Euro 2025: Wales feels call of history to beat England and eliminate defending champ

ST. GALLEN, Switzerland (AP) — In a game of soccer or any sport, Wales always wants to beat England.
At the Women's European Championship on Sunday, Wales can eliminate the defending champion English just with a draw in the final round of Group D games. Group leader France plays the third-placed Netherlands at the same time.
'As a Welsh woman, do you want to knock England out? Of course you do,' captain Angharad James said on Saturday. 'It's in our blood, it's in our DNA.
'There's no hiding behind the history of Wales versus England, whatever sport you are playing in. It's a rivalry match.'
Wales, like all of England's neighbors in the United Kingdom, takes extra satisfaction in those sporting victories, with its longest tradition being in men's rugby.
It makes sense to Wales coach Rhian Wilkinson, a former Canada international player whose mother is Welsh.
'As a Canadian next to the U.S. I can understand big rivalries,' Wilkinson said. 'This will only benefit the women's game.'
France tops the group with six points, England and the Netherlands have three and Wales is on zero after back-to-back big losses.
Wales has never beaten England in 10 previous meetings and has only the longest of shots to finish second in the standings with a first victory on Sunday. Its more likely role is blocking England's path to the quarterfinals.
England can rise above France and finish top, yet also could secure second place — and a quarterfinal against Sweden — with a win, draw or even a loss.
'My women,' Wales coach Wilkinson said, 'get to show up and spoil the party and that's a wonderful job to have.'
Welsh hearts and souls will be on display when its anthem is sung rousingly before kickoff in the stadium at St. Gallen, though England defender Alex Greenwood said her own team and fans should not be underestimated.
'If you want to speak about passion I think the English are very, very passionate people,' Greenwood said. 'The atmosphere is going to be great and something we should all look forward to.'

Group that owns Burnley in England also taking over Spanish club Espanyol

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) — English-based group Velocity Sport Limited and its American shareholders are taking over Spanish club Espanyol. The club said Monday that its current owners, Chinese group Rastar reached an agreement with VSL to join the holding company and 'participate in a strategic alliance that will position RCD Espanyol at the same level" as Premier League club Burnley, which is also part of the group. Advertisement 'With this deal, Espanyol and the English club will be part of this investment group, which expands its interests by having a club in La Liga and another in the Premier League, although each will remain independent,' Espanyol said in a statement. 'This business integration formula allows for the coexistence of two historic clubs that will operate independently, although they will be supported by the same financial group,' Espanyol said. Espanyol said the agreement is 'pending officialization and completion until all administrative procedures are formalised.' The club said Rastar 'is not disassociating itself from Espanyol, but rather its shares will become part of this new investment vehicle that will have stakes in both clubs.' Advertisement Espanyol said that with this "step forward, Rastar underlines a firm conviction that this integration into the VSL group will strengthen both the economic and sporting structure" of the club. Espanyol, which was twice relegated in the decade or so under Rastar, finished 14th in the league's standings last season. The club's fans had been showing their disappointment with Rastar owner Chen Yansheng for years. Financial details were not released by the club. ___ AP soccer:

Edmonton Oilers announce coaching roster changes

Edmonton Oilers head coach Kris Knoblauch will have some new faces with him behind the bench next season. In a Monday morning release, the club named a trio of new coaches to the staff: Paul McFarland, Peter Aubry and Conor Allen. McFarland joins the Oilers after a season as the Calgary Hitmen's bench boss. This marks a return to the NHL after working as an assistant for three seasons with the Seattle Kraken, following stints with the Florida Panthers and Toronto Maple Leafs. Aubry is the new goaltending coach, taking over for Dustin Schwartz, whose contract was not extended. Most recently, he was an associate coach for Nebraska-Omaha in the NCAA, as well as a developmental goaltending coach for the Chicago Blackhawks. Allen joins the Oilers as the team's skills coach. Previously, he was with the U.S. U17 team, and worked in a skill development role with the USHL's Sioux City Musketeers. Assistant coach Mark Stuart and video coach Noah Segall have been given contract extensions. Paul Coffey, who has worked with the team's defence corps, will return to his prior role as a special advisor to ownership and hockey operations. Glen Gulutzan, who spearheaded the Oilers' dominant power play, has signed on as head coach of the Dallas Stars. Kris Knoblauch will be speaking with the media later Monday morning.
