Damietta Alliance begins superstructure works at Tahya Misr 1 container terminal
The Ministry of Transport has announced that Damietta Alliance has commenced superstructure works at the Tahya Misr 1 Container Terminal in Damietta Port. As part of the terminal's development, the facility recently received five state-of-the-art quay cranes dedicated to container handling—the first batch of a total of 12 cranes set to arrive in phases.
Manufactured by the Chinese company HHMC, these advanced quay cranes are among the most sophisticated in the world. They are expected to significantly improve the efficiency and speed of loading and unloading operations, enhancing the terminal's overall performance. Designed to handle large vessels, the cranes feature high lifting capacities, capable of managing containers weighing up to 75 tonnes. They can also reach heights of 57.5 meters from the quay surface, allowing them to handle ultra-large vessels stacking up to 11 containers high. With an extended boom length of 72 meters, these cranes are equipped to operate with the world's widest container ships, the ministry stated.
To ensure operational safety, the cranes are fitted with advanced protection systems, including sensors, cameras, and safety mechanisms, safeguarding both personnel and equipment. Additionally, they are fully integrated with smart port management systems, enabling real-time tracking of operations and seamless coordination across terminal activities. These capabilities will enhance the port's ability to accommodate increasing container volumes, reducing turnaround times and boosting overall logistics efficiency.
The ministry also revealed that 20 electric Rubber-Tired Gantry (RTG) cranes have arrived at the terminal to support container handling in the storage yards, as part of a larger delivery of 40 RTGs. These environmentally friendly electric yard cranes are key components of the ongoing development of Tahya Misr 1, which is being equipped with the latest green technology. This initiative aligns with Egypt's Sustainable Development Vision 2030, aiming to minimize carbon emissions through advanced equipment and operational strategies.
The Tahya Misr 1 Container Terminal is one of the most significant mega projects in Damietta Port. It features a quay length of approximately 1,970 meters, berth depths of 18 meters, and a backyard area spanning around 1 million square meters. Once fully operational, the terminal will have a handling capacity of 3.5 million TEUs. The project is being developed in partnership with Damietta Alliance, a global consortium that includes Eurogate (Germany), Contship (Italy), and the international shipping giant Hapag-Lloyd.
This initiative is part of the Ministry of Transport's broader strategy to attract leading global shipping operators to invest in Egyptian ports and participate in terminal operations. It also supports the ministry's implementation of the Integrated Logistics Corridor (Tanta – Mansoura – Damietta), reinforcing Egypt's position as a regional logistics hub.

Egypt signs 6 agreements to accelerate renewable energy
CAIRO – 15 June 2025: At the Development Finance to Foster Private Sector-Led Growth & Jobs conference, the Egyptian government inked six major agreements with international development partners and private sector players, reinforcing its commitment to sustainable energy and economic growth. A key highlight was the financial closure of the Obelisk Solar Power Plant, a flagship project by Norway's Scatec, featuring 1 gigawatt of solar capacity and 200 megawatt-hours of battery storage. With an investment of $600 million, the project is part of the Ministry of Electricity's emergency energy expansion plan and contributes to the energy pillar of Egypt's NWFE (Nexus of Water, Food, and Energy) program. The conference also saw the signing of a Power Purchase Agreement for the Shadwan Wind Project, another Scatec-led venture located in Ras Shukeir, Gulf of Suez. The project will deliver 900 megawatts of wind energy and bring in approximately $1 billion in direct foreign investment, further supporting Egypt's clean energy agenda under NWFE. In a third major step, the International Finance Corporation (IFC) partnered with AMEA Power of the UAE to finance Egypt's first utility-scale battery energy storage facility, integrated within the Abydos Solar Project, another key NWFE initiative. Beyond energy, agreements were signed to expand private sector support through the Hafiz platform. The Ministry of Planning and Economic Development signed an MoU with the Federation of Egyptian Banks to improve access to financial and technical services for local businesses. Additionally, a €21 million investment grant was signed with the European Investment Bank (EIB) to advance Egypt's Sustainable Green Industries Project. Rounding off the agreements, Minister Rania Al-Mashat signed a cooperation deal with 12 representatives from chambers of commerce, business associations, and the Federation of Egyptian Industries to scale up engagement with Hafiz and strengthen support for entrepreneurs and industrial leaders across Egypt.

El-Sisi, IFC discuss boosting investment flows, financing Egypt private sector
President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) discussed on Sunday boosting investment flows into Egypt and financing the private sector at competitive rates to reduce costs. The president's remarks came during a meeting with IFC Managing Director Makhtar Diop and IFC Vice President Ethiopis Tafara in the presence of Egyptian Minister of Planning Rania Al-Mashat, Presidential Spokesperson Ambassador Mohamed El-Shennawy said. During the meeting, President El-Sisi praised the IFC's cooperation with Egypt over the past years. He also highlighted Egypt's keenness to continue this cooperation, especially amid the current regional circumstances that impose significant challenges on development programmes, El-Shennawy added. Moreover, El-Sisi noted that Egypt is adopting structural and economic policies and reforms that support financial and economic stability. "Egypt targets increasing the private sector's role in economic activity and development and is working to enhance private sector confidence in the economy through various tax and customs incentives," the president stressed. President El-Sisi highlighted the government's initiatives to increase exports, develop productive and service activities, and expand public-private partnership (PPP) projects, the spokesperson noted. According to El-Shennawy, the IFC managing director also affirmed the corporation's commitment to fruitful cooperation with Egypt. He praised the economic reform steps taken by Egypt to enhance investor confidence and the investment climate. Furthermore, Diop affirmed the continuation of joint programmes between the two sides to strengthen cooperation and support the Egyptian economy's competitiveness. The IFC, established in 1956, is the private-sector arm of the World Bank Group. It is tasked with advancing economic development by investing in projects, providing asset management services, and encouraging investments in less developed countries. In 2024, the IFC announced a $150 million commitment to four investment and advisory projects in Egypt, including an advisory programme with Egypt's Universal Healthcare Insurance Authority (UHIA), a local currency swap agreement with Banque Misr, and a $100 million investment in Banque du Caire. The commitment also included an equity investment of up to $30 million and a $20 million co-investment envelope into SPE PEF III, a private equity fund managed by SPE Capital, to support mid-cap companies in Egypt, North Africa, and sub-Saharan Africa. The IFC is also working with the Egyptian government to provide advisory services on introducing public-private partnerships at 11 airports to improve infrastructure, connectivity, and passenger services in the country's airport sector.
