During the early hours of Tuesday, a police team was doing a routine check of vehicles coming from Indirapuram at the Sector 2/5 culvert. When they signalled two persons on a black motorcycle (Apache) without a number plate to stop, the riders suddenly braked, turned left, and attempted to flee towards the UP Gate bridge. Police pursued them, and due to the uneven terrain, the motorcycle hit some stones and slipped near pillar number 14, causing the riders to fall.

CMRL accident: The husband and father who never got to reach home

Thousands of motorists ride past Manapakkam and Porur towards Poonamallee below the Metro Rail elevated corridor, the construction of which has been ongoing for years. Sadly, Ramesh, 43, was caught under the girders and died when they fell from the under-construction flyover, after he stopped briefly on the roadside while returning home from work on Thursday night. According to police, Ramesh, a native of Kaliyakavilai in Nagercoil district, was caught under one of the I-girders that fell from the flyover under construction at Manapakkam. In the city, he lived with his wife Rekha and their 10-year-old daughter at Janaki Nagar, Kattupakkam. He worked at a private firm dealing with billing machines in Choolaimedu. A family friend said, 'At around 9 p.m., he called his wife and told her that he was in Velachery and riding back home. He also said he would arrive in an hour or so after finishing his work. After a few hours, she became anxious and called one of his friends to check on him.' The friend searched for him along the usual route on Mount-Poonamallee Road late at night but was trapped in traffic congestion caused by the collapse of girders. Later that night, he managed to reach the accident spot and found his friend trapped under the debris. The family identified the body after the girders were removed from the site at around 1.30 a.m., police said. Just before the girders collapsed from the flyover, vehicles continued to cross the stretch. Ramesh was caught under the girders when he stopped briefly on the road, police added. The police recovered the body and sent it to Government General Hospital, Chromepet, for post-mortem. After the post-mortem, the body was handed over to the family and taken to his native place. Nandambakkam Police registered a case under Section 105 of the BNS against L&T Project in-charge Narendra Krishna Prabhakar, Project Manager Tata Rao, Construction Manager Mallikarjun, and Erection Manager Benim, police sources said.

Sex racket at spa in Vyttila busted, two held

KOCHI: The police on Thursday raided an ayurvedic massage centre in Vyttila that was allegedly being used to run a sex racket and arrested two persons. Rajesh M, 48, of Alappuzha and Aneesh, 50, were nabbed in the raid at Punarjani Ayurvedic Spa, which was operating from the ground and first floors of a rented building on Bund Road in Thykoodam. A case was also registered against three others — Ajay P S, 27, of Pindimana in Kothamangalam; Abymon N Ravi, 38, of Keerithode in Idukki, and Bineesh M G, 45, of Kuttampuzha in Kothamangalam — who managed to escape. The raid was carried out following a tip-off. Police officials said 10 women were found staying on the premises. 'The accused had been operating the spa for over six months. We rescued the women. Some of them revealed they were lured with offers of legitimate employment at an ayurveda centre but were later coerced into immoral activities,' an officer said. A case has been registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Immoral Traffic (Prevention) Act.

71-yr-old's hit-and-run turns out to be case of murder in Kerala; four arrested

KALPETTA: Beeyumma was believed to have died in a hit-and-run. Now, residents of Meppadi are in shock from fresh revelations that a road-rage incident over a scooter overtaking a four-wheeler led to the murder of the 71-year-old. While relatives, locals, and even police were convinced that the Nellimunda ward resident had died in a road accident, later revelations by Beeyumma's grandson, 19-year-old Aflah, who was severely injured in the incident, on June 8, proved a turning point in the case. Based on further investigations, which also relied on CCTV footage, and the statements of eyewitnesses, including Aflah, Aramanganam, Kasaragod natives Akhil Kallingal, 26, Prashanth Puthiyavalappu, 21, Nidhi Pachillankara, 20, and Nithin Narayanan, 22, and a 17-year-old minor boy were slapped with murder charges, five days after the incident. Four of them were arrested on Friday, while the minor will be presented before the Juvenile Justice Board on Saturday. 'We thought it was a hit-and run accident. Beeyumma died on the spot. When Aflah, who was severely injured and undergoing treatment in hospital, regained consciousness he muttered, 'They hit us deliberately,'' said Shihab C, a Nellimunda resident and relative of Beeyumma. The youngsters from Kasaragod were on their way to Chooralmala in a Bolero -- under the influence of alcohol -- after attending the Kottiyoor temple festival. Beeyumma and Aflah were also proceeding to Chooralmala on a scooter. They entered the main road from Mappilathottam and overtook the Bolero, which led to a verbal argument between occupants of both vehicles. In a fit of rage, the youths chased the scooter and rammed it from behind. Meppadi police SHO A U Jayaprakash said Beeyumma died after being run over by the Bolero, while Aflah was deliberately dragged some distance by the four-wheeler. 'Akhil, who was driving the vehicle, was arrested on the day of the accident. But he was charged under Section 304A of BNS (causing death by negligence). Akhil was drunk at the time of the crime. Later, after an investigation, we found that it was a case of murder with others in the Bolero also involved. They were also arrested,' said Jayaprakash. 'There were five bottles of beer and other liquor bottles in the Bolero. All of the passengers in the vehicle are equally guilty. If any one of them had tried to restrain Akhil, who was driving the vehicle, Beeyumma and Aflah would not have suffered this fate,' added Shihab.
