 2023, a year before the Disney movie was filmed. "It felt full circle for me, and also the timing was pretty impeccable considering that I'm a new mom and I was able to bring being a mom into the character," Lohan said at the film's London premiere recently. "It's the first time I'm able to do that on screen." Freaky Friday, with a reported budget of $26 million (Dh95.5 million approximately), was a surprise hit, making over $160 million worldwide and obtaining a cult following. The 2025 follow-up sees Lohan and actress Jamie Lee Curtis reprising the roles of mother and daughter duo Tess and Anna Coleman. Twenty years on, Anna is a single parent to tomboy teen daughter Harper, played by Julia Butters. Their relationship comes under stress when Anna falls for Eric (Manny Jacinto), the father of Harper's new British classmate Lily (Sophia Hammons), and they decide to get married. The future stepsisters, with a mutual dislike for one another, decide to intervene. While the 2003 film saw a body swap between Tess and Anna, things get "freakier" this time around with Tess and Anna switching bodies with Lily and Harper. Before signing on to the sequel, Lohan ensured that Anna returned as a multi-faceted and relatable character. "It was important to me that we explained who Anna is today and how she's evolved and the dynamic between her and her daughter as she's a single working mom. There are some basic points that I wanted to get across because I want people to see the movie and find a piece of it that they can grab onto and be like, 'okay, I get that'," she said. Directed by Nisha Ganatra, the movie also sees actor Chad Michael Murray reprising the role of young Anna's love interest, Jake. Shooting the sequel was a "lovefest", said Murray. "It was the same, but better. It felt very much like connective tissue to the first movie. Everyone loved going to work and no one wanted to go home." Freakier Friday marks Lohan's big screen return. "It's obviously nerve-wracking because you want it to be great and you want people to love what you do," she said. "As long as people are enjoying what I'm doing and it's making them happy, then I feel like I'm doing my job and that's what I'm here to do."
