Special air quality statement issued for Toronto as wildfire smoke drifts in
Wildfire smoke from the Prairies is drifting towards the Greater Toronto Area, prompting Environment Canada to issue a special air quality statement.
The national weather agency said the smoke is expected to spread south into southern Ontario this afternoon and evening, which would cause poor air quality and reduced visibility.
'The wildfire smoke may persist for much of the weekend for parts of southern Ontario,' Environment Canada said in its advisory.
'Air quality and visibility due to wildfire smoke can fluctuate over short distances and can vary considerably from hour to hour.'
The national weather agency is advising the public to limit time outdoors until the statement is lifted. Smoke can cause mild and common symptoms such as eye, nose, and throat irritation, headaches or mild cough.
After a break from the extreme heat, Toronto will see a high of 30 C on Sunday with a humidex of 35. It will be sunny with increasing cloudiness early in the afternoon.
Similar conditions are expected on Civic Holiday Monday.

New evacuation alert issued for Wesley Ridge wildfire on Vancouver Island
Social Sharing The Regional District of Nanaimo has issued a new evacuation alert for properties near the Wesley Ridge wildfire on Vancouver Island. The latest alert, which adds to an existing one and means residents are expected to be ready to leave at a moment's notice, affects addresses on three roads in the area. The Wesley Ridge fire was discovered Thursday, according to the B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS), and is burning on the north banks of Cameron Lake, about 50 kilometres northwest of Nanaimo, B.C. The regional district said it would update the public with the new number of affected properties in a news conference before noon on Tuesday. On Monday, the district said 387 properties were affected by an evacuation order, which requires residents to leave immediately. Another 235 properties, not including the new alert issued late Monday, were affected by an evacuation alert. According to the last update from the wildfire service on Monday morning, the Wesley Ridge fire remained at 511 hectares in size. Rory Colwell, fire behaviour analyst with BCWS, said in a communications video Monday that the area shows evidence of drought. He said the "build up index" of fuels that are available to burn is about 150 per cent of what would be normal at this time of year. "You can see how dry and crunchy the ground is," Colwell said. "Some of the logs … are showing as low as 10 or 12 per cent moisture content — and kiln-dry lumber is about eight per cent." "We're getting full consumption of this, and it's causing the fuels and the fire to spread in areas and in ways that we wouldn't normally see." At a news conference Monday, fire information officer Madison Dahl stressed the need for rain. "We are not having soaring temperatures, and we are expecting a little bit of precipitation, but we are still seeing very dry conditions here on the coast and on Vancouver Island," she said. "It is going to take a lot of rain to be able to substantially lower the fire behaviour that we are seeing." Dahl also said BCWS aircraft need space to safely and quickly collect water to fight the fire, and asked boaters to respect that. "If there are aircraft nearby, move to the shore. Stay out of their way," she said. The Wesley Ridge fire is suspected to be human-caused, a categorization given to any wildfire not sparked by lightning.

Halifax Water asks residents to conserve water

Water levels within the HRM supply areas have not been replenished and little rain is in the forecast. 'With no significant precipitation forecasted in the coming weeks, these levels will continue to lower,' a news release from Halifax Water said. Halifax Water is requesting customers who live and work within a building serviced by them follow voluntary water conservation measures until further notice. The conservation measures include: If it's yellow, let it mellow. Shorten your showers. Turn off the tap when not in use. Wash only full loads of laundry and dishes. Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation pauses evacuation as 'favourable winds' keep wildfire at bay
Winds shifting in a positive direction have a northern Manitoba First Nation pausing its wildfire evacuation, meaning nearly a third of the community will stay put for now — though that could change if the outlook worsens again. About 2,500 Nisichawayasihk Cree Nation residents were forced to leave over the weekend as wildfire threatened the only road into the community, located about 600 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg. Others were expecting to leave, but conditions have improved slightly and as a result evacuations have been paused. "We're delaying the evacuation until further notice until we get more updates in terms of what's happening with the fires," NCN Chief Marcel Moody told CBC News on Tuesday. "The winds have shifted in our favour, and hopefully we get rain." Moody said the decision was made late Monday afternoon after a briefing with provincial wildfire officials. The improved situation means the roughly 1,300 people on evacuation alert who remain in NCN can stay for now, said Moody. He said many evacuees are in Winnipeg, where they'll remain for the time being. "Right now the situation is a little bit better than Saturday and that's the reason why we evacuated our people starting Saturday, but the situation has improved but it could get worse very quickly too." "It really depends on what's happening. Hopefully we want to get our people back as soon as possible, but for the most part I think we want to keep them there until we have the situation under control." Manitoba is in the midst of its worst wildfire season in about three decades and remains under a provincewide state of emergency. Manitoba's wildfire services map suggests there are at least two wildfires burning north of Nisichawayasihk, with one having grown to more than 46,000 hectares by Sunday. Wildfires have produced one of the smokiest years on record in many parts of Manitoba. Much of the north and central parts of the province were under air quality warnings on Monday. Moody said there is a fire guard set up in an area near NCN to help stop or slow the fire from creeping closer to the community. "The risk has been minimized I think, but you never know," said Moody. '"It's mostly the smoke that we're concerned about in our community ... We don't know [what] the long-term impacts of smoke is going to be on our people but I imagine it's not very good."
