Saudi Arabia Authorises VistaJet as First International Private Jet Operator for Domestic Flights

Saudi Arabia's General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) has authorised Dubai-based VistaJet to operate domestic private jet services in the kingdom, marking the first time an international operator has been granted such rights. The move follows the lifting of cabotage restrictions for on-demand charter companies on May 1, allowing foreign-registered aircraft to conduct domestic flights within Saudi borders. GACA said the approval supports its Vision 2030 plan to transform the kingdom into a global aviation hub, while boosting competition, improving service quality, and attracting new investments. VistaJet, part of Vista Global Holding founded by Swiss billionaire Thomas Flohr, has been serving Saudi Arabia for more than 15 years on international routes. The company reported a 32% year-on-year rise in programme members in the kingdom during the first half of 2025. 'Given the nature of Vista's fully owned floating fleet, the company is best positioned to offer immediate private aviation services throughout the kingdom,' VistaJet said in a statement. With its long-range Global 7500 and soon-to-arrive Global 8000 jets, clients will also be able to fly non-stop to destinations worldwide directly from Saudi Arabia. The kingdom aims to grow the general aviation sector's contribution to GDP to 7.8 billion riyals ($2.08 billion) and create 35,000 jobs by 2030. Last year, Saudi Arabia's business jet sector recorded a 24% jump in flight volumes, underscoring strong demand from wealthy tourists, corporate travelers, and government officials.

South Africa: MTN faces new US investigation into Afghanistan conduct

South African mobile network operator MTN Group is facing an investigation by a US Department of Justice grand jury into its conduct and that of its former subsidiary in Afghanistan and an Iranian cellphone carrier it partly owns, the company said. The news and a slight downward revision of its medium-term service revenue outlook for its domestic market sent its shares tumbling 9% on Monday, overshadowing results showing it made a half-year profit following a loss a year earlier. Group CEO Ralph Mupita told reporters that Africa's biggest telecoms operator had been informed by its external US counsel of the DOJ grand jury investigation, adding that it was cooperating and voluntarily responding to requests for information. Mupita declined further comment on the case MTN faces other ongoing legal cases in the United States filed on behalf of American service members and civilians who were injured or killed in Iraq and Afghanistan between 2005 and 2010 who accuse it of violating the US Anti-Terrorism Act. "The plaintiffs' complaints allege that MTN supported anti-American militias in Iraq and Afghanistan through its participation in Irancell," the company said in a statement. MTN owns 49% of Irancell. "Jurisdictional discovery in the cases, ordered in July 2023, has now closed and the plaintiffs filed an amended complaint on 6 August 2025," the company said. "The amended complaint now includes additional claims against MTN, which are similar to those asserted in the three other pending ATA (US Anti-Terrorism Act) cases in which MTN is involved. MTN will file a Motion to Dismiss the amended complaint." MTN shares fell as much as 9% before closing down 8.4%. "(The) shares have done very well coming into these (half-year) results so part of the selloff could also be profit-taking by short-term investors, given the US investigations could be an overhang," said Peter Takaendesa, chief investment officer at Mergence Investment Managers. MTN is also facing challenges in growing service revenue in its home market due to pricing pressures, intense competition and weak consumer spending. Based on assumptions regarding market conditions and outlook in South Africa, it revised its medium-term guidance for service revenue growth in South Africa to low to mid-single digits from mid-single digits. It reported headline earnings per share of 645 cents in the six months to 30 June, compared to a headline loss of 256 cents a year earlier, as macroeconomic conditions, inflation and foreign exchange rates in Nigeria and Ghana showed improved stability. Group service revenue grew by 23.2% to R105.1bn ($5.97bn) as data and fintech revenues increased by 36.5% and 37.3%, respectively. ($1 = R17.6063)

US-EU trade deal not far from ECB's baseline forecast, Lagarde says

FRANKFURT - The trade deal between the U.S. and the EU is close to the baseline assumed by the European Central Bank, but uncertainty persists in key sectors like pharmaceuticals and semiconductors, ECB President Christine Lagarde said on Wednesday. The EU accepted 15% tariffs on most items in the deal agreed last month, averting an all-out trade war and providing businesses greater clarity, even if the new barriers slow economic growth. "The trade deal establishes an effective average tariff estimated to lie between 12% and 16% for U.S. imports of euro area goods," Lagarde said in Geneva. "This effective average tariff is somewhat higher than - but still close to - the assumptions used in our baseline projections last June," she said. "The outcome of the trade deal is well below the severe scenario for U.S. tariffs of over 20%." The ECB's baseline projection assumes economic growth of 1.1% next year while the "severe" outcome would have lowered this to 0.7%, the ECB's June projections show. The U.S.-EU trade deal is still likely to weigh on economic growth, Lagarde added, saying a long-predicted slowdown was already evident in second-quarter economic data. The EU, which has always relied on extensive foreign trade for growth, should now diversify its trade with other nations to maintain growth and offset the negative impact of tariffs, Lagarde said. "While the United States is - and will remain - an important trading partner, Europe should also aim to deepen its trade ties with other jurisdictions, leveraging the strengths of its export-oriented economy," she said.
