WATCH: Durban North resident shapes bodyboarding journey

The Citizen12-07-2025
DURBAN North resident Mika Justino has been competing at national bodyboarding championships since the age of 11.
His progression in the sport has seen him reach many milestones, including starting his own business, MStar Distribution.
This year, the 18-year-old can add another accolade to his career after being named vice-captain of the eThekwini Bodyboarding Association (EBA) for the second time.
Alongside captain Chris Green, he is part of a team of 21 riders that will compete at the SA Bodyboarding Championships later this year in Durban. Mika will compete in the pro division.
'I've been competing in the national championships since 2018 and I've moved up divisions from 'development boys', to 'boys', to 'juniors' and then to 'pro' division. In terms of expectations, I really haven't set myself any goals or put any pressure on myself. My overall goal is to continue to support and inspire the team as best I can. It is my first time being named as a vice-captain so that in itself is a massive honour. On a personal level, I hope to go out there and do my best in the pro division.
'Having a national champs on our doorstep is an incredible opportunity to grow the sport and showcase our skills as a team. I know the conditions in Durban pretty well. I'm not a person that surfs in one place on our coastline, I try surfing as many different breaks as I can. Every place is totally different, which is what makes competing here so interesting,' he said.
While he has a comprehensive knowledge about bodyboarding, a big aspect of the youngster's journey has been starting his own business where he custom shapes bodyboards out of his shop in Glen Anil.
'The Covid-19 pandemic changed everything for me. I was in my first year of high school and after speaking to my parents and acknowledging the risks of Covid we decided that home schooling would be the best option. With that came the decision to start a bodyboarding business at 13. The best way I can describe what I do is that I shape and manufacture custom bodyboards as well as design, source and produce quality, high-performance bodyboarding accessories,' he said.

Centurion's teen combat star fights her way to the top

Centurion's teen combat star fights her way to the top Local martial artist Minette Kruger is proving that grit, resilience, and focus can carry a young athlete from local beginnings to international recognition. The 19-year-old from Highveld, Centurion, is redefining what it means to be a student athlete, balancing an intense training schedule in wrestling and mixed martial arts (MMA) with her academic life. Kruger's journey began far from the mats and cages where she now competes. 'I grew up in Kimberley in the Northern Cape. I moved to Pretoria when I was 17 and was a learner at Hoërskool Waterkloof,' she said. Her sporting path started early with traditional school sports, such as hockey, netball, and dance. But in July 2017, everything changed. 'One of my mother's friends suggested wrestling for my brother, who has ADHD, and I was curious. I attended one class, and that is how I started,' she said. Kruger's introduction to MMA came a few years later during the lockdown. 'During the Covid-19 pandemic, I spent a lot of time on my phone. One day, I saw a post about Conor McGregor and I looked him up. I saw that he did MMA, and I liked it. So I started in 2021.' She began taking wrestling seriously in 2019 and that same year competed at the ISF Combat Games in Budapest, Hungary. In 2022, she advanced in MMA and went on to represent South Africa at the MMA Youth World Championships in Abu Dhabi. Among her proudest achievements is winning bronze in the senior women's 62kg division at the 2024 African Wrestling Championships. 'I was the first woman in eight years to win a medal for South Africa,' she said. Kruger also competed in the Olympic Qualifiers that same year. However, her journey along the way has not been easy. 'Moving so far away from my parents at a young age was hard. 'But what motivated me is that they did it so that I can achieve my dreams in wrestling and MMA,' she added. In 2024, her career was threatened by a serious knee injury. She tore her anterior cruciate ligament during her international tour, which required surgery and a full year of recovery. 'I have been struggling with the injury since 2021, but during my international tour, I tore it completely. I had surgery in May 2024 and had to do rehab. I am still not fully recovered, but I am moving forward,' she said. She credits her biokineticist, Jonathan Lottering, with keeping her mentally strong. 'He helped me through the days I felt off.' Despite her physical challenges, Kruger continues to dream big. 'I want to compete at the 2028 Olympics for wrestling, and I also want to become a professional fighter in the UFC,' she said. Now enrolled at the New Graduate Institute (NGI) in Centurion, Kruger is balancing her studies in sport management with daily rehabilitation, wrestling, and MMA training. 'I have classes during the day, rehab in the afternoon, and then training until eight in the evening. When I get home, I study until late,' she said. 'My qualification has helped me become a better athlete and coach. It teaches me how athletes should behave, how to communicate better with kids when coaching, and helps me understand my body during training.' Kruger's support system plays a major role in her journey. 'My parents and friends have always been there for me. Even when we do not see each other often, I can count on them,' she said. She also honours her late coach, Nico Coetzee, and current mentors Shane and Sloane Goosen of the Centurion Warriors Wrestling Club. Being a role model is a responsibility Kruger embraces. 'It means the world to me that there are girls who look up to me. I want to show the world that a woman can do anything,' she said. She shared some advice for young athletes who also have dreams of making it big one day. 'Even when it looks like your dreams will not come true, keep moving forward. Hard work beats talent when talent does not work hard. Do it tired, do it unmotivated, do it on your worst days, and you will succeed.' NGI spokesperson Timothy Verne said the institution is proud to celebrate Kruger as one of its rising stars. 'Minette is an extraordinarily talented and driven first-year student whose work ethic and dedication to mixed martial arts and her studies are making her stand out in the ring and the classroom,' Verne said. He added that she will proudly represent NGI on the hockey field and make her amateur MMA debut at Versus in November. 'Minette is a true trailblazer, an inspiration, and an example to her peers, embodying what can happen when you work hard and pursue your purpose with passion to create success,' he said. When will Springboks name team to face Wallabies?

After a couple of days off, the Springboks regrouped on Sunday to begin preparing for the back-to-back Test matches against the Wallabies in Johannesburg on Saturday 16 August and Cape Town on 23 August to start the Rugby Championship. There will be great excitement and anticipation for the first team announcement considering that it will provide some genuine insight into the thinking of Rassie Erasmus after plenty of experimenting with selection during the July internationals. Especially after seeing the Wallabies' competitive performances against the British & Irish Lions, Erasmus will surely be planning to bring a number of first-choice players and combinations into the mix for the first Test against Australia. It's expected that the first Springbok team of the Rugby Championship will be named on Tuesday, 12 August, with the exact time still to be confirmed. A recent training camp featured a series of gym and field training sessions, as well as boardroom sessions, and Erasmus said they will delve deeper into the opposition from this week. 'We have laid a good foundation, and next week we will zone more into what we expect from Australia and start developing plans to counter what we expect from them,' he said. 'They showed against the British & Irish Lions what they are capable of, so we need to be ready mentally and physically for what they will throw at us in South Africa.' The matches against Australia will be followed by successive Tests against the All Blacks in Auckland and Wellington (on 6 and 13 September) and Los Pumas in Durban and London (on 27 September and 4 October). 'We had an intense week of conditioning to get the players ready for what will undoubtedly be a challenging Rugby Championship campaign against some of the top teams in the world,' Erasmus added. 'So we are pleased with the strides made and the mind-shift the players made for what will be a completely different contest against Australia, New Zealand, and Argentina. 'We identified a few key areas of our game that we felt we needed to improve on after the Incoming Series, and we incorporated those areas into our training and conditioning blocks this week. 'The teams we will face in the next few months will ask different questions and pose different challenges, so it was important for the group to align on what to expect in the next few weeks, so this camp was vital in ensuring that we prepare adequately for what lies ahead.' Absolutely brilliant: AB de Villiers leads SA to World Championship of Legends title

Former Proteas captain AB de Villiers scored a stunning 120 not out off 60 balls to lead the South African 'champions' team to victory in the World Championship of Legends final in Birmingham, England, yesterday. De Villiers and his team beat the Pakistan champions team of Mohammed Hafeez by nine wickets with 19 balls remaining to lift the trophy at the tournament for the first time. The SA team's captain's score of 120 was his third century in four matches at the tournament. He ended as the competition's leading run scorer with 429 runs. De Villiers' other big scores at the tournament were 63, 116 and 123. De Villiers was given something of a life halfway through his innings when he was 'caught' in the deep, but a TMO overruled the decision, deciding the ball had bounced before the batter was 'caught'. After winning the toss and opting to bat first, Pakistan scored 195/5 runs in their 20 overs. Sharjeel Khan, who scored 76 off 44 balls, was Pakistan's best batter, while Hardus Viljoen and Wayne Parnell got two wickets each for South Africa. Besides De Villiers, JP Duminy (50 not out off 28 balls) also scored well for the South Africans and ensured there were no late jitters. This article first appeared in The Citizen.
