Missing sailor Angelina Resendiz found dead; another sailor detained
A U.S. Navy sailor who disappeared from her barracks about two weeks ago has been found dead, authorities said Wednesday, and another sailor is currently in pretrial custody in connection with her death.
Angelina Petra Resendiz, 21, vanished from her barracks at a naval base in Norfolk, Virginia, on May 29, according to the Naval Criminal Investigative Service, or NCIS. She was reported missing June 3, and the Virginia State Police subsequently issued a "critically missing adult alert" on behalf of the agency.
The Norfolk Medical Examiner identified her body on Tuesday, after remains were found the day before in a wooded part of the city, a spokesperson for the law enforcement agency said in a statement to CBS News.
Authorities have not released the name of the Navy sailor who is being detained in Resendiz's death. Charges were pending Wednesday, but the agency noted that the sailor would be tried in accordance with the Uniform Code of Military Justice. That set of rules dictates how the military investigates, prosecutes and punishes personnel for a range of crimes. It applies to active-duty members of the military, the National Guard and Reserve, as well as military academy students, according to the Department of Defense.
Resendiz was a culinary specialist assigned to the USS James E. Williams and based at Naval Station Norfolk, according to NCIS and CBS News affiliate WTKR.
"NCIS has worked tirelessly in close coordination with Navy leadership, the Norfolk Police Department, Virginia State Police, Virginia Search and Rescue, and numerous other federal and local law enforcement partners to pursue all leads since learning of Seaman Resendiz' disappearance," the agency said. "NCIS remains committed to uncovering the facts surrounding the tragic death of Seaman Resendiz to ensure accountability and justice."
Esmerelda Castle, Resendiz's mother, criticized the Navy's handling of her daughter's case in a statement this week, WTKR reported.
"[Resendiz's] colleagues, friends, and even authorities knew she was missing, but the response was minimal, and after her friends filed a missing person's report when her commander would not, they showed little compassion or understanding," Castle said in the statement, according to WTKR. "This callousness led to [Resendiz's] death, which cannot be tolerated."

Hit-and-run victim in Norfolk left with serious injuries, driver still at large
NORFOLK, Va. (WAVY) — A man named Owen Simmons was riding his bike from his occupation as a hairstylist when he was hit by a car and seriously injured in Norfolk on Sunday night, according to police. The hit and run happened at the intersection of Granby St and E Princess Anne Rd. The driver took off and is still yet to be found. 10 On Your Side spoke with Simmons' sister Melissa, who said another driver saw her brother on the road after he was struck and called 911. 'His face was all messed up and swollen. He had a seizure, and they said he had flatlined also. It was just really devastating to see him the way that he was,' said Sorey. Sorey said it took nearly 24 hours to discover her brother was in the hospital. She did not find out from authorities, but from coworkers who noticed that Simmons had been absent from work. 'I haven't heard anything from the police. He hadn't shown up to work. Another friend started calling around to the hospital and that's when they found him here at Norfolk Sentara,' said Sorey. 10 On Your Side also spoke with Kimberly Bruce, a family friend who had to find where Simmons was hospitalized. 'He had his wallet on him. So, they knew his address, they knew his name. That's the only reason they could identify who he was. Nobody was notified. I had to find him. I called Sentara Norfolk General. After conversing for a little while, I found out he was there,' said Bruce. Bruce and Sorey are calling on anyone with information to come forward so authorities can find the driver responsible. 'Just please come and say something. Anything. Even if you make an anonymous call, ring camera video, anything you've seen, even if it's a half license plate, come and say something to somebody,' said Bruce. The Norfolk Police Department asks anyone with information in this case to call the Norfolk Crime Line at 1-888-LOCK-U-UP. Simmons will have a long road to recovery. A man has been charged after being accused of killing his fiancee who was pregnant with twins, California officials said. On June 8, Ernie Victor Solis, 40, of Napa was accused of killing his 33-year-old fiancee, Hailey Privett, according to a Facebook post by the district attorney's office and the Press Democrat. She deserves for the world to know the kind of life that was lost.' Solis was charged with 'murder and faces the special allegation of multiple murder,' a charge that can result in life imprisonment without the possibility of parole or the death penalty, officials said. Officials didn't specify how Privett was killed or what led to the attack. 'It just gets into a general conversation,' Jerry said. 'And it's like, 'Oh, have you thought about crypto?''
