Red Sox unveil pitching plans for suspended game, regularly-scheduled contest

Yahoo6 days ago
BOSTON — The Red Sox don't quite have a make-up doubleheader Wednesday; it's more like a game and two-thirds.
After Tuesday's game with the Cincinnati Reds was halted after three innings because of rain and later suspended, the two clubs will resume play at 2:30 p.m.
Richard Fitts started the original game Tuesday night, but naturally, isn't available for the resumption of the game some 18 or so hours later.
Instead, the Red Sox will have Brayan Bello start the suspended game, with the Sox holding a 2-1 lead. Bello was originally on tap to pitch Wednesday night, but the Sox moved him for the suspended afternoon matchup.
'It just makes sense to pitch Brayan,' said manager Alex Cora. 'Up one, fully-rested, just go.'
Over his last five starts, Bello has given the Sox at least six innings each time and only once has he allowed more than three earned runs.
Meanwhile, the Sox seem to be leaning toward a bullpen game for the nightcap.
'We'll see where we're at at the end of the day,' Cora said. 'There's a good chance it's going to be (Cooper Criswell) for the 27th man. He pitched three days ago. We've got some guys who are rested. It's just a matter of let's see where we are at at the of the game.'
Chances are, Criswell will serve as the bulk guy, providing the majority of innings.

Boston Red Sox reach $130 million extension with star rookie Roman Anthony

The Boston Red Sox reached an agreement to keep one of the top young stars in baseball in town for the foreseeable future. The Red Sox agreed to an eight-year contract extension with 21-year-old outfielder Roman Anthony on Aug. 6, according to USA TODAY Sports' Bob Nightengale. The extension is worth $130 million and will keep Anthony under contract through his age-30 season. The deal includes a club option for the 2034 season and with incentives can max out at $230 million. Anthony will have the opportunity to hit the open market at his age 31 season in 2035, giving him another chance to cash in on a major deal. The Boston Red Sox lock up outfielder Roman Anthony to an eight-year, $130 million contract that begins in 2026. It raises the bar from the 8-year, $111 million contract Corbin Carroll signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks as a rookie in 2023. @JeffPassan on it. Red Sox Make Major Position Change Decision Perhaps With Eye on Postseason

The Boston Red Sox would be in the postseason if the season ended Wednesday, and they're starting to make decisions that can help them gear up for their final stretch before October. David Sandlin is the Red Sox's No. 11 prospect and the team's No. 5 pitching prospect, acquired in the trade that sent John Schreiber to Kansas City. Sandlin was recently promoted to Triple-A and has traditionally been used as a starter. However, despite starting in his Triple-A debut, he is being moved into a relief role, according to the Worcester Telegram and Gazette's Tommy Cassell. FORT MYERS, FLORIDA - MARCH 14: David Sandlin #20 of the Boston Red Sox pitches during an exhibition game against the Minnesota Twins at JetBlue Park at Fenway South on March 14, 2025 in Fort Myers, Florida. More Maddie Malhotra/Boston"Hearing David Sandlin will be used in a relief role with the Worcester Red Sox (he started for the WooSox in his Triple-A debut last week) as a possible way to prepare him for a playoff push with the Boston Red Sox," Cassell wrote on X. Sandlin appeared out of the bullpen on August 5. He gave up two earned runs in 1 1/3 innings of work. Overall, he has a 3.65 ERA on the season. He could be used as a multi-inning guy out of the bullpen down the stretch if the Red Sox like what they see from him in Triple-A. Chris Hatfield confirmed that Sandlin will be in a true relief role, and not piggybacking a starter. His fastball can touch triple digits, and he could be a solid arm for Alex Cora out of the bullpen. The 24-year-old has not made his big league debut yet, and MLB Pipeline lists his ETA as 2026. The Red Sox could give him a chance in September to see if he can provide value in October. More MLB: Yankees' Aaron Boone Offers Odd Explanation for Sticking With Devin Williams in Loss

Scorching Red Sox signing star rookie Roman Anthony to $130 million contract

The Red Sox only needed 46 games to commit nine figures to Roman Anthony. The star rookie agreed to an eight-year, $130 million contract extension that could be worth up to $230 million, The Post's Jon Heyman confirmed. The contract contains a team option and begins next season, and keeps Anthony, 21, under team control through 2034, as first reported by ESPN. Roman Anthony will be in Boston for a long time. Brian Fluharty-Imagn Images The escalators reportedly include where he finishes in this year's AL Rookie of the Year race, and will buy out either three or four years of free agency. Anthony has looked every part of the top prospect status he earned in the minors. The corner outfielder is slashing .283/.400/.828 with two homers and 19 RBIs, amassing 1.8 WAR as assigned by Baseball Reference. He's shown an incredible eye for such a young hitter, walking 26 times in 190 plate appearances. Roman Anthony has a great on-base percentage. AP Anthony's .400 on-base percentage would rank second to just Aaron Judge's .446 mark entering Wednesday if the rookie had enough at-bats to qualify for the batting title. His June promotion has coincided with the Red Sox's rise from afterthoughts to sudden American League contenders. The Red Sox (64-51) sat at 32-35 before he made his debut June 9, and they are 30-16 in the 46 games he's appeared in to grab control of the first AL wild-card spot. Boston is riding a seven-game winning streak entering Wednesday's series finale against the Royals. The Red Sox have been aggressive in locking up their young talent this season, previously securing Kristian Campbell on an eight-year, $60 million deal. Campbell, though, produced just a .664 OPS before being demoted to the minors. He slashed just .223/.319/.345 spanning 67 games and 229 at-bats, while struggling defensively at second base. Boston secured ace Garrett Crochet on a six-year, $170 million contract after acquiring him during the offseason and he's a strong candidate for the AL Cy Young, along with Detroit'sTarik Skubal.
