Lagacherla tribal women tie rakhis on KTR
Tribal women from Lagacherla village in Kodangal constituency tied rakhis on BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao here on Friday, on the eve of Raksha Bandhan, for standing beside them like their brother when the government had forcibly acquired their land and sent their husbands to jail. A group of tribal women came to Hyderabad on Friday and tied rakhis on the BRS leader. One of the women, Jyothi, who was pregnant at the time of their struggle against 'forcible' acquisition of land by the government, said that the BRS leader had come to their rescue like a brother and named her son Bhoomi Nayak. KTR was a god-send brother to them though they did not share blood, Ms. Jyothi said. The women from Rotibanda thanda of Lagacherla village went to KTR's residence here and said that it was due to his efforts highlighting the issue at the national level, including holding a protest in New Delhi and meeting the National Human Rights Commission, that the State Government was forced to step back on forcible land acquisition. Besides, BRS had also extended legal support to get the men of Lagacherla, jailed in the matter, freed.

Uttar Pradesh CM releases book on Kakori Train Action centenary
Lucknow: Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday joined the Kakori Train Action centenary celebrations and paid tributes to the revolutionaries who laid down their lives for India's freedom. The Chief Minister, taking part in the closing ceremony of centenary celebrations in Lucknow, laid wreath at the statue of martyrs and urged the young generation to embrace patriotism and also take pledge to prioritise Swadeshi over foreign goods. 'Swadeshi should be the aim and mantra of our lives. We will live for Swadeshi and die for our country. When India advances with this spirit of patriotism, no power in the world can harm us," Yogi Adityanath said. He saluted the martyrs of the Kakori train action, planted a Peepal tree at the venue, and also participated in Raksha Bandhan celebration by getting rakhis tied by young girls, to whom he gifted sweets and chocolates. He also clicked photographs and selfies at the museum, honored the families of martyred soldiers on stage, and released a book based on the historic Kakori incident. The program featured cultural performances by the Culture Department, including a dramatic portrayal of the Kakori train action. Later, addressing the function, the Chief Minister recollected the courage of the revolutionaries who, on August 9, 1925, seized the British government's treasury in Kakori, fuelling a strong wave of freedom struggle. The Chief Minister described the centenary celebration as a momentous occasion to honor their legacy, urging every citizen to remember and express gratitude to those who made the ultimate sacrifice for India's independence a century ago. Honoring the families of revolutionaries and brave soldiers associated with the Kakori movement, CM Yogi Adityanath said: 'We must respect every soldier and karmveer who safeguards the nation.' He announced that the world-famous mangoes of Malihabad, Lucknow, will now be branded under the name Kakori and exported globally, both as a tribute to the revolutionaries and as a means to boost regional development." Further, echoing the call of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he urged that the tricolor be hoisted atop every home and that Tiranga Yatras be organised in every village, municipal body, and ward. 'This will embody the true spirit of our Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav,' he said. The Chief Minister emphasised that the national flag should fly proudly over every household and that through the Tiranga Yatra, we must carry forward the message of national unity, defeating every divisive agenda. 'If we move ahead with this determination, this Independence Day celebration will once again unite every Indian with the soul of the nation,' he remarked.

UK condemns Israel plans to escalate Gaza conflict as ‘wrong'
London, Aug 8 (PTI) British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Friday condemned as 'wrong" Israel's plan to further escalate its offensive in Gaza, calling for a reconsideration of the move that will only bring 'more bloodshed" in the nearly two-year-long conflict. The UK condemnation came as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's security cabinet approved plans to takeover Gaza City in the Palestinian enclave by a majority vote overnight. The Israeli authorities have given five objectives for its actions as disarming Hamas; returning all hostages taken on by the group on October 7, 2023; demilitarising the Gaza Strip; taking security control of the territory; and establishing 'an alternative civil administration that is neither Hamas nor the Palestinian Authority". Hamas has, meanwhile, accused Israel of pursuing 'ethnic cleansing" by expanding the conflict. 'The Israeli government's decision to further escalate its offensive in Gaza is wrong, and we urge it to reconsider immediately. This action will do nothing to bring an end to this conflict or to help secure the release of the hostages. 'It will only bring more bloodshed," Starmer said in a statement released by 10 Downing Street in London. 'Every day the humanitarian crisis in Gaza worsens and hostages taken by Hamas are being held in appalling and inhuman conditions. What we need is a ceasefire, a surge in humanitarian aid, the release of all hostages by Hamas and a negotiated solution. 'Hamas can play no part in the future of Gaza and must leave as well as disarm," he said. Starmer said the UK is working with its allies on a long-term plan to secure peace in the region as part of a two-state solution, and 'ultimately achieve a brighter future for Palestinians and Israelis". 'But without both sides engaging in good faith in negotiations, that prospect is vanishing before our eyes. Our message is clear: a diplomatic solution is possible, but both parties must step away from the path of destruction," he added. His statement follows the UK's announcement last month that it would recognise the state of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September unless Israel moves towards a ceasefire in the conflict in Gaza. 'Our goal remains a safe and secure Israel alongside a viable and sovereign Palestinian state. But right now that goal is under pressure like never before," the UK PM said at the time. UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy's talks with US Vice-President J D Vance at his official country residence of Chevening House in Kent, south-eastern England, on Friday will cover the Israel-Hamas conflict as part of 'shared priorities and the strength of the UK-US relationship". Lammy and Vance agree that Israel must open up aid deliveries in Gaza, but the leaders differ on Israel's military actions and on what pressure it should face.
