This Week in Golf: Clutch Pro Tour tees off in UAE as global golf action heats up

Khaleej Times18-03-2025

The Clutch Pro Tour makes its highly anticipated UAE debut this week with the UAE Championship at Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club. Running from Tuesday, March 18 to Thursday, March 20, 2025.
Tthe tournament offers a £50,000 prize fund (approx AED 238,000) and a golden opportunity for the winner who will earn an invite to next month's HotelPlanner Tour event (formerly the Challenge Tour), also in Al Ain.
As a tour aligned with the Emirates Golf Federation (EGF), the Clutch Pro Tour continues to strengthen pathways for rising talent, providing a crucial stepping stone for golfers with big aspirations.
Spotlight on the PGA Tour
Over in the U.S., the PGA Tour heads to Palm Harbor, Florida, for the Valspar Championship at Innisbrook Resort's Copperhead Course.
Quick question - how many of us know what Valspar does as a business?
I'll admit, after years of following this event, I only recently discovered they sell paint. Yes, paint!
Valspar has been the title sponsor since 2013 - 12 years of branding, yet I wonder how many fans truly connect the name to its industry. It raises an interesting point:
How well do title sponsors in golf—and other sports—engage with audiences beyond their core B2B market.
Could they do more? Should tournament promoters and broadcasters help strengthen the connection? Or is it enough for sponsors to focus on their corporate hospitality and programs?
Maybe I'm overthinking it. After all, I'm just a sportswriter, not a sports promoter!
The Calm Before the Storm
This time of year always feels like the calm before the storm in professional golf.
Fields across the main tours might not be at their strongest, but that opens doors for rising players to make a name for themselves. Every tournament is an opportunity - for someone, this could be the week that changes their career.
As journalists, we thrive on these moments. The underdog stories, the breakthrough performances, the struggles and triumphs - all part of the human drama that makes sport so compelling.
And that's why every tournament matters. The next big star could be teeing it up right now, somewhere in golf's global pyramid.
So sit back and enjoy this week's action!

Gulf States Leverage Sports Investments to Expand Global Influence

Gulf nations are intensifying their investments in global sports, strategically deploying sovereign wealth funds to diversify economies and enhance international standing. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates , and Qatar are at the forefront of this movement, each utilising sports as a vehicle for economic diversification and soft power projection. Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund , managing assets exceeding $700 billion, has acquired significant stakes in domestic football clubs, including Al Hilal, Al Nassr, Al Ittihad, and Al Ahli. These acquisitions have facilitated the recruitment of high-profile international players, elevating the Saudi Pro League's global profile. The PIF's influence extends beyond football. In golf, it has backed the LIV Golf series, which merged with the PGA Tour, reshaping the sport's competitive landscape. Additionally, the PIF is among the investors in a proposed $5 billion basketball league spanning Asia and Europe, aiming to rival the NBA by attracting top global talent. ADVERTISEMENT Qatar's sovereign wealth fund, the Qatar Investment Authority , has similarly expanded its sports portfolio. Through Qatar Sports Investments , it owns Paris Saint-Germain and holds stakes in Portuguese club SC Braga and U.S.-based Monumental Sports & Entertainment, encompassing NBA, NHL, and WNBA teams. QSI has also consolidated the World Padel Tour, creating a unified global circuit for the sport. The UAE's investment arm, Mubadala, owns the City Football Group, which includes Manchester City and several other clubs worldwide. Under UAE ownership, Manchester City has achieved significant success, including multiple Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League victory. Beyond club ownership, Gulf nations are investing heavily in hosting international sporting events. Qatar's hosting of the 2022 FIFA World Cup involved over $200 billion in infrastructure development, including new stadiums and transportation networks. Saudi Arabia is set to host the 2034 FIFA World Cup and is developing facilities for the 2029 Asian Winter Games in Neom. The region now hosts four Formula 1 races, with events in Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. These investments are yielding economic benefits. The 2022 World Cup contributed approximately $6 billion to Qatar's economy, while sports tourism in the UAE generates around $500 million annually. Infrastructure developed for these events continues to serve local populations and attract tourists. Gulf nations are also focusing on developing local talent. Qatar's Aspire Academy and Saudi Arabia's Mahd Sports Academy aim to nurture athletes across various disciplines, promoting sports participation and healthy lifestyles. Critics argue that these investments serve to enhance the international image of these nations, diverting attention from domestic issues. However, officials maintain that sports investments are integral to broader economic diversification strategies, reducing reliance on oil revenues and fostering new industries.

Rising stars set to showcase their skills at JAGA International Amateur Open in Al Ain

The Emirates Golf Federation calendar heats up this week with the JAGA International Amateur Open, set to take place from 23–25 May at the scenic Al Ain Equestrian, Shooting & Golf Club. Organized under the banner of the Junior Asian Golf Academy (JAGA), the event is part of a broader vision to nurture the next generation of elite golfers in the Middle East and Asia-Pacific region. Branded as "The Future of Junior Golf," the JAGA International Series – Order of Merit is more than just a tournament—it's a pathway for rising stars to develop their skills and gain global exposure. Though this particular event is not part of the Emirates Golf Federation's Order of Merit, it is sanctioned by the World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) and will feature top amateur golfers—both men and women.- from the UAE and beyond. With valuable ranking points at stake, a competitive and talented field is expected to take to the Al Ain greens. The tournament will be played over three shotgun rounds, with starts scheduled for 8:00 AM on May 23, 2:00 PM on May 24, and 7:30 AM on May 25. The Al Ain course will offer a stern yet rewarding test, with its strategic layout, desert surroundings, and pristine playing conditions. The JAGA program, which began in September 2024 and concludes in June 2025, blends elite golf training with hybrid academic learning. This flexible structure supports student-athletes who travel frequently for tournaments while offering a wide choice of curricula. Graduates are well-positioned to pursue their ambitions across the NCAA, Europe, Canada and Australia or other internationally ranked education systems. With just three days before the first tee-off, the anticipation is building for a showcase of emerging talent and a weekend of high-calibre amateur golf.
