Web Release20-06-2025
As part of the ongoing 'Let's Light Up Our Community' initiative, Spinneys, in collaboration with Rebirth Beirut, the Beirut Development Committee, and the Hamra Traders Association, lit up the main Hamra Street in the heart of Beirut on the evening of Wednesday, June 18, 2025, at 7:30 PM, in front of the Spinneys – Hamra branch.
The event opened with a speech by the Founder and President of Rebirth Beirut, Mr. Gaby Fernaine, who welcomed the attendees and praised the resilience of Beirut's residents and their determination to hold on to hope despite all circumstances. He emphasized that this spirit is what drives the association to continue its work. In his speech, he said: 'Every Light we turn on is a new point of hope for this city, and every street we illuminate is one step closer to the beautiful Beirut we love and dream of.' He added that this initiative, which began in May 2022 in collaboration with Medco, has so far succeeded in lighting 152 streets, 11 main avenues, 4 squares, 2 gardens, 2 staircases, and a tunnel in the capital—stressing that the work will continue and will not stop.
On this occasion, Mr. Hassan Ezzeddine, Chairman of Spinneys Lebanon, delivered a speech in which he emphasized the importance of partnership between the private sector and civil society. He praised the 'Let's Light Up Our Community' initiative for helping revive the life pulse of the capital's streets and reaffirmed the company's commitment to supporting such developmental and humanitarian projects.
Beirut Governor Judge Marwan Abboud also spoke, highlighting the vital role of civil society, especially Rebirth Beirut. He noted that such initiatives genuinely contribute to helping Beirut recover. He stated: 'Today we witness how determination and belief in the city can truly bring about real change.'
The event saw remarkable attendance, including official, municipal, and civil figures, most notably Governor Judge Marwan Abboud, newly elected Municipal Council President Mr. Ibrahim Zeidan and council members, along with members of the association's board of trustees, representatives from the Hamra Traders Association, the Beirut Development Committee, civil society organizations, friends and supporters of the street, and representatives from Lebanese media outlets who covered the event and helped convey its message.
The association extended special thanks to Mr. Malek Hejazi for his initiative and on-ground support of the project since day one, and to Ms. Michèle Chammas Gharzouzi, Chief Innovation Officer at Medco, who has been a key partner in this initiative.
At the conclusion of the event, Rebirth Beirut announced that its next stop will be lighting up the airport road—from the ESCWA building to the Middle East Airlines (MEA) headquarters—as part of a comprehensive project approved by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, in coordination with the Governor of Beirut and relevant municipalities, and under the patronage of MEA. The project is expected to be completed within approximately one month.
Rebirth Beirut continues its mission of lighting the streets of the capital, one by one—reviving hope and restoring life to a city that never loses its spark.

Lebanon's President Joseph Aoun visits Algeria in effort to bolster bilateral ties

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun is on a two-day state visit to Algeria, in a move aimed at revitalising bilateral relations and reinforcing Lebanon's diplomatic engagement with the Arab world. He is accompanied by Foreign Minister Youssef Rajji and Information Minister Paul Morcos, according to a statement from the Lebanese presidency. It marks the first official visit by a Lebanese president to Algeria since Emile Lahoud travelled to the North African nation in 2002. In 2013, then-President Michel Sleiman made a brief technical stop in Algiers, where he was received at the airport by Algerian counterpart Abdelaziz Bouteflika. This week's visit is being framed as a strategic step intended to reinvigorate co-operation across sectors, particularly energy. Lebanese media have reported that several agreements are expected to be signed, including collaborations in oil and gas. The trip may also pave the way for establishing a direct flight route between Beirut and Algiers. Since taking office in January, Mr Aoun – a former commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces – has prioritised restoring Lebanon's ties with Arab nations as a cornerstone of his foreign policy. In his inaugural address, he underscored a commitment to strengthening alliances with Arab and Gulf partners, judicial and economic reform and consolidating the state's monopoly on arms. His diplomatic agenda has so far included high-level visits to Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt, and most recently to Bahrain, where plans were finalised to establish a permanent Bahraini diplomatic mission in Beirut and expand bilateral co-operation. These successive visits reflect an effort to reset ties with the broader Arab world, re-establish confidence and secure crucial support as Lebanon grapples with a deep-rooted economic crisis that began in 2019 and the aftermath of a year-long war between Israel and the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah. The international community has tied major aid and investment to comprehensive reforms and the disarmament of non-state forces, chiefly Hezbollah and Palestinian factions. In February, Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf visited Beirut, where met with Mr Aoun. Relations between Beirut and Algiers have experienced ups and downs. Algeria has offered Lebanon support in recent years. In 2024, it donated 30,000 tonnes of fuel oil – enough to generate 250 megawatts of electricity for about 20 days – after the country's only remaining operational power plant in Zahrani shut down because of fuel shortages. Lebanon's electricity sector has been crumbling for about three decades given a lack of investment and corruption, failing to provide round-the-clock electricity. The country has a complex history with Algeria's national state-owned oil company Sonatrach. In 2020, the company ended its fuel supply contract with Lebanon after a high-profile scandal exposed deep corruption and mismanagement within Lebanon's energy sector. The contract, signed in 2005 and renewed several times, had allowed Sonatrach's offshore unit to supply fuel oil for Lebanon's power plants. However, in early 2020, Lebanese authorities launched an investigation revealing that the supplied fuel was substandard and failed to meet required specifications. The scandal implicated several officials at Électricité du Liban (EDL), the Ministry of Energy and Customs, leading to a wave of arrests, including ministry staff and representatives from the local subcontractor. The deal, for which terms were kept secret for 15 years, was initially thought to be a state-to-state agreement. However, a Lebanese judicial investigation revealed that Sonatrach's subsidiary actually subcontracted the delivery to private companies, which were accused of falsifying laboratory results and bribery. Sonatrach denied any involvement in shipping tainted fuel. The Algerian presidency described the case as a 'Lebanese-Lebanese issue' in which Algeria was not involved.

The CMA CGM Foundation Celebrates the Graduation of the First Promotion of Its 'Training for the Future' Program

The CMA CGM Foundation Celebrates the Graduation of the First Promotion of Its 'Training for the Future' Program To support training and job opportunities in Lebanon's agricultural sector, the CMA CGM Foundation has partnered with the NGO arcenciel, the Notre-Dame de la Consolata Technical Institute (run by the Jesuit Fathers), the agricultural company Agrotica, and Lebanon Packing House (LPH) —a state-of-the-art packing facility, which is part of CMA CGM Lebanon, that offers value and international standards to its customers. Over the past 12 months, 24 trainees from across the Bekaa region completed a practical training program with 100 days of courses, including 80 days of field work, planned around the farming seasons. Training took place mainly at the Domaine de Taanayel and in Damour, covering modern farming methods, good harvesting practices, post-harvest work, and basic farm management. Trainees worked in Agrotica's vineyard and then applied their new skills by developing a three-hectare pilot vineyard at the Domaine de Taanayel, gaining hands-on experience in real agricultural environments. They also trained at Lebanon Packing House (LPH) in Taanayel, which offers complete solutions from: quality check, sorting, packing, palletizing, cooling, conditioning to storage with a primary focus on grapes, avocados, cherries, apricots, tomatoes, apples, pears, citrus and all sort of fruits and vegetables. Its world class services help local farmers export their crops to foreign markets and enable the development of Lebanese agriculture – both locally and internationally – while creating different job opportunities in the region. CMA CGM Group's specialized fruit and vegetable packing facility, which provides Lebanese farmers with complete post-harvest support and preparation services. With growing global demand for fresh produce like table grapes and avocados — crops where Lebanon has strong potential thanks to its climate, geographical location, and farming know-how — this project helps meet two big needs: filling the shortage of skilled mid-level farm workers and improving farming practices to help local farmers compete better in export markets. Through this training, these young technicians can now take on key jobs on Lebanese farms — as team leaders, logistics coordinators, or orchard managers — bridging the gap between farm workers and agricultural engineers. This first promotion marks an important step towards building a stronger, more competitive farming sector that creates jobs and supports rural areas. This project is part of the 'Training for the Future' program launched by the CMA CGM Foundation in 2024, which also offers training in maritime jobs (mechanics, electrical work, onboard hospitality) and energy efficiency (solar systems, insulation). These programs are run with partners such as the European Institute for Cooperation and Development (IECD) and the International Maritime Academy (IMA). In total, more than 239 young Lebanese are now training in agriculture, maritime transport, and renewable energy and will receive job support through December 2025.
