Bengaluru stampede: A list of major stampedes in India
Over 50 people have been killed in stampedes in 2025 so far at temples, railway stations, and at the Maha Kumbh, among others.
Here is a list of some major tragedies that have taken place in the country in the recent years:
June 4, 2025: The RCB victory celebration of the team's maiden IPL win in 18 years turned into tragedy as at least 11 fans died and several were injured in a stampede near the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
May 3, 2025: At least seven persons were killed and 80 people injured in a stampede in North Goa's Shirgao village in Bicholim taluka, where lakhs of devotees thronged to participate in the annual 'Lairai Jatra' at Shree Lairai Devi Temple.
February 15, 2025: At least 18 people were killed and more than a dozen injured in a stampede that broke out late at night at the New Delhi Railway Station. Most of the passengers who died where Maha Kumbh pilgrims.
January 29, 2025: Thirty people were killed and 60 injured in a pre-dawn stampede at the Sangam area of the Maha Kumbh as millions of pilgrims jostled for space to take a holy dip on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya, one of the most auspicious days of the Hindu calendar.
January 8, 2025: At least six devotees were killed and dozens injured in a stampede as hundreds of them jostled for tickets for Vaikunta Dwara Darshanam at Lord Venkateswara Swamy temple in Tirumala Hills.
December 4, 2024:A 35-year-old woman died and a boy was injured at Sandhya Theatre in Hyderabad in a stampede where Allu Arjun's blockbuster 'Pushpa 2' was screened.
August 12, 2024: Seven people diedand 10 were injured in a stampede at Baba Siddhnath Temple on Banavar hillock in central Bihar. The incident occurred during a crowded puja (worship) event on the fourth Monday of the holy Shrawan month.
July 2, 2024: More than 100 people, including women and children, were killed after a stampede broke out at a 'satsang' (prayer meeting) organised by a self-styled godman, Bhole Baba aka Narayan Saakar Hari, in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras.
March 31, 2023: At least 36 people died when the slab constructed on top of an ancient 'bawdi' or well collapsed during a 'havan' programme held on the occasion of Ram Navami at a temple in Indore city.
January 1, 2022: At least 12 people died and over a dozen were injured in a stampede at the famous Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir triggered by a heavy rush of devotees.
September 29, 2017: Twenty-three people lost their lives and 36 were injured in the stampede on the narrow bridge connecting the Elphinstone Road station of the Western Railway with Parel station of the Central Railway in Mumbai.
July 14, 2015: Twenty-seven pilgrims died and 20 others were injured in a stampede at a major bathing spot on the banks of the Godavari river where a huge crowd of devotees had gathered on the opening day of 'Pushkaram' festival in Rajahmundry in Andhra Pradesh.
October 3, 2014: Thirty-two people were killed and 26 others injured in a stampede at Gandhi Maidan in Patna, shortly after the Dussehra celebrations ended.
October 13, 2013: 115 people were killed and over 100 injured in a stampede during the Navratri festivities near Ratangarh temple in Madhya Pradesh's Datia district. The stampede was triggered by rumours that a river bridge the devotees were crossing was about to collapse.
November 19, 2012: Around 20 people were killed and many others injured as a makeshift bridge caved in, triggering a stampede during the Chhath Puja at Adalat Ghat on the bank of river Ganga in Patna.
November 8, 2011: At least 20 people were killed in a stampede in Haridwar at Har-ki-Pauri ghat on the banks of the Ganga river.
January 14, 2011:At least 104 Sabarimala devotees were killed and over 40 were injured in a stampede when a jeep crashed into homebound pilgrims at Pulmedu in Kerala's Idukki district.
March 4, 2010: About 63 people were killed in a stampede at Ram Janki Temple of Kripalu Maharaj in Uttar Pradesh's Pratapgarh district as people gathered to collect free clothes and food from the self-styled godman.
September 30, 2008: Nearly 250 devotees were killed and over 60 injured in a stampede triggered by rumours of a bomb going off at Chamunda Devi temple in Rajasthan's Jodhpur city.
August 3, 2008: 162 dead, 47 injured in a stampede triggered by rumours of rockslides at Naina Devi temple in Himachal Pradesh's Bilaspur district.
January 25, 2005: Over 340 devotees were trampled to death and hundreds injured during an annual pilgrimage at Mandhardevi temple in Maharashtra's Satara district. The accident occurred when some people fell down on the steps made slippery by the devotees breaking coconuts.
August 27, 2003: 39 people were killed and around 140 injured in a stampede during the holy bath at the Kumbh Mela in Maharashtra's Nashik district.

Bengaluru To Be Replaced By This Venue For Women's ODI World Cup Matches
The Greenfield International Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram is likely to replace Bengaluru's M. Chinnaswamy Stadium as a venue for the upcoming 2025 Women's ODI World Cup, set to be played from September 30 to November 2. Sources aware of the development have told IANS that the Karnataka government not granting permission for hosting games at the stadium due to serious safety concerns on any activity at the venue after the June 4 stampede has meant that its allotted matches for the Women's ODI World Cup will now be moved to Thiruvananthapuram. 'Yes, it has come to light that due to no permissions coming on time for hosting World Cup games in Bengaluru, it will now be moving to Thiruvananthapuram, which is also an ideal venue due to weather conditions and its proximity to Colombo. The ICC will be officially announcing it soon,' sources further told IANS on Tuesday. Uncertainty over future matches taking place at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium has persisted since the June 4 stampede outside its premises during Royal Challengers Bengaluru's IPL 2025 victory celebrations. The incident led to 11 deaths and over 50 people being injured, with the investigation still ongoing. Moreover, the findings by the Justice John Michael D'Cunha Commission had said that the M Chinnaswamy Stadium is ill-equipped to host large-scale events in a safe manner. While saying that the 'design and structure' of the venue are inherently 'unsuitable and unsafe' for mass gatherings, the committee also warned that hosting high-attendance events at the stadium would pose 'unacceptable risks to public safety, urban mobility, and emergency preparedness'. Due to this, the KSCA was forced to shift Maharaja T20 Trophy games to Wadeyar Ground in Mysuru while Alur hosted the Maharani T20 competition matches. As per the original schedule, Bengaluru was the venue for the opening game of the women's ODI World Cup between India and Sri Lanka, as well as host one semi-final and possibly the final on November 2. Bengaluru was also set to host two warm-up games ahead of the showpiece event. The Greenfield International Stadium, meanwhile, hasn't hosted women's international cricket games yet. But it has hosted four men's T20Is and two ODI games so far, as well as staged Youth Tests and ODIs. It was also a venue for the 2023 Men's ODI World Cup warm-ups, but games were abandoned due to incessant rain. Visakhapatnam, Indore, Guwahati, and Colombo, Sri Lanka's capital, are the other venues for the tournament to be played in a round-robin format among eight teams – defending champions Australia, Bangladesh, England, India, New Zealand, Pakistan, South Africa, and Sri Lanka. The 2025 Women's ODI World Cup will also be the first women's global cricket event in the sub-continent since India hosted the 2016 ICC Women's T20 World Cup. India has also staged the Women's ODI World Cup in 1978, 1997, and 2013, respectively.

Protests erupt in Karnataka as devotees demand action over Dharmasthala defamation
Karnataka witnessed massive protests across multiple districts as pro-Hindu activists, BJP supporters, and devotees of Dharmasthala condemned alleged derogatory remarks and misinformation targeting the sacred temple town, referring to the ongoing probe in mass burial Chikkamagaluru, over 2,000 devotees participated in a 2 km protest march from the Taluk Office to Azad Park, singing devotional hymns and beating drums. Hundreds of women joined the rally, condemning what they described as a conspiracy to malign Koppal, thousands of women, along with a differently-abled Muslim man in a wheelchair, took part in a rally from Ishwar Park to the DC's office. Several Muslim women also joined, demanding action against those spreading false propaganda about the temple. In Yadgir, members of the Dharmasthala Devotees Forum held a rally from Subhash Circle to the DC's office, urging strict action against Girish Mattannavar, Mahesh Thimmaroddi, and YouTuber Sameer for allegedly defaming the Mysuru, thousands of women devotees marched from Old Dairy Circle to the DC's office holding placards in support of Dharmadhikari Veerendra Heggade. They demanded transparency in the SIT investigation, protection for Hindu temples, and warned that those defaming the shrine must face Kalaburagi, Hindu and Kannada organisations, along with former BJP MLA Dattatreya Patil and other leaders, held a rally from Jagat Circle to the DC's office after garlanding the Basavanna statue. Protesters called for action against fake YouTubers and individuals tarnishing Dharmasthala's all districts, protesters submitted memorandums to the government through Deputy Commissioners, asserting, 'We stand with Dharmasthala and its Dharmadhikari.'Meanwhile, in the ongoing Dharmasthala mass burial case, authorities conducted a Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) scan at Point No. 13 yesterday morning as part of the exhumation process. After nearly 40 minutes, no human remains were the unsuccessful scan, heavy machinery was brought in for excavation, with officials suspecting that soil dumped during past dam construction may be covering the alleged burial spot.
