Bengaluru stampede: Karnataka increase compensation to Rs 25 lakh for families of those who died
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Saturday announced that the compensation for the families of those who died in the stampede outside Bengaluru's Chinnaswamy Stadium has been increased to Rs 25 lakh from Rs 10 lakh, reported The Indian Express.
Eleven persons were killed and more than 50 others were injured in the stampede that took place on Wednesday at Gate Number 3 of the stadium, where fans had gathered to celebrate Royal Challengers Bengaluru's victory in the Indian Premier League and welcome the team.
On Thursday, Royal Challengers Bengaluru announced Rs 10 lakh compensation for each of the 11 families of those who died. The team also said it was setting up a fund, RCB Cares, to support those injured in the incident.
'The unfortunate incident…has caused a lot of anguish and pain to the RCB family…Our fans will always remain at the heart of everything that we do,' it said in a social media post.
The compensation by the state government is in addition to the cricketing team's announcement.
On Friday, the Karnataka Police arrested Nikhil Sosale, the marketing head of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, along with event management firm DNA Entertainment Networks' Sunil Mathew, Kiran and Sumanth in connection with the stampede.
This came hours after Siddaramaiah said that the state government had ordered the arrest of representatives from the Karnataka State Cricket Association, DNA Entertainment Networks and Royal Challengers Bengaluru for the stampede.
The chief minister also suspended Bengaluru Police Commissioner B Dayananda and several police officers.
Police warned against victory celebration: Report
Hours before the stampede, a senior police officer had flagged concerns pertaining to overcrowding and a shortage of security personnel, reported The Indian Express on Sunday.
'Lakhs of cricket fans are likely to come to Vidhana Soudha,' MN Karibasavana Gowda, the deputy commissioner of police (Vidhana Soudha security), had told G Sathyavathi, the government secretary to the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms, on Wednesday, according to the newspaper.
Gowda added: 'Since there is a shortage of security personnel, making bandobast will be a problem.'

DCP's letter surfaces Siddaramaiah's remarks come even as a letter by DCP (Vidhana Soudha security) to the secretary to the Karnataka government's Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR), surfaced . The letter warned against organising the function hastily, and highlighted that the force did not have an adequate number of personnel to provide security for a ceremony where a large number of people would gather, at short notice. This in response to the DPAR seeking the DCP's opinion on holding the felicitation event on the grand stairs of the Vidhana Soudha to honour the RCB players. "RCB has a fan following across the country. Organising the event in a hurry on the grand stairs of Vidhana Soudha will lead to lakhs of cricket fans arriving there. This will lead to problems in 'bandobast' (arrangement) since there is a shortage of officers/personnel," the DCP's letter read. The officer further said if the event is organised, passes for visitors to Vidhana Soudha should be completely stopped. Also, as there were chances of the secretariat staff getting their family members for the event, he suggested an order aimed at ensuring this doesn't happen. The officer also sought a holiday in the afternoon for secretariat staff to ensure that they too don't come there. The DCP also called for installation of more CCTV cameras in the vicinity of Vidhana Soudha - which is a vital installation - and nearby places in view of the large gatherings expected.

FIR against 6 for offering Eid namaz at power substation in Hapur
Meerut: An FIR was registered against six persons, including Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) members, for allegedly offering Eid namaz at a power substation in Simbhaoli area of Hapur, police said on Sunday. The action comes during a sit-in protest led by BKU at the powerhouse, where farmers are demanding the immediate repair of electricity poles damaged in the recent storm. Protesters also demanded action against an official for demanding a bribe of Rs 40,000 in exchange for approving an electricity connection for a tubewell. On the occasion of Bakrid, some BKU members reportedly offered namaz on the premises of the substation. A video of the act was widely circulated online, following which, junior engineer Rambali Maurya, lodged an FIR at Simbhaoli police station against BKU district president Dinesh Kheda, activists Kunwar Khushnud, Manvvar Ali, Naushad, Faizan Abbasi, and an unidentified person under sections 191 (2) (illegal gathering in a group), 121 (1) obstructing govt work, 351 (2), 351 (3) of the BNS. "An FIR has been registered and further investigation is underway. No arrest has been made so far," said circle officer Varun Mishra. Meanwhile, Maurya added that the ongoing agitation is also linked to an earlier incident involving electricity theft. An inspection was carried out on complaints of electricity theft in Ratupura village and uncovered power theft in nine houses. "An FIR was registered in this matter, and the farmer leaders were pressuring us to withdraw the FIR and began their protests," said Maurya.

B'luru stampede: Minister hands over Rs 25L cheque to victim's kin
Mandya: Mandya district minister N Cheluvarayaswamy on Sunday handed over a cheque for Rs 25 lakh to the next of kin of a youth who was killed in the Bengaluru stampede. He visited Poornachandra's house at Rayasamudra in KR Pete taluk and handed over the compensation cheque to his mother. The youth died during the RCB victory celebration held in Bengaluru. KR Pete MLA HT Manju and deputy commissioner Kumara accompanied the minister. Poornachandra, 28, the only son of Chandru and Kanthamma, was in Bengaluru on June 4 to meet a prospective bride — a visit that ended in unimaginable tragedy. The body was brought back to his hometown in KR Pet in the early hours of June 5, and his final rites were performed at the family's farmland in Rayasamudra village.
