Nintendo says sales of its Switch 2 hit a record within four days

NEW YORK (AP) — Nintendo says it sold more than 3.5 million of its new Switch 2 gaming consoles within the first four days since its release — breaking a record for the company. In a Wednesday announcement, Nintendo said that this marks the 'highest global sales level' for any of hardware it's sold within that window of time. The Japanese gaming company officially launched the Switch 2 on June 5. Fans of the console's eight-year-old predecessor have been clamoring for an upgrade for years. Throngs of gamers stood in long lines outside stores for the Switch 2's release around the world last week — less than two months after a chaotic rush for preorders quickly sold out. Nintendo is counting on the Switch 2 to boost sagging sales. And in addition to a larger screen and new games, the console has added social features aimed at luring new players into online gaming. Nintendo has said it expects to sell 15 million Switch 2 consoles for the fiscal year through March 2026. The 3.5 million sold in the first four days includes the Nintendo Switch 2's Mario Kart World Bundle, as well as the Switch 2's Japanese-language and multi-language systems sold in Japan. The Switch 2's baseline price of $449.99 is significantly higher than the original Switch's $299 price tag. While new bells and whistles may account for a sizeable portion of that hike, experts have previously noted that new tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump are also a contributor. Evaluating the impact of these import taxes also led Nintendo to delay its April preorders by several weeks.

Carney and Trump ‘negotiating' towards possible ‘positive' deal: U.S. envoy

Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump are having direct talks toward what could be a new trade deal, the U.S. ambassador to Canada said Wednesday, but quickly added he's 'not confirming or denying' that any agreement is done. 'All the indications are that we could move toward a very positive agreement,' Ambassador Pete Hoekstra said of the negotiations during a fireside chat with Global News' Mercedes Stephenson at the Canadian Club of Ottawa. 'Until a deal is announced, we won't know what's in it and we won't know if it's finalized.' Before sitting down with Stephenson, Hoekstra appeared to confirm a CBC News report that said a working document has been exchanged between Ottawa and Washington outlining the potential deal's terms. The report did not say what those terms were. Yet he later said 'I'm not confirming or denying anything' when pressed on whether the report was accurate. Story continues below advertisement 'You got a prime minister who's negotiating on the best interests of Canada, you've got a president who's negotiating on getting the best deal for the United States of America,' Hoekstra told the crowd. The Globe and Mail was the first to report last week that Carney was engaging in direct behind-the-scenes trade discussions with Trump. After Stephenson said there have been 'extensive talks' between Carney and Trump, Hoekstra jokingly whispered, 'Shh — some people said those were secret.' 'Somebody came back and said those were secret talks, and it's like, I don't know how those would be secret,' he said. 'I'd hate to see if it was wide open and transparent.' Ontario Premier Doug Ford said last Thursday that the two leaders were in 'deep, deep discussions' on trade and were 'working hard around the clock to try to get a deal.' Industry Minister Melanie Joly would not confirm the discussions were taking place when asked by reporters in Ottawa later that same day. 'Guys, do you really think I'll answer that question?' she responded. 'I won't answer that question. We won't negotiate in public and we'll let the prime minister do his work.' Story continues below advertisement She had also said in French that there were 'diplomatic discussions' happening between Carney and Trump, but characterized them as separate from the trade and security negotiations taking place between members of the Trump administration and key Canadian cabinet ministers. GameStop's hardware and accessories unit, which includes both new and pre-owned video games, saw a steep 32 per cent drop in sales during the quarter. Despite the revenue slump, GameStop managed to turn a profit, reporting, in a media statement, net income of US$44.8 million compared to a net loss of US$32.3 million in the same period last year. The company also reported an operating loss of US$10.8 million, which includes US$35.5 million in impairment charges tied to its ongoing international restructuring.
