The minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) stressed that right to freedom of speech is not absolute and is subject to restrictions permitted under Article 10(2)(a) of the Federal Constitution
'In cases of defamation, legal action falls under Section 499 of the Penal Code, and there is no statute of limitations for pursuing criminal charges in such matters,' she said in a written Parliamentary reply.
Besut MP Datuk Che Mohamad Zulkifly Jusoh had asked whether legal action will be taken against the business news publication over its allegations of government interference in MACC's investigation into the former political secretary of the prime minister regarding a share purchase.
Azalina said the investigation papers have been forwarded to the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) for a follow-up.
She then said the government reiterates its commitment to upholding this freedom of speech in line with democratic principles and constitutional values.
In September last year, Bloomberg reported that Anwar had allegedly instructed MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki to investigate his political rivals, including former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin.
The report also claimed that Anwar had directed the MACC not to probe his former aide, Farhash Wafa Salvador Rizal Mubarak, over his purchase of shares in the technology services company HeiTech Padu Bhd, which is said to be involved in the development of a new immigration system valued at RM1 billion.

President Donald Trump and Kim met thrice during the US president's first term, but those interactions failed to convince Kim to curb the development of his nuclear weapons programme. How the Consumer Credit Commission will protect Malaysians from unfair lending practices
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 22 — The Consumer Credit Bill 2025, a landmark piece of legislation aimed at regulating Malaysia's rapidly growing credit services industry, gained passage in the Dewan Rakyat in July and is anticipated to be gazetted before the year's end. The Bill was tabled after years of calls to regulate services like 'buy now, pay later' (BNPL), which have surged in popularity since the Covid-19 pandemic. BNPL transaction volume, for example, quadrupled from RM2.3 billion in the first half of 2023 to RM9.3 billion in just two years, prompting warnings about potential harm to vulnerable consumers and the risk of rising household debt. To oversee the new Consumer Credit Act (CCA), policymakers will establish the Consumer Credit Commission (CCC), expected to be formed once the law takes effect, possibly by January next year. Here's what you need to know about the new regulatory body. What is the Consumer Credit Commission (CCC)? The CCC will be the primary authority responsible for licensing and regulating credit service providers that are currently unregulated. Initially, its mandate will cover six key industries: 'buy now, pay later' providers, factoring companies, leasing companies, impaired loan buyers, debt collection agencies, and debt counselling and management agencies. There are discussions that the CCC could eventually take over regulatory powers for hire purchases, moneylending, and pawnbroking, which are currently overseen by the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry and the Housing and Local Government Ministry. What are its main functions? The CCC's role extends beyond just regulation. Besides ensuring that credit providers comply with the law, the commission will also act as a policy think tank to spur the consumer credit industry's growth. It will have the power to compel industry players to submit data, which will be used to advise the government on national policy related to consumer credit. How will the CCC help consumers? The commission's overarching mandate is consumer protection. It is empowered to receive and investigate complaints and, if necessary, penalise any credit provider found to have breached the 'fair practices' provisions of the CCA. For example, if a BNPL user feels they have been unfairly charged with hidden fees or that the repayment terms are exorbitant, they can file a complaint with the CCC to trigger an investigation. Penalties for violations of the Act can include fines of up to RM5 million or imprisonment. What are the CCC's limitations? For now, the commission's jurisdiction is limited to the six industries mentioned above. This means the CCC is not yet empowered to investigate complaints regarding hire purchases or loan sharks ('Ah Longs'), even if they are related to consumer credit. Complaints about hire purchases and moneylending must still be directed to the respective authorities, at least until a future phase when the CCA is amended to expand the CCC's powers.

No vacancy: Merdeka 2025 turns Putrajaya hotels into hot property
PUTRAJAYA, Aug 22 — Excitement is mounting in Putrajaya ahead of the National Day 2025 parade, with hotels across the federal administrative capital already fully booked as local visitors and corporate groups gather for the celebration at Dataran Putrajaya. Dorsett Putrajaya's Sales and Marketing director Sarina Shariff said the hotel has reached full occupancy for Aug 30 and 31, which coincide with the Merdeka festivities. She attributed the strong demand to the hotel's prime location and the vibrant programme lined up for the long weekend. 'We are fully booked on those dates, mostly by local and corporate guests involved with the contingents, including Radio Televisyen Malaysia (RTM) and other agencies,' she told Bernama recently. To accommodate the surge, Dorsett Putrajaya has rolled out a comprehensive operational plan, including early preparations, revised staff rosters, streamlined check-in procedures and heightened readiness across its food and beverage outlets. Its Marketing Communications assistant manager Rosmarlianamanja Rosli said additional shifts had been introduced to maintain smooth operations. 'We have revised housekeeping schedules and stepped up our crowd management measures to ensure guests' comfort and safety,' she said.
