Everyone needs a Scott Carson in their squad.That might not have been a sentence you expected to read today but it is the opinion of Kyle Walker, who has shared the Manchester City changing room with the 39-year-old goalkeeper since 2019.Carson has quite the reputation for being one of football's good guys and has also acquired an incredible CV since his senior career started way back in 2003 at Leeds.But, despite filling his trophy cabinet, he has only played twice in six years for City and has not kept a Premier League clean sheet since 14 May 2011.Walker told The Kyle Walker Podcast: "For someone of his age to have played the amount of games he's played. To come in every day knowing you're the third-choice keeper... mentally, I have to take my hat off to him. "Scott Carson could retire, he's had a fantastic career but to still have the love for football and do what he does, these are the people you need around the place."
Who is Scott Carson?
If you haven't been watching the Premier League for long then you could be forgiven for not knowing who Carson is. After all, he has only played twice in all competitions since joining City in 2019 - the last appearance coming in May 2022.To put it simply, Carson is a four-time Premier League winner with two Champions League titles, an FA Cup, two League Cups, two Super Cups and a Club World Cup.The first of his major trophies came back in 2005 when he was an unused substitute for Liverpool during their Champions League win in Istanbul and then followed it up with the Super Cup. The following year, he was part of the Reds squad who lifted the FA Cup.Incredibly, Carson's last clean sheet in England's top flight came 14 years ago - in a 1-0 win over Everton while playing for West Brom.Since that last shut out, he picked up his fourth and final England cap and also added nine of the 12 major trophies he has won to his collection.Despite spending eight years at Bursaspor, Wigan and Derby, the Premier League champions came calling and two years on loan at the Etihad Stadium resulted in being signed permanently by Pep Guardiola.Carson may well be City's third-choice stopper behind Ederson and Stefan Ortega but he has earned himself three new one-year deals. Is a fourth on the cards soon?

David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Vincent Kompany are just three names who are etched into City history forever.But, if we are talking trophies and influence on the team-mates around them, then Carson is right up there alongside these City legends. Just ask Pep Guardiola. The Catalan has managed the best City have had to offer in modern times, but he encourages young players to learn from the veteran goalkeeper."I was fortunate in Manchester to know this guy," said Guardiola. "Sometimes as a manager you get the opportunity to know people like him – he's like a captain, built incredible love for the team. I'm pretty sure when we need him, he'll respond!"The best advice I could give to the young players is to stay around Scott Carson as much as possible in the locker room and on the pitch."It would be better than being with me. If they spend a lot of time, listen to him and pay attention, that is the best advice and learning they can get about their future careers."Every second he is training and every minute you get on the pitch and in the changing room [with Carson], you value."It's like the young actors have to be with the old actors on the set. They are wiser and have the values of the profession."

Things that will be new for Wrexham in the Championship
Phil Parkinson's men finished runners-up in League One this term, securing an historic third successive promotion. The Reds have climbed from the National League to the second tier where they will ply their trade for the first time in 43 years. One positive in going up to the division one below the Premier League is that Wrexham will enter the FA Cup at the third round stage. For a club that has reached the quarter-finals three times in their history, it's about time Wrexham fans experienced another run on the road to Wembley. During their last stint in the old Second Division, which lasted four seasons, Wrexham twice reached the fifth round and they never lost a third round tie. One of the highlights was a 3-1 win at Brian Clough's Nottingham Forest in 1982. Forest were European Cup champions at the time but Dixie McNeil, Mick Vinter and Steve Dowman shut the legendary manager up before the Reds bowed out 2-1 to Chelsea when the fourth round tie was decided following a second replay, and Mel Sutton's side were relegated back to Division Three at the end of that 1981-82 season. During the 15-year non-league nightmare, Wrexham came in at the fourth qualifying round stage and had to win three games just to stand a chance of receiving a plum third round tie against a Premier League side, while two victories were required to reach that stage since returning to the EFL with the Reds entering in round one. But the Reds will definitely be in the hat for the third round draw next season. That's a huge boost and so is the fact that there will be no EFL Trophy distractions, with Championship teams not involved in the competition where Parkinson's men reached the semi-finals this season, playing three group-stage games and four knockout ties. But Wrexham will play more midweek league games in the second tier because of international weekend breaks. There will be no league matches on the weekends of September 6, October 11 and November 15 this year, and March 28, 2026. Although Wrexham got used to playing at big stadiums this season in League One, 20 and 30,000 capacities are the norm in the Championship. The biggest attendance could be away at Sheffield Wednesday whose Hillsborough capacity is a whopping 39,732! With the temporary stand at The Racecourse being taken down this summer and work starting on the new Kop, Wrexham will have the smallest capacity in the division at just over 10,000. The next lowest is Oxford United's Kassam Stadium which has room for 12,500 fans. Parkinson will be able to name nine substitutes next term - two more than he could select in League One and Two, and up from five replacements in the National League. It's been an amazing journey since Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney became co-chairmen and while the step-up to the Championship will be the biggest experienced so far, Parkinson, his staff and players are there on merit and will relish the challenge ahead.

Gary Lineker surprised by Arsenal transfer stance after £30m man completes move
Arsenal are in the market for a new striker this summer and Gary Lineker was surprised the Gunners did not appear to target new Chelsea signing Liam Delap Gary Lineker has expressed his surprise that Arsenal overlooked Liam Delap in their quest for a new striker. The 22-year-old forward recently joined Chelsea from Ipswich Town. The Gunners have identified signing a new number nine as a priority in the summer transfer window, with discussions underway for RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko and links to Sporting CP's Viktor Gyokeres. Manager Mikel Arteta will hope that signing a centre forward will be the key to ending the club's over two-decade wait for a Premier League title. While Arsenal are in the process of bringing in a striker, Chelsea swooped in to activate the £30million release clause in Delap's Ipswich contract. Praising the move, Lineker thinks the forward should have been a top target for Arsenal. "Delap to Chelsea, interesting one," Lineker said on The Rest Is Football podcast. "I thought maybe Arsenal would go for him. Perhaps they did, I don't know, but Chelsea have got their man. "We'd said, didn't we, many times that Chelsea needed backup for [Nicolas] Jackson up top or an alternative. I think he's a young, exciting centre forward. I saw someone, I can't remember who it was, said they saw a bit of a young Alan Shearer in him. "I think that's the only thing that Chelsea were missing. I mean, Jackson's got something in him, but his finishing is not as good as it could be. And if Delap does realise his full potential, then that might just be the missing ingredient." While Lineker discussed what Delap could bring to Chelsea, it mirrors the qualities Arsenal have been lacking in equal measure. Lineker likened him to a young Shearer, and the Newcastle United legend commended the new Chelsea man's style of play. "I think he's a bit old-fashioned. He's like a throwback from what a centre forward was maybe 20, 30 years ago, where they were all in fashion," Shearer said. "He's always like aggressive, horrible to play against, doesn't mind mixing it up, and obviously scores goals. "I mean, the number of goals he scored in a really struggling team, that is only going to get better. I think at his age, the ability he's got now, I think he's got a really bright future and I like him." The 22-year-old netted 12 league goals for an Ipswich side that suffered relegation, finishing 16 points behind Tottenham Hotspur in 17th place. Meanwhile, Sesko, who is the same age as Delap, bagged 21 goals in all competitions for a Leipzig side that competed in the Champions League and narrowly missed out on the European places in the Bundesliga. The Slovenia international has played in European competitions for the last four seasons and scored 39 goals in 87 games during his two-year spell with Leipzig. Given his more established record for a side in one of Europe's top five leagues, combined with his potential to improve, it's far from unreasonable for Arsenal to have opted to target him over other options. However, any potential deal for Sesko could break Arsenal's £60m transfer record, currently held by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. The 22-year-old forward was previously linked with a move to the Gunners in 2024 but signed a new contract last summer, thus increasing his market value. The absence of a consistent goalscorer at Arsenal was glaringly obvious this season. Kai Havertz led the scoring charts with just nine league goals despite a lengthy spell on the sidelines due to injury. This lack of a prolific striker played a significant role in finishing 10 points adrift of Premier League champions Liverpool.
