Inside Bay Area preparations for the 2026 World Cup
Over a million people are expected to descend upon the Bay Area next summer for six FIFA World Cup matches at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, and local officials are at work to ensure everything runs smoothly. Why it matters: The games, which will take place mere months after the Bay Area hosts the Super Bowl, are projected to generate up to $360 million in economic activity across the entire region. State of play: The Bay Area Host Committee (BAHC), an organization first formed ahead of the 2016 Super Bowl, is tasked with overseeing the execution of World Cup events, which will include five group stage matches and one round of 32 knockout match. Their goal is twofold, BAHC president and CEO Zaileen Janmohamed told Axios: Fundraise enough money to cover all expenses, and work with nine counties and over 100 cities to maximize economic impact. Behind the scenes: Officials said in December that the World Cup will cost Santa Clara an estimated $45-50 million. But BAHC is expected to cover those costs, including stadium modifications, security and equipment needs, per an agreement with the city. The 49ers have agreed to backstop funds related to stadium renovations if BAHC is unable to cover all costs. BAHC is also receiving $10 million in state funding for public safety needs. What they're saying:"This is historic and unprecedented, and no one has ever done it before, and therefore there's no template on how to do it," Janmohamed told Axios. "We will be the epicenter of sport." Though she declined to provide a specific target fundraising figure, Janmohamed said, "We have a lot of energy in the marketplace." San José, which borders Santa Clara, is working to raise a few million dollars for concerts, drone shows and watch parties downtown, which will serve as a "centerpiece for the fan experience," Mayor Matt Mahan told Axios. Local officials are also developing a QR code and app to help visitors navigate community events, Mahan said. "We want to build a seamless experience" from San Francisco to South Bay, he added. Charles Lutvak, spokesperson for San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie, did not provide details about the city's World Cup preparations but said they "expect to welcome tens of thousands of fans."

What McLaren CEO Zak Brown Thinks Of FOX Acquiring A Third Of IndyCar
McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown has offered many opinions on what IndyCar owner Roger Penske and Penske Entertainment need to do to increase the footprint of the NTT IndyCar Series. In the past, he has talked about massive investment in promotion and marketing, even the possibility of bringing on an ownership partner to make that happen. On August 31, IndyCar announced that partner as FOX purchased a one-third stake in Penske Entertainment including IndyCar, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, INDY NXT by Firestone and IMS Productions. In addition, FOX Sports media rights partnership with IndyCar and the Indianapolis 500 has been extended. The deal is worth between $125 million to $135 million and gives Penske Entertainment the opportunity to grow and expand IndyCar awareness through additional marketing and promotion. FOX Sports is in its first season as the broadcast partner for the NTT IndyCar Series. Zak Brown Incredibly Impressed In addition to owning the McLaren Racing Formula One team, Brown and McLaren also own the Arrow McLaren IndyCar team featuring drivers Pato O'Ward of Monterrey, Mexico, Christian Lundgaard of Hedensted, Denmark, and Nolan Siegel of Palo Alto, California. Brown has been incredibly impressed with FOX Sports' promotional and marketing efforts regarding IndyCar, especially the enthusiasm of FOX Sports CEO Eric Shanks. 'The news today on FOX's acquisition and investment into the NTT IndyCar Series is very positive for everyone involved,' Brown said after the announcement. 'They believe in the series and its potential, and they've already shown the marketing power they can bring to grow the sport and its exposure to new fans. 'Eric (Shanks) and I have had many conversations on his ideas to broadcast and promote IndyCar, and there will be a lot of exciting things to look forward to. With this new enhanced commitment with FOX, I'm more confident than ever in where the series is heading into 2026 and beyond.' This deal may seem unique because Penske gives up an ownership stake in the company that owns IndyCar, the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indianapolis 500, but he does not give up control. When Liberty Media purchased Formula One in 2017, it acquired ownership control of the international racing series. FOX has a large stake in IndyCar and will be actively involved in helping to grow the series, but the ultimately control remains with Penske. In other sports, Disney's ESPN is involved in discussions with the National Football League involving a 10 percent stake in ESPN, in return for the NFL Network and RedZone Channels, according to numerous media reports. FOX Sports owns the United Football League (UFL) and is involved with the Big Ten, including ownership of the Big Ten Network. Warner Brothers, Discovery has an ownership stake in professional three-on-three women's basketball league, Unrivaled. Although Penske said he wasn't looking for additional capital, FOX's one-year improvement in viewership, including 7.1 million viewers for this year's Indianapolis 500, created interest when he was approached by FOX. With Shanks and FOX providing bold vision, it gives IndyCar an opportunity to work on new events, sponsorship opportunities and increasing on site attendance at race tracks on the schedule. That is exactly what McLaren's Zak Brown has wanted.

Micah Parsons Considering Cowboys Trade Request With Relationship 'Deteriorated'
Everything is just fine in Dallas. Dak Prescott is back from a season-ending hamstring injury, the Cowboys have a new offensive playmaker in wide receiver George Pickens, and Micah Parsons might be plotting to burn down Jerry Jones' mansion. Hyperbole, sure, but the Cowboys' relationship with Parsons – who seeks an extension with his rookie deal expiring after the 2025 NFL season – "has deteriorated to the point" where Parsons "is considering drastic measures, which could include a trade request or even a declaration that he is severing his relationship with the team," according to a Friday morning report from The Athletic. The report also states that the Cowboys believed they were close to a deal with Parsons earlier this year, as he negotiated directly with Jones. That said, Parsons considered those to be loose contract talks and had his agent step in to proceed with such conversations, with Jones then refusing to speak to the star defensive end's agent. The two sides are "far apart" on a deal. Parsons is present in Dallas but not participating in practices. As for potential Parsons contract models, defensive end Myles Garrett (four-year, $160 million deal with the Cleveland Browns) and linebacker T.J. Watt (three-year, $123 million extension with the Pittsburgh Steelers) signed new extensions with their respective teams this offseason that reset the pass-rusher market. Last season, Parsons totaled 12.0 sacks, two forced fumbles and 43 combined tackles in 13 regular-season games; he missed four weeks due to an ankle injury. Parsons ranked fourth among edge defenders with a 91.6 pass-rush grade, sixth with a 90.0 overall grade and 72nd with a 65.5 run-defense grade, according to Pro Football Focus. Parsons, a two-time All-Pro and four-time Pro Bowler, has registered 12-plus sacks in each of his four seasons in the NFL. The Cowboys had two prolonged contract negotiations last offseason with Prescott and wide receiver and four-time Pro Bowler CeeDee Lamb. Dallas ultimately extended Lamb (four-year, $136 million deal) in the week following their 2024 preseason finale and extended Prescott (four-year, $240 million deal) on the morning of Week 1 of the regular season. Dallas opens its 2025 preseason on the road against the Los Angeles Rams on Aug. 9 and opens the regular season on the road against the NFC East-rival and defending Super Bowl-champion Philadelphia Eagles on Sept. 4.
