FLORENCE, Ala. (AP) — Jacari Lane had 19 points and Daniel Ortiz scored 18 to lead North Alabama to a 78-63 victory over Jacksonville on Thursday night in the semifinals of the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament.
The second-seeded Lions (24-9) will play No. 1 seed Lipscomb for the title on Sunday.
Lane also had six assists for the Lions. Ortiz made 4 of 9 attempts from 3-point range. Will Soucie added 12 points.
Robert McCray finished with 19 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Dolphins (19-13). Jakari Spence added 14 points and four steals. Chris Arias had 12 points.
North Alabama took the lead with 11:18 remaining in the first half and did not relinquish it. Taye Fields led the team in scoring with 10 points in the first half to help put them up 35-23 at the break. North Alabama pulled away with a 9-0 run in the second half to extend a nine-point lead to 18 points. Lane led the way with a team-high 14 second-half points.

Four Nittany Lions make preseason All-American teams
In a preseason that has contained the most hype for the Nittany Lions in over two decades, Penn State continues to dominate preseason All-American teams. The AP just released their teams yesterday and Penn State's dominance was almost certainly felt. Four Nittany Lions ultimately ended up landing on their teams, with three first-team selections and one second-team selection. That ties them with Texas for most first-team selections in the country and finally gives them a second-teamer after the same three players had been selected to the first teams of several other publications. The three players in question that again made the first team are defensive tackle and breakout star of last season Zane Durant, offensive lineman Olaivevega Ioane, and star running back Nicholas Singleton. Backfield running mate Kaytron Allen slots into the second team. This marks Durant's fifth preseason All-American team selection across five publications, Ioane's sixth, and Singleton's fifth. This is Allen's second second-team selection, but it is still notable that one of the deepest squads somehow don't have the subsequent depth on All-American preseason teams. Despite some snubs however, the fact that Durant, Ioane, and Singleton have represented the team so strongly must feel good for Penn State fans. Durant had a breakout 2024 that saw him tied for first amongst defensive tackles and sacks with three and third in TFLs with 11. Ioane was an All-Big Ten second team selection last year and helped the Nittany Lions have one of the most efficient offenses in the country, leading the nation in first downs. And people don't have to be told about both Singleton and Allen, as both could be on the precipice of being Nos. 1 and 2, respectively on Penn State's all-time rushing leaders charts. They already are 1 and 2 in terms of returning FBS players, so why not go for a program record and leave a major legacy behind? These preseason All-American selections do bolster their odds. Most importantly, this gives Penn State bragging rights within the conference. In fact, the only other Big Ten squad to even have multiple first-team selections was No. 3 Ohio State, landing both Jeremiah Smith and Caleb Downs on the first team. Not even those selections can slow Penn State's mojo however. Let's see if these selections prove the Associated Press right.

Pivetta strikes out 10 in combined 4-hitter as the Padres beat the Giants 5-1
SAN DIEGO (AP) — Nick Pivetta allowed a leadoff homer by Jung Hoo Lee and then settled down to tie his season high with 10 strikeouts in six innings and lead the San Diego Padres to a 5-1 victory against the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night. The Padres snapped a four-game losing streak and remained two games behind the defending World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. Lee homered to right-center on Pivetta's second pitch. It was his second career leadoff shot and sixth homer of the season. Pivetta (13-4) walked two batters that inning but allowed only three more baserunners, on two hits and a hit batter. He combined on a four-hitter with All-Star relievers Adrian Morejon, Jason Adam and Robert Suarez. Pivetta beat the Giants in consecutive starts, with his most recent outing being an 11-1 win at San Francisco on Aug. 13 during a three-game sweep that helped the Padres take a one-game lead over the Dodgers. The Padres were then swept in a weekend series at Dodger Stadium. The Padres tied it in the bottom of the first when leadoff batter Fernando Tatis Jr. reached on shortstop Christian Koss' throwing error, advanced on Luis Arraez's double and scored on Manny Machado's ground out. The Padres went ahead 3-1 in the fourth when Giants starter Kai-Wei Teng (1-3) had control issues, hitting two batters with pitches to load the bases and then allowing Jose Iglesias' single. Spencer Bivens came on and got a force out before walking Tatis to bring in another run. Key stat Pivetta reached double digits in strikeouts for the 20th time in his career. Up next Giants RHP Landen Roupp (7-6, 3.45) and Padres LHP JP Sears (7-10, 5.12 ERA) are scheduled to start Wednesday night. ___

Lions predicted to move on from former third-round pick in favor of 19-game starter originally appeared on The Sporting News The Lions have already played three preseason games and have one more remaining before kicking off the regular season. Of course, the Lions played in the Hall of Fame Game against the Chargers last month, so those two teams will have one more preseason game than everybody else. This also means the Lions have more chances to evaluate their roster than the other teams. One of the positions that has been exciting to watch is the backup quarterback spot. Entering the offseason, former third-rounder Hendon Hooker was seen as the favorite to land the job. Hooker had an extremely productive college career and was seen as an interesting NFL prospect. However, the Tennessee product suffered a torn ACL during his final collegiate season and didn't see any action in his rookie season as a result. Hooker has since been unable to gain any momentum in the NFL, and now he appears to have fallen behind veteran journeyman Kyle Allen for the QB2 role in 2025. In fact, Dan Campbell even recently confirmed that Allen is leading Hooker as of now. Erik Schlitt and Jeremy Reisman of Pride of Detroit published an updated 53-man roster projection after the third preseason game, and Hooker didn't make the cut. Regarding the backup quarterback spot, Reisman offered the following: Dan Campbell ensured there was no question about who the current leader for the backup job is, but now the question is whether the Lions will keep Hooker around as a third. The best case I can make for it is that he's still on a cost-controlled rookie contract, and I'm not putting further development out of the question. However, this is a championship-level ballclub right now, and roster spots are too valuable. Keeping only two quarterbacks likely means adding one after cutdowns, because Hooker is unlikely to clear waivers. A brand-new practice squad QB is far from ideal, but it's the hand Detroit has been given. As Reisman mentioned, Campbell has made it clear who the favorite to be the backup is, and there's no guarantee the team keeps three passers on the main roster. The Lions are ready to compete, and with one of the deepest rosters in the league, it may not be practical to keep three quarterbacks. However, due to Hooker's college production and relative youth, there is a high chance he would be claimed by another team. Having to find a third quarterback for the practice squad/emergencies wouldn't be ideal, but it may be the most likely scenario. In the Hall of Fame Game, Hooker completed just three of his six pass attempts for 18 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. Hooker didn't have much more success in the second preseason game, finishing with just 38 yards and no touchdowns or interceptions. Finally, against the Dolphins last weekend, Hooker had another bad performance. The quarterback completed six of his 13 passes for just 61 yards with no touchdowns and one interception. It's hard to argue that Hooker deserves the QB2 spot over Allen. Allen has been a journeyman in his career, but he has had good moments and definitely has looked better in recent times.
