Is this robot your future housemate? Tesla's Optimus robot cooks, cleans, and leaves the internet torn between awe and alarm

Economic Times22-05-2025

Tesla's humanoid robot Optimus is turning heads after a new video showed it cooking, cleaning, and handling household chores with surprising finesse.
The future of home help just took a giant humanoid step forward—straight into your kitchen. Tesla's Optimus robot, once dismissed as a dancing novelty, is back with a compelling new demo: cooking dinner, cleaning up, and even vacuuming the floor. The recently released video, captioned 'I'm not just dancing all day, ok,' showcases the android performing multiple domestic tasks with smooth, calculated precision. And yes, it's stirring a pot of food like a true home chef.
Just a week ago, social media users poked fun at Optimus for showing off dance moves that felt more gimmicky than groundbreaking. But this latest reel has flipped the script. In it, Optimus is seen doing household chores—from dumping trash and wiping down a table to carefully tearing off a paper towel sheet. All these tasks, Tesla claims, are learned using natural language instructions. What's more, the robot is reportedly training to mimic human actions by watching everyday internet videos.

According to Milan Kovac, head of the Optimus project, the team has hit a 'significant breakthrough' in training the bot directly from third-person videos found online. That means your robot assistant might soon learn how to make pancakes simply by watching your favorite Sunday brunch vlogger. Kovac suggests this new method could fast-track Optimus's learning curve, allowing it to master tasks without requiring manual programming or teleoperation.
Back in 2021, Elon Musk made big promises when unveiling Optimus—envisioning a robot that could babysit, fetch groceries, and even become your companion. While we aren't quite there yet, this recent display has made that sci-fi scenario feel slightly more plausible. Priced at around $20,000, Optimus won't be entering the average home soon, though Musk has hinted at rental options in the future.
Predictably, Optimus's new skill set has sparked intense reactions online. Some are hailing it as a technological marvel, writing, 'Amazing! Love these updates. Keep them coming.' Others see it as a revolution in robotics and AI, warning competitors: 'Imagine competing with Tesla on both manufacturing and AI—the bot is a race to both.' Yet, a different camp isn't entirely at ease, with one user summing up the sentiment: 'This is exciting and terrifying at the same time.'
Whether Optimus becomes your next sous-chef or sparks a robot uprising remains to be seen. But one thing is clear—Tesla isn't just building cars anymore; it's quietly ushering in a future where your next roommate might be a robot who does the dishes and never complains.

Elon Musk and Donald Trump's big ugly breakup of bromance: From Epstein files to Tesla stock — a timeline

Donald Trump vs Elon Musk: What started as a 'big, beautiful' bromance between US President Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk ended in a public feud that escalated to a point of a possible no return. The very public spat between Donald Trump and Elon Musk reached its peak on Thursday when the Tesla CEO launched a barrage of attacks on the President on social media. Here is everything that happened between Donald Trump and Elon Musk since he left the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Elon Musk last week announced his decision to leave the White House and DOGE, citing that his tenure as a special government employee had come to an end. 'As my scheduled time as a Special Government Employee comes to an end, I would like to thank President @realDonaldTrump for the opportunity to reduce wasteful spending,' he said in a post on X. Days later, Trump announced he would organise a press conference with Elon Musk to bid him farewell. Everything between the duo seemed okay at the time, though Musk had previously criticised Trump's 'Big Beautiful Bill' intended to cut taxes. Trump was full of praise for Musk. He called Musk 'one of the greatest business leaders and innovators the world has ever produced', seemingly downplaying the rift that was already brewing between them with the Tesla CEO being 'disappointed' with the provisions of the bill. The rift between the world's most powerful leader and the world's richest person took a public turn on June 3, with Elon Musk blasting Donald Trump's 'big, beautiful bill' of tax breaks and spending cuts as a 'disgusting abomination'. 'I'm sorry, but I just can't stand it anymore,' Musk posted on X. 'This massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill is a disgusting abomination. Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.' However, Trump did not lash out like he typically does. Trump's silence did not stop Musk from backing off. On Thursday, the spat became very public when the Tesla CEO made a series of posts on X, sharing 2013 posts of the President. 'Without me, Trump would have lost the election, Dems would control the House and the Republicans would be 51-49 in the Senate,' Musk claimed. He continued to make further claims, eventually dropping a bombshell that the Jeffery Epstein files were not released in full because Donald Trump was involved in the case. Eventually, Donald Trump let slip that he was disappointed in his former adviser, prompting Musk to unleash a flood of insults and taunts. Trump could hold back no longer. He posted that Musk had been 'wearing thin,' that he had 'asked him to leave' his administration, that the tech titan had 'gone CRAZY.' After a series of X posts lambasting the President and threatening to decommission a space capsule used to take astronauts and supplies to the International Space Station, Musk agreed that he would not do it. It was unclear how serious Musk's threat was, but several hours later — in a reply to another X user — he said he wouldn't do it. This gave way to some people thinking of a possible truce in sight, with Trump's White House aides reportedly arranging to schedule a call with the POTUS and Tesla CEO on Friday. However, quashing all hopes, a White House official said on Friday that Trump was not interested to talk to Musk, at least today. The White House official, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters that no phone call between Trump and the Tesla CEO was planned for the day. Earlier, a different White House official had said the two were going to talk. Tesla shares rose on Friday, managing to claw back some steep losses from the previous session when it dropped 14 per cent and lost $150 billion in value, the largest single-day decline in the company's history.

The man who has ...: Donald Trump tells reporters when asked when if he will talk to Elon Musk

In a dramatic escalation of tensions, the White House announced Friday (May6) that President Donald Trump has no intention of speaking with billionaire Elon Musk, even may go ahead and sell his Red Tesla that he bought to support Elon Musk in March this year. This comes following a public feud that has rocked both men's spheres of influence. The White House also quashed earlier reports suggesting a reconciliation, signaling a deepening divide between the two titans. The rift, which exploded Thursday (May 5) over Musk's sharp criticism of Trump's proposed 'Big, Beautiful Spending Bill", has sparked significant fallout. Trump's team emphasized that the President is focused on advancing his legislative agenda and has no interest in engaging with the Tesla CEO. 'The President does not intend to speak to Musk today,' a senior White House official told AFP, speaking on condition of anonymity. A second official confirmed Musk had requested a call, but Trump declined. Trump, undeterred by the spat, personally contacted major U.S. broadcast networks to downplay the conflict. In a call to ABC, he referred to Musk as 'the man who has lost his mind' and told CBS his focus remains 'totally' on his Presidency. The public fallout between the world's most powerful leader and its wealthiest individual carries high stakes. Trump risks political backlash, while Musk's companies, heavily reliant on U.S. government contracts , face potential financial repercussions. Tesla's stock plummeted over 14% on Thursday, wiping out approximately $150 billion in market value, though it saw a partial recovery on Friday. AI Masterclass for Students. Elon Musk UNFOLLOWS top Trump ally Stephen Miller, just days after his wife Katie Miller joined him

Amid his ongoing feud with President Donald Trump , Tesla CEO and former DOGE leader Elon Musk has unfollowed one of Trump's top allies – Stephen Miller , the White House deputy chief of staff and his wife, Katie Miller on social media. Katie Miller served as a Special Government Employee with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). Katie – who was working as spokesperson for the task force – left the White House last week to work full-time for Elon Musk, who also stepped down from his advisory role at DOGE earlier this month. According to X influence tracker 'Big Tech Alert', Musk also unfollowed Turning Point USA founder and MAGA loyalist Charlie Kirk. Musk and Stephen Miller have exchanged conversations on X Incidentally, Musk and Stephen Miller – who have interacted publicly on X in the past – recently involved in an online spat after the tech billionaire criticised the 'One Big Beautiful Bill'. The Tesla CEO then said that he was 'disappointed' with the 'One Big Beautiful Bill', claiming it contradicted the budget-cutting goals he pursued during his tenure with DOGE. 'I think a bill can be big or it can be beautiful, but I don't know if it can be both,' he said. 'My personal opinion.' Shortly after Musk's comments about the bill, Stephen Miller took to X (formerly Twitter), writing: 'Under senate budget rules, you cannot cut discretionary spending (only mandatory) in a reconciliation bill,' Miller wrote. 'So DOGE cuts would have to be done through what is known as a rescissions package or an appropriations bill,' he added. He further stated that the bill 'does not fund the departments of government' nor finance federal agencies, pushing back against Musk's claim that it undermined DOGE's mission. Musk-Trump BIG blow up Musk and Trump – once close allies – have recently grown apart after the tech CEO publicly blasted the administration's 'One Big Beautiful Bill', claiming it will usher in 'debt slavery,' lead to 'American bankruptcy,' and reverse the gains made by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) in cutting federal expenditure. Responding to Musk's remarks, Trump said 'I'm very disappointed with Elon. I've helped him a lot. He knew the inner workings of the bill better than anybody sitting here. He had no problem with it. All of a sudden he had a problem & he only developed the problem when he found out we're going to cut EV mandate'. While the tech billionaire claimed that the bill was 'never shown' to him 'even once'. Musk further revealed that the bill was passed in the 'dead of night so fast that almost no one in Congress could even read it!'.
