While some of the fairs may include rides and games, food, entertainment, and competitions, many of them, much like the state fair, are centered around agriculture. 'Most of our county fairs started with an agricultural emphasis so that people could really take and showcase the agricultural side of things,' said Tom Dean, Southwest District department head for the Cooperative Extension Service. 'And that's why we've got the livestock shows; to be able to showcase livestock and the breeding, the genetics, and increasing those viabilities on our livestock side.'
Many of the fairs are organized not only to show off the best livestock, homemade crafts and food, but also to educate others about agriculture. Educational outreach at the fairs can be seen through the 4-H youth development program and the FFA, which encourage kids to get involved in agriculture.
'Agricultural education for the general community is really something that, when we look at the state fair, it's something that's needed with our society. We have more and more people that are being removed from our agricultural lands. And so, they're living in cities. And so, knowing that aspect of where their food comes from and how things get to the end of that process is a pretty important factor,' Dean explained.

Whether people attend fairs to show off their livestock, learn about agriculture, or to be entertained by music, dancing, rides, games, or food, at the center of all the fairs, no matter how big or small, is community and providing an opportunity to socialize.
'But also, it is a pretty good economic driver, bringing folks in, using hotels and other things,' Dean explained.

The Texas House is set to reconvene Friday as Democrats continue standoff, head to California ahead of redistricting hearing

After the Texas House failed to make a quorum on Tuesday, Texas Democrats were told to return to Austin by Friday or face consequences. The Democratic lawmakers spent the week in Illinois, New York and Massachusetts. On Friday, they are expected to meet with Gov. Gavin Newsom in California. The Texas House reconvened Tuesday afternoon in Austin after Democratic lawmakers fled the state in an effort to block a redistricting vote. Democratic lawmakers were not in attendance, making it the second day in a row the House didn't meet a quorum. The House is going to meet again on Friday in an attempt to make a quorum. Texas House Speaker Dustin Burrows has since suspended direct deposits for lawmakers who left the state, intensifying pressure to restore quorum during the special session. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton shared a stern warning aimed at the House Democrats if they don't return to the Capitol by Friday: "The people of Texas elected lawmakers, not jet-setting runaways looking for headlines. If you don't show up to work, you get fired." Paxton has also launched an investigation into the Texas Majority Project PAC, a group founded by former staffers of Beto O'Rourke and reportedly funded by billionaire George Soros, over allegations of illegal support for Democratic lawmakers who left Texas to block Republican-backed redistricting legislation. He announced the investigation just one day after launching a separate probe into Powered by People, a PAC founded by O'Rourke himself. Texas Gov. Greg Abbott on Monday ordered the civil arrest of Democratic lawmakers who fled the state. By Wednesday, Sen. John Cornyn said that FBI Director Kash Patel responded to his request to assist state and local law enforcement in "locating the runaway Texas House Democrats and investigate potential offenses." Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in Chicago area Friday to discuss ICE arrests

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is in the Chicago area on Friday to discuss expanding detention spaces. Noem also plans to discuss their arrests of what she calls the "worst of the worst criminal illegal aliens." Noem's office will also talk about state partnerships with immigration and customs enforcement to expand detention facilities. Her visit comes just days after the Trump administration announced plans to build a new immigration detention center in Indiana, already nicknamed the "Speedway Slammer." Noem said Indiana would add 1,000 detention beds for immigrants facing deportation under a revived federal program. ICE deportations could ramp up significantly in the next six months, since the agency just received major funding through Trump's own "Big Beautiful Bill," including $45 billion to build more detention facilities and $30 billion to fund the deportation process. A recent CBS News poll shows that the president's deportation effort has lost the majority of support it once had, with a growing number of Americans expressing concern about immigration authorities not focusing on arresting and deporting dangerous criminals, from 53% in June to now 44%. Noem's visit to the Chicago area kicks off at 10 a.m.
