A genetically modified pig liver that was transplanted into a brain-dead patient appeared to function successfully inside their body for 10 days, according to the scientists who performed the groundbreaking procedure.
The surgery, at a Chinese hospital last year, is thought to mark the first time a pig liver has been transplanted into a human. It raises the prospect of pig livers serving as a 'bridging organ' for patients on the waiting list for a transplant or to support liver function while their own organ regenerates.
Prof Lin Wang, who led the trial at Xijing hospital in Xi'an said: 'This is the first time we tried to unravel whether the pig liver could work well in the human body and … whether it could replace the original human liver in the future. It is our dream to make this achievement.'
The advance is the latest in a series of transplants involving pig organs since 2022. Surgeons in the US and China have transplanted pig hearts, kidneys and a thymus gland into a small number of patients. Several died within months, although their severe illness at the outset meant it was unclear whether the transplants were a factor. But others have made a good recovery and have left hospital.
The latest procedure was carried out in a 50-year-old man diagnosed with brain death after a severe head injury. The patient's own liver was intact and, in a surgery that took more than 10 hours, the organ taken from a genetically modified Bama miniature pig was plumbed into his blood supply as an additional liver.
The pig had six genetic modifications aimed at preventing immune rejection. These included deactivating genes that contribute to the production of sugars on the surface of pig cells, which the human immune system attacks, and introducing genes that express human proteins to 'humanise' the liver.
After the transplant, the pig liver showed signs of functioning, including producing bile, which helps break down fats in the digestive system, and porcine albumin, a blood protein.
'There was good evidence of compatibility, which is really exciting,' said Peter Friend, a professor of transplantation at the University of Oxford. 'Normally if you put a pig organ in it will be stone dead in a few minutes because you get hyper-acute rejection.'
The team behind the advance, described in the journal Nature, said it was not clear whether the liver would have been able to fully support the patient, given that he had an existing liver and because the liver was removed after 10 days at the request of his family. 'We could not see whether the pig liver could support a patient with severe liver failure,' said Wang.
Even if pig livers only partly replace liver function, they could still be valuable as a 'bridging' transplant. Friend said that 'elegant surgical plumbing' used by the team meant this could be a relatively straightforward procedure.
'They basically slot the liver into … the main artery that runs from the leg towards the heart,' he said. 'That makes it safer and much less prone to complications and something that can be removed as and when it's not needed.'
Prof Muhammad Mohiuddin, director of the cardiac xenotransplantation programme at the University of Maryland, said: 'This is a major leap forward for the field. With a liver, you don't have to keep it for the rest of your life.
'You can use it as a bridge until a human liver is available for transplant or it can be used as a partial support until the liver regenerates. I firmly believe that this can work.'

Astronomers have discovered strong evidence for a giant gas planet in a nearby solar system – with moons that could be habitable. The planet was first detected by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) in the star system Alpha Centauri, around 4.5 light years away. The Saturn–sized planet orbits a star similar to our Sun but is likely enveloped in a thick gas cloud meaning it could not support life itself. However, it could have icy moons which may provide the right conditions for life to form. 'This is an incredibly exciting find,' Dr Carly Howett, associate professor of space instrumentation at the University of Oxford, told the BBC. 'Four light years is a long way for us, but in the context of our galaxy, it's very close – it's practically in our cosmic backyard. 'The fact that this planet orbits a star so similar to our Sun, with comparable temperature and brightness, makes it an important target when we think about habitable worlds.' While it was first detected last year, the planet seemed to have disappeared in follow–up observations. Astronomers are now looking for it again to prove it definitely exists. Dr Howett explained that the planet may have 'disappeared' in recent observations because it is currently too close to its star, which is blocking the view with the amount of bright light being emitted. Experts now hope to use the Grace Roman Space Telescope – a new NASA instrument which is due to start operating in 2027 – to look for more signs of the planet. Further observations by JWST may be able to provide more detail on what the planet is made up of and what it looks like. This could also provide crucial evidence on how habitable any orbiting moons may be. Some of the gas giants in our own solar system – Saturn and Jupiter – have icy moons, and missions have been launched to explore whether they could support life. These planets, however, are relatively far away from our Sun. In comparison, this potential 'new' planet is close to its star. 'With this system being so close to us, any exoplanets found would offer our best opportunity to collect data on planetary systems other than our own,' Charles Beichman, from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said. 'Yet, these are incredibly challenging observations to make, even with the world's most powerful space telescope, because these stars are so bright, close, and move across the sky quickly.' 'If confirmed, the potential planet seen in the Webb image of Alpha Centauri A would mark a new milestone for exoplanet imaging efforts,' co–first author Aniket Sanghi, from the California Institute of Technology, said. 'Of all the directly imaged planets, this would be the closest to its star seen so far. It's also the most similar in temperature and age to the giant planets in our solar system, and nearest to our home, Earth. 'Its very existence in a system of two closely separated stars would challenge our understanding of how planets form, survive, and evolve in chaotic environments.' The new findings have been published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

SOPPENG, Indonesia, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Scientists have found a series of stone tools on Indonesia's Sulawesi island they say may be evidence of humans living 1.5 million years ago on islands between Asia and Australia, the earliest known humans in the Wallacea region. Archaeologists from Australia and Indonesia found the small, chipped tools, used to cut little animals and carve rocks, under the soil in the region of Soppeng in South Sulawesi. Radioactive tracing of these tools and the teeth of animals found around the site were dated at up to 1.48 million years ago. The findings could transform theories of early human migrations, according to an article the archaeologists published in the journal Nature in August. The earliest Wallacean humans, pre-historic persons known as Homo Erectus, were thought to have only settled in Indonesia's Flores island and Philippines' Luzon island around 1.02 million years ago, as they were thought to be incapable of distant sea travel, proving the significance of the Sulawesi findings in theories of migration. 'These were artefacts made by ancient humans who lived on the earth long before the evolution of our species, Homo Sapiens,' said Adam Brumm, lead archaeologist from Griffith University in Queensland, Australia. 'We think Homo Erectus somehow got from the Asian mainland across a significant ocean gap to this island, Sulawesi, at least 1 million years ago," Brumm said. Wallacea is a region in Eastern Indonesia including several islands such as Sulawesi, Lombok, Flores, Timor, Sumbawa that lie between Borneo and Java and Australia and New Guinea. The region is named for the naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace who studied the fauna and flora of the area.
