DJI Osmo Mobile 7 review: entry-level gimbal punches well above its weight
I reviewed the simpler and lighter DJI Osmo Mobile 7 which costs just €99 and offers effective and reliable stabilisation along with accurate subject tracking from the firm's latest ActiveTrack 7.0 software when using the DJI Mimo app.
While many smartphone gimbals can be geared toward enthusiasts or semi-pro users, DJI OM7 is designed to be a true entry-level option but one that doesn't feel basic. It offers heaps of functionality and capability to enable beginners to elevate their mobile video shooting game.
The main difference with the DJI Osmo Mobile 7P is the lack of an extension rod with added tilt. There is also no Multifunctional Module but you can buy this for DJI OM7 as an optional accessory.

The Osmo Mobile 7 gimbal is super light at 300g, including the built-in tripod and magnetic phone clamp, and is comfortable to hold and use. It has three-axis stabilisation and a built-in tripod. It feels robust in the hand and when unfolding or folding. You attach your phone using the included magnetic metal clamp. It's a secure grip. I've been using these gimbals for years and no phone has ever fallen out. The gimbal can support a smartphone up to 300g in weight.
Osmo Mobile 7 employs Quick Launch so it automatically powers on when you unfold the arm in the direction of the control panel. And unlike its predecessor, when powering down there is no need to remove the magnetic clamp.
The buttons and joystick have a reassuring tactile feel, while the helpful new small screen displays Bluetooth status, battery level and shooting modes.
If this is your first DJI gimbal purchase, you may need to view some of the firm's excellent in-app tutorials but for everyone else the controls are as easy and intuitive to operate as you'd expect. What's in the Osmo Mobile 7 box (Image: DJI)
The DJI Mimo app makes capturing great footage with clever effects simple and fun, even if you have only limited experience making videos. You don't need the app to operate the gimbal, incidentally, but you won't get the full range of shooting functionality without it. Pairing your phone is quick and easy and you are ready to shoot almost instantly.
Some of the features to check out are automated shooting modes such as dynamic zoom and Parents & Kids. Sleep mode is activated by tapping the M button three times and once enabled it means you can wake the device with any button press for instant video capture.
ActiveTrack 7.0 is fast, intelligent and accurate, locking on to subjects quickly even when they are far away, move quickly or are briefly obstructed and focussing rarely loses its subject. Tracking is consistently smooth and stable, whatever the shooting mode.
DJI's one-tap editing feature is as simple as selecting your clips and choosing a recommended template. The app will then automatically analyse and produce a slickly edited video with transitions, text overlay and music within minutes. This is ideal for beginners and enables quick and casual content sharing. DJI Osmo Mobile 7 other features The gimbal enables you to take selfie footage using your phone's superior rear cameras (Image: DJI)
Battery life on the Osmo Mobile 7 is rated at 10 hours. The unit comes bundled with a charging cable so you can give it a quick power boost from your phone if required. The unit fully recharges in about 2.5 hours with a 10W USB-C charger.
The built-in tripod has a metal hinge at the joint that means you should not have to worry about its durability.
I also tested the multifunction module accessory that can be purchased separately for Osmo Mobile 7 as part of the DJI OM 7 Series Tracking Kit. It enables even more smart capture features such as intelligent tracking in third-party apps and it includes automatic long-range DJI Mic Mini reception and a useful built-in fill light.
The fill light offers a brightness of 40 lux (at 0.6 metres) and colour temperatures between 2,500K and 6,000K. I'm going to review the DJI Mic Mini separately as it's such a fantastic piece of kit. DJI Osmo Mobile 7 verdict
Even without using the latest DJI microphone and the Tracking Kit, DJI Osmo Mobile 7 is an easy to recommend tool that offers plenty of tricks to both pro videographers and casual users like me who just want to enhance their video footage without having to think about it too much. It delivers plenty of bang for your buck in terms of features and ease of use. DJI Osmo Mobile 7 pr icing and availability
DJI Osmo Mobile 7 costs €99 from DJI. DJI OM 7 Series Tracking Kit costs €49. DJI Osmo Mobile 7P costs €159 (and includes extendable rod, built-in multifunction module and handy side wheel to control dial for zoom, focus and the fill light). You can also buy Osmo Mobile 7 from Amazon.

I tested HoverAir X1 ProMax drone - the world's first 8K flying selfie camera
I've been testing out HoverAir X1 ProMax, another compact foldable lightweight selfie drone that features built-in propeller guards for safety and which takes off and lands from the palm of your hand. It's a big step up from the standard HoverAir X1 that was first released in 2023 and was the first drone smart and reliable enough to act as a hand-launched selfie drone that could capture video without the need to carry a controller. It was so successful it prompted leading drone firm DJI to introduce the Neo as competition. HoverAir X1 ProMax has since entered the fray to offer significant upgrades in video resolution, flight time and tracking speed. READ MORE: DJI Mic Mini review: is this the best compact wireless microphone set-up for most people? READ MORE: Redmagic Astra gaming tablet review: ultra-portable Android device is a powerhouse for gamers ProMax can fly for an additional five minutes, which is 16 minutes in total. The faster tracking speeds are up to 59kmph (compared to 24kmph). HoverAir ProMax also comes with an extra rear-facing obstacle avoidance sensor and longer Wi-Fi range. HoverAir X1 ProMax can fit easily into your pocket (Image: HoverAir) It's built to be a flying camera that you can fit easily into your pocket or bag and take anywhere to record hikes, cycles or ski runs, for example, and there are two bundles with extra accessories targeting cyclists and skiers especially. The HoverAir ProMax can shoot 8K resolution video at 30 frames per second (fps) compared to the X1's 4K. Footage can also be captured in 4K or 1080p resolution at up to 120 fps for smooth 4X slow-motion playback, while you can capture still images in either 12 MP or 48 MP resolution. The pocketable and foldable design of the X1 has been refined to accommodate the more powerful camera - it feels more robustly made and looks more aerodynamic. HoverAir X1 ProMax in everyday use HoverAir X1 Air ProMax can reliably and accurately auto-track its subject, from the front, rear or side (Image: Joel Ducrot / HoverAir) Using this flying camera is a joy and so simple. Power it up with a long press, tap left or right to select the selfie mode you want and then short press again to initiate the flight. The HoverAir X1 Air ProMax will reliably and accurately auto-track its subject, a feature that works superbly if you are cycling in a particularly scenic area, for example. It can follow you from behind, fly backwards in front of you or side track you. You can also capture orbit shots, where it flies around you at a specific distance, or bird's eye view shots where it flies straight up above you. And when you are done, stick your hand out underneath the drone and it will land there. Press the button to power down and it's ready to fold and put back into your bag or pocket. There's an accompanying smartphone app that gives you manual control over the drone (using virtual joysticks), while the new controller beacon accessory with its OLED display means X1 ProMax can now compete against the likes of DJI Mini 4 Pro while retaining the brand's impressive powerful one-touch selfie capabilities. (There are a range of accessories and bundle options this time around.) The 1,920mAh power pack lasts for about 16 minutes of flight time, and you get a spare battery in the box which is handy. HoverAir X1 ProMax video capture Optional HoverAir X1 Air ProMax accessories include this Beacon controller and bike mount (Image: Joel Ducrot / HoverAir) HoverAir X1 ProMax uses a similar sized CMOS sensor to action cameras such as Insta360 Ace Pro 2 - it is 1/1.3in and capable of shooting in 8K just like the Ace Pro 2 with a 160Mbps bitrate that captures a lot of detail. However, while the high resolution is nice to have, you will get superb footage shooting in 4K resolution at 60fps. The drone can also shoot natively in social-media-friendly vertical format at up to 4K/30fps. Footage is sharp and smooth. Image stabilisation is courtesy of a blend of electronic image stabilisation and a 2-axis mechanical gimbal. You can buy a set of ND (neutral density) filters that clip over the lens for bright conditions, which means you can keep shutter speeds down for smoother movement. You can transfer your clips and photos quickly to your smartphone using Wi-Fi 6. There is 64GB of built-in storage space along with support for microSD cards up to 1TB in capacity. HoverAir X1 ProMax verdict Overall, image and video quality on HoverAir X1 ProMax is perfect for sharing on social media. This is the ultimate selfie drone for elevating your content to the next level. It's especially useful for cyclists who go on solo runs and want to capture the action. HoverAir X1 ProMax pricing and availability HoverAir X1 ProMax costs from €759 from There is also a less expensive HoverAir X1 Pro that shoots in 4K/60fps with 32GB of storage for €549. The drones come with free shipping and a two-year warranty. You can also buy the HoverAir X1 ProMax from Amazon. DJI Mic Mini review: is this the best compact wireless microphone set-up?
I recently reviewed the entry-level DJI Osmo Mobile 7 smartphone gimbal which I tested alongside the firm's entry-level Mic Mini. It impressed me so much it deserved a review of its own. If you engage in any sort of content creation, the decent quality audio recording you get from DJI Mic Mini will enhance all your videos. It's also so portable, discrete and versatile that you can use it to boost how you sound on everything from voice notes to zoom video calls. READ MORE: DJI Osmo Mobile 7 review: entry-level gimbal punches well above its weight in features and functionality READ MORE: I've tested DJI Mini 4 Pro and it's a solid ultra-portable drone for both beginners and pros DJI Mic Mini everyday use The Mic Mini receiver attaches to your camera using a cold shoe mount (Image: DJI) DJI Mic Mini has a similar dual-transmitter and all-in-one charging case design to the more expensive DJI Mic 2. As well as the two compact transmitters and case, you get a receiver, a pair of wind-shields, a soft carrying bag, an extra set of wind-shields, a 3.5mm audio cable and a USB-A to USB-C cable. The transmitters feature omnidirectional microphones and have a handy magnet attachment for attaching neatly to a shirt or jacket. An Auto Limiting feature automatically prevents your audio from clipping. The receiver offers a cold shoe mount and 3.5 audio jack for use with a camera and a USB-C adaptor for use with a phone. It looks like an imperfect fit on any phone but slots in nicely on cameras. Mic Mini receiver attached to a smartphone (Image: DJI) But as the transmitters can connect to your phone directly through Bluetooth, you don't need to use the receiver with your handset. The Bluetooth connection works seamlessly with the DJI Mimo app, third-party video apps and DJI Osmo gizmos such as the gimbal or the excellent Pocket 3 camera. Mic Mini gives you manual plus or minus 12db audio level control and enables you to capture excellent quality audio with a minimum of fuss. The quality difference in audio recorded on a phone's microphones and Mic Mini is massive. I have used it now for a couple of months and found it to be consistently reliable. I've experienced no glitches. Coverage is rated at up to 400m and its noise-cancelling holds its own in both busy and windy environments. There's also a handy Auto Limiting feature that automatically prevents your audio from clipping. DJI Mic Mini other features The compact DJI Mic Mini charging case (Image: DJI) The 48-hour battery life is superb and means you can wear it all day every day at work if you wish. One thing to note is that unlike on the more expensive DJI Mic 2, the Mic Mini transmitters do not have any internal recording so you essentially have no back-up audio. DJI Mic Mini verdict The portability of the package means DJI Mic Mini can be taken anywhere and the ease of use means you can be up and running quickly no matter what set-up you are using. Audio quality is superb for the price point. It's a package that delivers great value for money. Pricing and availability DJI Mic Mini (2TX + 1RX + charging case) costs €169 from but it's currently reduced to €127. There are several purchasing options: individual components, one mic and receiver (currently €67) or the complete kit we reviewed which contains two mics (with magnets), one receiver, a charging case and wind muffs for the mics. You can also buy DJI Mic Mini from Amazon which is offering 25 percent off at the time of publication. Other products in the same category include Maono Wave T5 Wireless Microphone Combo which costs €109 on Amazon reduced from €145 (at time of publication).
