Sprint ace Ewan stuns cycling with retirement

Perth Now06-05-2025
Caleb Ewan, at his peak one of Australian cycling's greatest talents, has stunned the sport by announcing his immediate retirement.
Ewan delivered his bombshell decision on social media, saying events of the last two years - especially around his messy exit from top Australian team Jayco AlUla - have "taken a significant toll on my relationship with the sport".
The 30-year-old sprint ace started this year without a team and it looked as though his career could end prematurely.
But he joined high-profile British outfit INEOS Grenadiers and made a successful return in late March, winning his first comeback race.
He then claimed a WorldTour-level win last month and appeared to be back on track.
"The last few years haven't been easy, but in 2025 I found something again - not just legs, but belief - thanks to the INEOS Grenadiers," he wrote.
"They gave me space, trust and the environment to rediscover what I am capable of. I won again.
"But the truth is that even when I crossed the line first, that feeling - the one you chase for years - faded quicker than it used to.
"My experiences of the last seasons, in particular the second half of 2024, has taken a significant toll on my relationship with the sport. I'm glad I didn't let that period define the end of my career."
Ewan's woes can be traced back to 2021, when he was at the peak of his powers and one of road cycling's premier sprinters.
He publicly declared his bold ambition that season to win stages in each of cycling's Grand Tours and was on track, with two in the Giro d'Italia.
But Ewan crashed at the end of stage four in the Tour de France and suffered a broken collarbone that needed surgery.
While he returned to racing a few weeks later, he was never the same rider.
He left Belgian team Lotto Dstny in strained circumstances at the end of 2023 and returned to Jayco AlUla, where he had started his professional career.
But that did not go well and in early January, it suddenly became apparent that Ewan's profile had disappeared from the team website.
By the end of the month, he had signed with INEOS Grenadiers.
Ewan has had a rich cycling career, with five stage wins at the Tour de France and another five at the Giro d'Italia.
He was also runner-up twice at Milan Sanremo, one of cycling's five one-day monuments and a major career goal that Ewan never quite cracked.
Ewan won nine stages at Adelaide's Tour Down Under and for several years was one of the biggest stars in Australian cycling.
"Over the course of my 11-year career, I've achieved more than I ever imagined possible," Ewan posted.
"The journey has exceeded every expectation I once had and I'm deeply grateful.
"But what once felt like everything to me no longer does."
Ewan thanked many people in his post, including his parents, wife Ryann and their three children, and his long-time manager Jason Bakker.

NRL 2025 LIVE updates: Johnston eyes try-scoring record as Rabbitohs host Dragons

Go to latest Pinned post from 7.26pm Vote now - who will win? 7.36pm Late changes St George Illawarra have made a few moves on game day. Damien Cook moves from hooker to lock, Jacob Liddle moves from the bench to hooker, Ben Murdoch-Masila goes from lock to a spot on the interchange, Raymond Faitala-Mariner moves from 18th man to the interchange, and Tyrell Sloan is now the 18th man. It's interesting to see the Dragons choose mobility over bulk in their starting forward pack. It isn't the usual tactic on wet nights. Let's see how that goes. The Rabbitohs will start 1-17. 7.36pm View from the ground By Christian Nicolussi There is next to nobody inside Accor Stadium, so let's hope Alex Johnston does not score four tries and breaks Ken Irvine's try-scoring record. To be fair, the rubbish in Sydney has been rubbish – the rain has finally just stopped – and the gates did not open the to the general public until 7pm. Both teams will not play finals, but the addition of Kaeon Koloamatangi, the weakened Dragons' middle, the form of Souths fullback Jye Gray, and the emotional toll the Red V must be feeling after so many close contests the past month, has me leaning towards the Rabbits. 7.33pm Rage … and the machines Apologies to Zack de la Rocha and Co. for that but Andrew Johns summed it up pretty well in column today when he delved into the four coaches guiding sides into a bumper Friday night slate of matches. With Ricky Stuart and Craig Bellamy, you'll never need to ask them how they feel. With Cameron Ciraldo and Ivan Cleary, it can be a little more cryptic. Who better than rugby league's eighth Immortal to take us into this world. 7.32pm Joey and Freddie give us their winners 7.26pm It's all about AJ Yes, Alex Johnston does need four tries tonight to break Ken Irvine's Australian record of 212. Four tries in a match is a lot - and it probably seems like 10 right now considering the weather of the last few days - but don't rule anything out. With that in mind, here is a top-shelf look at how Johnston got to 209 tries. It's taken a lot of work, and a lot of help from a couple of well-known Rabbitohs to get him to this stage. 7.26pm Vote now - who will win?

A-League: Kucharski tipped for Perth move after United exit

Don't miss out on the headlines from Football. Followed categories will be added to My News. Perth Glory are the frontrunners ahead of Adelaide United to sign Jaiden Kucharski after the attacker was released by Western United just six weeks after joining the crisis-torn A-League club. United announced on July 8 that the former Sydney FC forward had signed a two-year deal with the Victorian outfit. However, United has been banned from registering 23-year-old Kucharski after being sanctioned by FIFA from doing so due to a financial dispute between the club and its former championship-winning striker Aleksandar Prijovic. The ban meant Kucharski, as well as club captain Ben Garuccio, who re-signed with United after becoming a free agent, were unable to play in the team's 1-0 Australia Cup round-of-32 loss to Sydney FC last month. Since then United's problems have worsened, with the club having been stripped of its A-League licence by Football Australia on August 8 for failing to meet the criteria required to compete in the national men's and women's competitions. Ex-Sydney FC forward Jaiden Kucharski has been released by Western United. Picture:United's financial woes include a multimillion-dollar tax bill reportedly owed by the club's chairman Jason Sourasis, and players and staff receiving their monthly wages late in April, May and June. The club announced in May that KAM Melbourne, a subsidiary of American company KAM Sports, would become United's new majority investor. However, the Australian Professional Leagues is yet to receive KAM Melbourne's full ownership proposal – understood to be worth $100m when including the purchase of the club's parent company Western Melbourne Group – and therefore cannot approve it. United has until 10am on Thursday to lodge its appeal against being stripped of its licence. In the meantime, United players – who this month were paid ahead of schedule and also received overdue superannuation payments – continue to train despite their futures remaining in limbo. However, Kucharski and United have mutually and 'respectfully' agreed to part ways due mainly to the FIFA registration ban. 'While the club is disappointed with this outcome, we respect the player's decision to pursue his career elsewhere,' United said in a statement. A handful A-League clubs are interested in Kucharski's services, but it's understood the Glory are leading the race, while Adelaide remains in contention. Western Sydney Wanderers have also made inquiries. Newcastle Jets, who were interested in Kucharski before he decided to sign with United, have not yet made another offer for the former Australian under-17 representative. Sydney FC coach Ufuk Talay said on Wednesday that a possible Kucharski return to the Sky Blues had been discussed within the club. 'He's one of our boys that have come all the way through the academy,' Talay said. 'We will always have Jaiden back. We'll always provide a platform and an environment for him to come back in, and try to give him that opportunity to take the next step again.'
