2 arrested in Hong Kong after victims lose HK$10 million in fake-official scams
Superintendent Li Muk-yik said on Saturday that the scammers had asked their accomplices to meet victims in hotels under the guise of conducting investigations and used different excuses to collect money from their targets.
Li said officers arrested the two suspects – a Hongkonger, 19, and a mainland Chinese man, 25 – on Friday and Saturday and were looking for a third involved in the case. The two men are currently being held pending further investigation.
'This operation involved at least seven related scam cases all over Hong Kong, with nearly HK$10 million in funds lost in total,' Li said.
'In these seven cases, the victims were aged between 17 and 71 years, and were scammed by a syndicate and lost a large amount of money.'
The victim with the biggest loss was conned out of more than HK$4.6 million in a few days, he added.
Li said the methods used by the scammers were similar to previous cases, with victims first receiving a phone call.

Hong Kong should ban deepfake porn to protect victims: NGO and lawmakers
Hong Kong should step up victim protection by outlawing deepfake pornographic content, advocates and lawmakers have said, after a university student was accused of using artificial intelligence (AI) to generate explicit images of his classmates. The Education Bureau weighed in on the case on Sunday, saying publicly funded universities had autonomy in how they managed students, while one lawmaker called on authorities to follow South Korea's example by banning the AI-generated pornographic images. The bureau added that students were adults and responsible for their own behaviour. 'They must also abide by the law, uphold positive values, practice good moral behaviour, and become good citizens with both moral integrity and personal qualities,' a bureau spokeswoman said. 'I believe that the university will deal with the incident seriously according to the established mechanism and actively work on students' moral cultivation.' A male law student from the University of Hong Kong (HKU) has been accused of generating pornographic images of dozens of classmates and other women using AI.

Hong Kong police seize HK$22 million of drugs in raid on flat, man arrested
Hong Kong police have seized HK$22 million (US$2.8 million) worth of drugs and arrested a 58-year-old man after raiding an illicit narcotics lab inside a flat in To Kwa Wan. Officers launched an operation on Friday after analysing intelligence and intercepted the suspect. He was found with 335g (11.8 ounces) of crack cocaine on him, Senior Inspector Fung Pak-kin of the Hong Kong Island regional anti-triad unit said on Sunday. The suspect, who claimed to be a businessman, was escorted back to the flat, where police uncovered an additional 8.8kg (19.4lbs) of crack cocaine, 2.1kg of cocaine slabs, and 27.3kg of ketamine, Fung said. Officers also discovered liquid raw materials believed to be used to manufacture the synthetic drug commonly known as 'space oil', as well as various tools for drug production and packaging. The total drug haul weighed about 38.6kg. The suspect was detained for investigation and will appear at Eastern Court on Monday to face charges of drug trafficking and manufacturing. Fung said investigators believed the 400 sq ft flat had been used as a drug lab for more than a year. He said the operation had prevented a substantial quantity of dangerous drugs from entering the local market.
