State overcame hurdles by mopping up tax and non-tax revenues: Balagopal
Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal said here on Tuesday (May 13, 2025) that the total tax and non-tax revenues were expected to cross ₹1 lakh crore at the end of the current fiscal.
The total tax and non-tax revenues increased from ₹54,000 crore in the 2020-21 financial year to ₹95,000 crore this fiscal. 'The tax revenue when the Left Democratic Front (LDF) came to power was ₹47,000 crore. It has now gone up to about ₹81,000 crore,' he said in his inaugural address at the complaint redressal adalat held in the Kalamassery Assembly constituency.
He added that the government did not increase the prices of liquor, despite it being a key revenue source as it might lead to an increase in the use of narcotic substances. The government ensured efficiency across various sectors and it helped overcome the various hurdles, he said.
Mr. Balagopal said Kerala would turn into one of the top attractive job destinations in the country in the next 10 years in view of infrastructure and other development projects initiated by the government.
The Minister said the two installments of social security and welfare fund board pensions would be released after May 20. There would be no going back on welfare pension for the needy as the government was committed to such schemes, he added.
P. Rajeeve, Minister for Industries and MLA representing the Kalamassery constituency, said waste dumps in the municipality were turned into public spaces through the 'waste-free' campaign of the government. Hundreds of job opportunities had been created through the government's 'Knowledge Kerala' project, he added.
Various complaints submitted by the public were taken up at the adalat. The Minister directed the authorities to take immediate action to ensure access to Jessy Scaria, a resident of TOG Pass Road, who alleged that her neighbour had curtailed vehicular access to the nearby renovated municipal road by dumping scrap materials and waste. She also submitted evidence to prove her claim. Over 150 complaints out of the around 200 received were resolved at the adalat. It included issues related to allotment of title deeds, land conversion and ration cards, according to a release.

Satheesan also said those who withheld pensions for six months are now releasing them just before elections and that is the wrong practice Venugopal pointed out. "We will speak out against the govt's attempts to exploit people's misery," he said. Satheesan said he is taking full responsibility for UDF's official stand in Nilambur. "The fight is between UDF and LDF and no one should try to distract voters from that. Not a single UDF vote will go elsewhere. Political and anti-govt votes will go to UDF. Even BJP is not serious about the contest. When the fight is between UDF and LDF, who else will get the anti-government votes? Nilambur voters are politically aware. Our majority will make that clear," he said.

Samagra Shiksha Kerala: State sanctions ₹19.77 cr. for payment of staff salaries
The State government has sanctioned ₹19.77 crore for distributing the salary for staff under Samagra Shiksha Kerala (SSK), a centrally-sponsored scheme. Finance Minister K.N. Balagopal said the State government has advanced the amount in view of the Centre withholding its share, affecting the timely payment of salaries. SSK employs over 6,800 staff. This includes 689 teachers, 1,255 specialist teachers, 2,784 resource teachers, 1,031 cluster coordinators and other staff. The Centre, responsible for 60% of the expenses under the scheme, has withheld its share for the past two years, according to Mr. Balagopal. The arrears have mounted to ₹609 crore, according to Mr. Balagopal. Two instalments from the 2023-24 fiscal are pending. No funds were issued towards the Central share in 2024-25.

Why PV Anvar looms over Congress, LDF in Nilambur bypoll
The forthcoming by-election to the Nilambur assembly constituency in Kerala's Malappuram is generating huge political interest with the entry into the fray of its two-term independent MLA P.V. who had a falling out with the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), after he targeted chief minister Pinrayi Vijayan, is now state convenor of the Trinamool Congress (TMC). He resigned as MLA in January after facing the heat for alleging that additional DGP (director general of police) M.R. Ajithkumar was involved in gold smuggling. Ajithkumar is widely considered as an officer enjoying the trust of the Vijayan Anvar contesting the June 19 bypoll, both the LDF and the Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) are gearing up for the used to be a Congress citadel, with Aryadan Muhammed holding the seat uninterrupted for almost 30 years since 1987. Anvar, backed by the LDF, wrested the constituency in 2016 by 11,500 votes and again in 2021. The Congress has fielded Aryadan Muhammed's son Aryadan Shoukath, who had lost the election in 2016. The LDF nominee is the CPI(M)'s M. Swaraj, a youth leader and native of Nilambur. The BJP has announced advocate Mohan George, a former Kerala Congress (Joseph) leader, as its candidate in continuation of the party's efforts to woo the Christian nomination paper as a TMC nominee was rejected by the returning officer as the party had apparently delayed authorisation. He started his electoral career with the 2011 assembly polls, in which he contested from the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) stronghold of Eranad as an Independent, losing narrowly by 11,246 votes but securing a 41.5 per cent vote contested the Lok Sabha polls in 2014 from Wayanad but failed—a vote share of just 4 per cent. In the 2016 assembly polls, the CPI(M) backed him from Nilambur and again in 2021. Under the LDF banner, he also contested the 2019 Lok Sabha polls from Ponnani as an Independent, losing by over 193,000 was favoured by the CPI(M) as he lent the party political mileage in Malappuram against the IUML. But relations strained after he was denied a ministerial post in the second innings of the Vijayan government. Whether or not he wins, Anvar can arguably determine the outcome of the election since he has a captive vote base of around 25,000 in Nilambur.
