Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], June 7: Bank of Maharashtra, a premier public sector Bank in the country, proudly announces the selection of P. Ananya Sree, an employee of the Bank and member of its Women's Volleyball Team. The Volleyball Federation of India has selected Ananya to represent India in the International event. The AVC Women's Nations Cup 2025 is being held in Vietnam, from 7th to 14th June 25.
Congratulating Ms Ananya on this remarkable achievement, Nidhu Saxena, MD & CEO of the Bank, stated, "We are proud of Ms Ananya Sree's achievement and are delighted with her selection to represent India on the international platform. Her achievement highlights the multifaceted talent within our organisation and brings great honour to the Bank. We wish her all success in the upcoming championships and for her bright sporting career ahead."
Ananya's selection is a testament to her dedication, talent, and sporting excellence. Known for her dynamic presence on the court and consistent performance, she has been an inspiration to her colleagues and a role model for young athletes across the country.
In addition, we are happy to share that from the 70 eligible players shortlisted, two more members of our Women's Volleyball team, Ms Janani Devendran and Ms Mariya Shaibi have also qualified in the top 22 players for the championship.
The bank has taken a significant stride in promoting sports and empowering women by recruiting a dedicated Women's Volleyball Team through a rigorous screening and trial process. A total of 12 meritorious players were inducted into the Bank's workforce on 26th August 24, marking a proud moment for both the Bank and the sporting community. The Bank is committed to nurturing these talented athletes by providing comprehensive support including state-of-art infrastructure, advanced training facilities and support of coaching from the best coaches available in India. This initiative reflects the Bank's vision to encourage sporting excellence and groom players to compete and excel at national and international platforms.

India's poverty rate sees sharp decline, falls to 5.3% in 2022-23
India has emerged as a crucial factor in offsetting a sharp global rise in poverty following the World Bank's announcement of a major revision to the International Poverty Line (IPL). The Bank raised the IPL from USD 2.15 per day (2017 purchasing power parity) to USD 3.00 per day (2021 PPP), a change that would have otherwise increased the global count of extreme poor by 226 million thanks to India's updated consumption data and improved survey methodology, the net global increase stood at 125 million - with India alone accounting for a reduction of 125 million in the revised estimates, a government release citing World Bank data said. The revision to the IPL reflects a combination of global changes, including revised national poverty lines in low-income countries, improved measurement of consumption - particularly food and non-food items - and the adoption of updated 2021 PPP estimates. These changes were introduced to better capture real-world living costs and consumption patterns across countries. India's influence on this global recalibration has been significant. India's latest Household Consumption Expenditure Survey (HCES) employed the Modified Mixed Recall Period (MMRP) method, replacing the outdated Uniform Reference Period (URP). Under MMRP, frequently purchased items are recorded over shorter recall periods, allowing for a more accurate and realistic capture of household methodological shift led to a notable rise in recorded consumption, which in turn contributed to a lower estimate of poverty. For instance, in 2011-12, applying the MMRP method brought India's poverty rate down from 22.9 per cent to 16.22 per cent, even when assessed under the older USD 2.15 poverty the latest 2022–23 data, India's poverty rate stood at 5.25 per cent under the new USD 3.00 threshold, and dropped even further to 2.35 per cent under the previous USD 2.15 Watch

India, Central Asia push for regional connectivity through INSTC
New Delhi [India], June 6 (ANI): At the 4th India-Central Asia Dialogue held in New Delhi on Friday, India and the Foreign Ministers of five Central Asian nations reaffirmed their commitment to deepening cooperation through enhanced connectivity and human resource development through the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and the Chabahar Port, aiming to strengthen trade and economic ties while bypassing certain geographic constraints. The meeting, chaired by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, placed particular focus on the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), the strategic utility of the Chabahar Port, and the expanding role of the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme. The Ministers emphasized the optimum use of the INSTC to boost linkages between India and Central Asia and welcomed Kazakhstan's initiative to develop the eastern branch of the corridor. India reiterated its support for Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan joining the INSTC framework. The statement stressed that all connectivity initiatives should adhere to principles of transparency, broad participation, local priorities, financial sustainability, and respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, read the Joint Statement of the 4th India-Central Asia Dialogue. The potential of the Chabahar Port as a regional trade hub received strong endorsement. The Ministers appreciated the first meeting of the India-Central Asia Joint Working Group on Chabahar Port held in Mumbai in April 2023. India welcomed the interest of Central Asian nations in using the Shahid Beheshti Terminal to facilitate trade with India and beyond. The sides agreed to continue engagement to develop the region's transit potential through streamlined transit procedures and broader adoption of TIR Carnets between India and Central Asia, added the statement. Recognising the importance of financial and banking linkages in facilitating regional trade and connectivity, the Ministers also underlined the need for deeper financial connectivity. This includes the promotion of digital payment systems, enhanced interbank relations, and trade in national currencies. The statement noted interest in establishing a Joint Working Group to explore options to strengthen banking and financial cooperation. On capacity building, the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme was appreciated by the Central Asian Foreign Ministers for its contributions in areas such as Information Technology and communication skills in English. India expressed readiness to expand the scope of the ITEC programme to align with the growing developmental interests of Central Asian countries, added the statement. The 4th Dialogue reflected the continued evolution of the India-Central Asia partnership into one based on practical collaboration, mutual benefit, and shared commitment to sustainable regional growth. The Ministers thanked India for its hospitality and agreed to hold the next edition of the Dialogue in 2026. (ANI)
