Man accused of 1983 Sioux City murder pleads not guilty
SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — A man has pleaded not guilty to the alleged murder of a woman over four decades ago.
According to court documents, Thomas Popp, 62, submitted his plea of not guilty for one count of first-degree murder on Thursday, March 27. He is accused of killing Terri McCauley, 18, in Sioux City in Sept. 1983.

McCauley disappeared from a Sioux City parking lot on Sept. 26, 1983. Her body was then found days later near 33rd and Pavonia Streets.
On Jan. 10, 2025, a grand jury in Woodbury County District Court indicted Popp for first-degree murder. He was arrested the next day by police officers in Longview, Washington. He would then be transported to the Woodbury County Jail in early March, where he is currently being held on a $3 million bond.

McCauley, who was Native American, left behind two children. Since then, her nephew Josh Taylor has advocated for her case and the cases of other Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women to be solved.
'Terri could have been a very successful Native American woman in our community,' Taylor said at the time of Popp's arrest. 'That, unfortunately, was stolen from her.'
Popp's jury trial is set to begin June 3, 2025 in Sioux City.

A 15-year-old boy sitting at a bus stop was killed after being struck by a car in Long Beach. On June 11, Long Beach police responded to a crash at Palo Verde Avenue and Carson Street shortly before 3 p.m. A preliminary investigation revealed that a driver in an Infiniti G37 sedan was traveling westbound on Carson Street when it ran a red light at the Palo Verde Avenue intersection. Loveland police arrest street racer who fled by car and foot: ‘A dangerous problem'
DENVER (KDVR) — The Loveland Police Department reported the arrest of a street racer in a Facebook post, assuring residents that the agency is cracking down on dangerous road behaviors. The agency shared details from an incident that occurred 'a few weeks ago' that started when a traffic team saw two vehicles racing in the 3000 block of South Lincoln Avenue. Police officers initiated traffic stops, and one of the vehicles pulled off the road. The driver didn't stop there, police said, fleeing the scene on foot where he was ultimately hit with a stun gun and arrested. 'The LPD is often described as not taking these types of incidents seriously, but we want to assure the community that we do and they are being worked,' the agency said. Champaign woman to host event for gun violence, drug abuse awareness
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — A Champaign woman is helping the community come together to honor gun violence and drug abuse victims. It's personal for organizer Shanna McGuire, whose brother died of drug use and her nephew was shot and killed. 'Went all out for everything'; Remembering Trooper Corey Thompsen through running She's held an event, the Hill Celebration, in their honor since 2022, but said it's especially important this year in light of recent gun violence. Two teenagers were shot near Oakwood Trace Townhomes on Sunday. Back in March 31-year-old Anthony Miller was killed in the same area. Wesley Park sits right alongside the Champaign home complex — which will be the backdrop for McGuire's event. 'There's a saying it takes a village to raise a child, it takes a village to come together and to combat gun violence, combat even the drug use, so coming together there's unity and power in numbers,' McGuire said. The man arrested for shooting Miller was found guilty of murder on Wednesday. This comes after he was acquitted of a 2023 murder this past summer. There are a few weeks until McGuire's event on June 28. She hopes people resonate with the stories of older community members and families who have experienced gun violence like herself.
