Thomas & Friends to release unseen pilot episode of TV show
An original, unseen version of the pilot episode of Thomas & Friends is set to be released to mark the 80th anniversary of the property.
The character of Thomas the Tank Engine originated from the series of British children's books The Railway Series, which was first published back in 1945 by Wilbert Awdry.
The books were then used as the basis for the TV series Thomas & Friends, which lasted from 1984 to 2021.
Having dug deep into their archives, the unseen footage from 'Down The Mine' - the original 1983 pilot episode - is a celebration of the classic model series.
The 40-year-old recording was crafted on 35mm film trims and has been pieced back together before being rebuilt and digitally remastered audibly and visibly.
Mike O'Donnell, the series composer between 1984-2003, has also crafted a bespoke musical arrangement to accompany the special episode.
Voiceover from musician Ringo Starr will also be included, which will also contain previously unheard narration.
The episode will be available to watch on the Thomas & Friends YouTube channel.
Roberto Stanichi, executive vice president, Hot Wheels and Global Head of Vehicles & Building Sets at Mattel, said: 'For 80 years, the Thomas & Friends brand has brought joy to generations, sharing timeless stories and valuable life lessons.
'As we celebrate this momentous year, we're unveiling 40-year-old footage and newly uncovered stories from the vault for the first time ever, offering longtime fans and new audiences the chance to reconnect with the beloved adventures of Thomas & Friends in new and nostalgic ways.'
Thomas & Friends to launch auction of brand memorabilia
The franchise has also partnered with specialist memorabilia auctioneer Propstore to give fans of the show the exclusive opportunity to own original pieces from the brand's history.
More details on the auction can be found on the website here, which will be open for bidding from May 12-28.
The collection includes signed items from celebrity friends, original artwork and props from the iconic stop motion scenes that first aired in 1984.
Also to be auctioned are one-of-a-kind pieces signed by the iconic British actors to have voiced some of the many characters over the years - including Olivia Coleman, Eddie Redmayne and Hugh Bonneville.
Mattel UK will be donating all of the NET proceeds collected from the auctions to the National Autistic Society, the UK's leading charity that provides support, guidance and advice for autistic people and their families.

The motor was owned by Gallagher despite the fact he couldn't drive it ROLL WITH IT Noel Gallagher's 'excellent condition' 1990s super saloon up for sale for eye-watering seven-figure price Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) A BEEFY super saloon that once belonged to Noel Gallagher has recently hit the market - for a supersonic sum of £1.2million. A gorgeous Bentley Turbo R was listed on Auto Trader, having once been the pride of joy of the Don't Look Back in Anger singer. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 3 Despite never passing his driving test, Noel Gallagher's former Bentley Turbo R, complete with Britpop flair, is now up for grabs Credit: Getty 3 Gallagher's luxurious super saloon boasts a powerful 6.8-litre V8 engine and can be yours for a staggering £1.2million Credit: Auto Trader 3 Once owned by the Oasis frontman, this stylish Bentley boasts cream leather interiors, wood trims and the iconic 'OASI6 2' number plate Credit: Getty The four-door saloon, which was first registered in 1997, was owned by Gallagher despite the fact he couldn't drive it. The Turbo R - with the 'R" standing for "roadholding" - boasts a 6.8-litre V8 engine and is good for 0-60mph under seven seconds, as well as a top speed of 143mph. Not only built for speed, the Bentley boasts all the trimmings you'd expect from a luxury set of wheels of its time - featuring a cream leather interior, complemented by a wood trim. Described as being in both "excellent condition" and "surprisingly reliable", the Turbo R has clocked some 100,000 miles in its 28-year life. The snazzy motor also has the number plate 'OASI6 2', in reference to the Britpop band, which is set to reunite to play a run of gigs this year in the UK and Ireland. This includes shows at Manchester's Heaton Park, London's Wembley Stadium, and Edinburgh's Murrayfield Stadium, throughout July, August and September. The reunion made history, with more than 10million fans trying to get their hands on the British shows alone. Every performance, including those in the US, South America and Australia, sold out within minutes of going on sale. Famously, the Manchester-born musician has never passed his driving test - but seemingly hasn't stopped him owning or, indeed, driving cars. In 2023, he was handed six penalty points and ordered to pay a court £1,000 for failing to tell police who was driving his Range Rover - which was clocked speeding at 41mph on a 30mph stretch of the A40 in Edgware Road, West London. Noel Gallagher looks stony-faced as he makes lonely Tube journey to Oasis rehearsals – but Liam's entrance is chaotic Speaking about the Bentley's sale, Erin Baker, editorial director at Auto Trader, said: 'Cars listed by music legends don't come around very often, and Noel Gallagher's Bentley Turbo R is certainly one for the Auto Trader history books." Auto Trader's Catherine King recently spoke to Sun Motors with advice on the best second-hand convertibles drivers can pick up at a pinch in time for the summer sun. Naturally, their picks included the evergreen Mazda MX-5 - dubbed the poster child for convertible cars.

Lisa Kudrow says her Friends character Phoebe ‘was so far from who I am'
US actress Lisa Kudrow has said it was 'a lot of work' playing her Friends character Phoebe Buffay as she 'was so far from who I was as a human being'. The 61-year-old from Los Angeles played one of six friends featured in the hit US sitcom which also starred Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Matt Le Blanc and the late Matthew Perry. Advertisement Speaking to US actress Parker Posey for Variety's Actors On Actors series, she said: 'It (the series) was fun the whole time, because we had fun, the cast had fun. 'It was like a collaboration with the writers, because they were so great and nice and good. 'But me being Phoebe was so far from who I was as a human being that it was work. 'I needed to justify everything she was saying in my head so that it felt like she meant it and it was real to her. It was a lot of work. Advertisement 'And I remember like season two or three, and I was just doing it, and went, 'Oh my god, I'm not doing the work. I don't know if this is going as well. I'm not doing the work'. 'I was really fretting over it. And (Matt) LeBlanc went, 'What's the matter with you?'. I said, 'I'm not doing the work that I did. I used to like really work, and he said, 'You're her. You don't have to do it anymore'.' Alongside her role in Friends, Kudrow is known for starring in a number of TV series as well as comedy films Romy and Michele's High School Reunion and The Opposite Of Sex. In 2023 she thanked her late co-star Perry for 'the best 10 years a person gets to have' while filming Friends in a tribute following his death at the age of 54. Advertisement During their conversation, Posey, who has starred in films including Dazed And Confused and Superman Returns, spoke about one of her more recent roles playing a southern woman called Victoria Ratliff in season three of Mike White's dark comedy, The White Lotus. She said: 'It was such a gift to have this middle-aged woman at this time in my life, in my career, to be the southern woman. 'I was reading Tennessee Williams in junior high and high school and southern writers and all of this. So I was like, I just ate it up.'

Love Island star has flirty link to Justin Bieber and Gary Lineker's son
EXCLUSIVE: Helena Ford is set to make her Love Island debut when the new series starts on June 9 and the Londoner is already well connected in the world of showbiz Love Island's latest series is already heating up and it hasn't even started yet as the line up includes a footballer's son, someone whose mum owns a sex shop, a former fire breather and now someone who Justin Bieber follows. Helena Ford is bringing more than just stunning looks and cabin crew charm to the villa. The 29-year-old Londoner is already well connected in celebrity circles, counting Zara McDermott, Justin Bieber, and the sons of British TV royalty among her friends. And as she gears up to find love under the Spanish sun, she's not ruling anything out - even sex on national television. Helena, who previously worked as a flight attendant before entering the villa, is no stranger to the jet-set lifestyle. But her social circle might come as a surprise to some. In an exclusive interview ahead of her casting her sights on some guys under the Mallorcan sun, she opened up about her links to Love Island alumni, pop royalty, and the children of some of the UK's biggest media names. 'I know Zara [McDermott] through one of my best friends who managed her after she left Love Island,' Helena revealed. 'I didn't actually speak to her before going in — she's super busy filming documentaries at the moment.' Despite the lack of last-minute advice from Zara, Helena's no stranger to reality TV culture. She's also familiar with some famous faces off-screen, including the sons of Piers Morgan and Gary Lineker. 'I haven't actually told them!' she laughed. 'So they'll find out with everyone else. I imagine their reaction will be positive, though.' As for how she met them? 'Just nights out in London,' Helena explained casually — proving that the capital's social scene can bring together just about anyone. Perhaps the most surprising revelation? Helena is followed by none other than Justin Bieber. 'He does! It's from an old account I had when I was like 12,' she admitted. 'I used to post about him constantly [on X], total Belieber.' Now, Helena's stepping into the spotlight in her own right as one of the standout contestants on Love Island 2025, Series 12. This season, Love Island is lifting its five-year ban on airing intimate scenes, including those in the villa's Hideaway. Executive producer Mike Spencer confirmed that such footage will be broadcast to keep the show "fresh and exciting" in its 10th year. It's a controversial move, but Helena's taking a measured approach. When asked about potentially having sex on the show, she admitted it's something she has discussed with family. 'Yes – especially my mum,' she said. 'She's clued up and said she'd just leave the room or put the TV on mute. I don't know if I'd do it, but never say never.' Helena's honest, laid-back attitude is already making her a fan favourite. With her girl-next-door energy mixed with an enviable A-list social circle, she could be one to watch this season. Describing herself as, 'definitely a lover girl,' Helena says she's finally ready for a boyfriend. This isn't Helena's first or second brush with Love Island fame either - she first applied at 19, a decade ago. 'I only had one audition and didn't get through. Definitely for the best,' she admits. 'I wasn't ready back then.' Now, at 29, she's confident it's finally her moment. A whole host of new singles have been chosen to go into the villa to try and find love while also navigating the twists and turns of the show. The series will be filmed in its usual Majorcan villa but it has been given a spruce up since last year. Love Island returns Monday, June 9 at 9pm on ITV2 and ITVX.
