The MLS All-Star Game will pit the best players from the MLS and Mexico's Liga MX against each other this Wednesday night. The All-Star Game, which takes place this year in Austin, Texas, marks the first time that global superstar and Inter Miami player Lionel Messi will play for the MLS All-Star team. Wednesday night's game will stream – for free! – on Apple TV+ through MLS Season Pass. 2025 Leagues Cup: Your Cheat Sheet For The MLS And Liga MX Showcase

Like its name suggests, the competition involves multiple leagues. The format is slightly tweaked in its third year, with 18 teams from MLS competing against all 18 Liga MX teams. Here's everything you need to know about the event. The format The competition has been adjusted from a World Cup-style event to a new format that somewhat mirrors the new UEFA Champions League competitive structure. There are two phases, with 36 teams playing in the intial league phase (similar to the UCL's League Phase) followed by eight teams contesting the knockout phase. Each MLS team will play three matches against a Liga MX team and vice versa After all 36 teams have played three intraleague fixtures, the top four teams from each league on total points earned will advance to the quarterfinals. All matches that finish level after 90 minutes will go straight to penalties. Each team will earn three points for a win in normal time, two for win in a shootout win, one for a shootout loss and none for a regulation loss. Both the 18 MLS teams and 18 Liga MX teams have been divided into six, six-team groups, with three from each league in each group. Every match contested will feature an MLS and Liga MX teams from the same group, at the MLS team's home venue. Advancement to the knockout phase will be determined by a single 18-team table each for MLS and Liga MX clubs, without accounting for group alignment. The top four MLS teams and top four Liga MX sides will advance to the quarterfinal fixtures arranged as follows: MLS teams will host all four quarterfinals. Semifinals, the finals and the third-place match will also be played in MLS markets, with the higher seeded MLS team having host priority if the game is between two MLS foes, and a neutral venue announced if the game is between two Liga MX sides. All games not decided after 90 minutes will go straight to penalties, rather than playing 30 minutes of extra time seen in other knockout competitions. The Schedule The group phase will be played in its entirety between Tuesday, July 29 and Thursday, Aug. 7 while both Liga MX and MLS halt domestic play. Both leagues will resume their domestic schedules on the weekend of Aug. 9-10, with the knockout phase to be played on midweek dates as follows: What's at stake There are both financial and competitive motivations for teams participating in Leagues Cup, in addition to the intracontinental bragging rights of lifting a major trophy. Three berths in the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup will be awarded to the competition's top three finishers. The winner will be placed automatically in the round of 16. The second- and third-place finishers will be placed as two of 22 teams competing in the first round. This makes the event similar to two other club events in Concacaf, the Caribbean Cup and the Central American Cup, which each also place three teams in the Champions Cup each year. The amount of prize money at stake for the 2025 competitors isn't available, but we can make some guesses based on previous figures. In 2023, reports suggested the overall purse was around $40 million spread across 47 competing teams, including around $2 million for eventual winners Inter Miami. How to watch Every match of the 2025 Leagues Cup is available with a subscription to Apple TV's MLS Season Pass service, but if you're not a subscriber there are other ways to keep pace with some of the action. According to World Soccer Talk, 12 games will be shown in English on FS1 during the league phase, and seven more will be shown in Spanish on UniMas and TUDN. Maui Invitational 2025: NC State, Texas highlight 8-team men's college basketball field
One of the most iconic multi-team events in men's college basketball now has its field set for the upcoming 2025-26 season. Arizona State, Boise State, NC State, Seton Hall, Texas, USC, Washington State and Chaminade will compete in the 2025 Maui Invitational, the event announced on July 29. The tournament will take place at the Lahaina Civic Center in Lahaina, Hawaii from November 24-26, ending at its usual time right before Thanksgiving. Several of the participants could be significantly better in 2025-26. NC State will be entering its first season under coach Will Wade, who restocked the Wolfpack's roster with one of the top-rated transfer classes in the sport. After two underwhelming seasons under Rodney Terry, Texas hired Sean Miller away from Xavier. USC will be entering its second season under coach Eric Musselman, who signed a top-10 transfer class and a five-star freshman in Alijah Arenas (who will be out six to eight months with a knee injury). Boise State has won 99 games and made three NCAA tournaments over the past four seasons. While the Maui Invitational has long been one of the most popular and prestigious early season tournaments in college basketball, there's an open question of how long it can remain that in the rapidly evolving landscape of college athletics. Last year marked the debut of the Players Era Festival, a Thanksgiving week tournament in Las Vegas that gives each participating team $1 million in name, image and likeness opportunities. This year's field for the 18-team event includes Houston, Kansas, Alabama, Auburn, St. John's, Michigan, Iowa State, Gonzaga and Creighton, among others, all of which are widely projected as top-25 teams entering the season. After his team surprisingly went winless in its three games in the Maui Invitational last year, UConn coach Dan Hurley voiced his frustrations with the event. "I'm not doing another three-game MTE again," Hurley said. "Moving forward, we will only play home-and-homes and single-game events in big-time arenas. I don't think I'll ever do a three-game MTE again." Inter Miami opens 2025 Leagues Cup campaign against Atlas on Wednesday
The 2025 Leagues Cup kicks off Wednesday, and Inter Miami is ready to get to work. A turbulent week saw both Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba pass on their invitations to the exhibition in Austin, triggering an automatic one-game club suspension under MLS rules, which bars players from their next league match if they miss the All-Star Game without prior approval. That sidelined both stars in Saturday's 0-0 draw against FC Cincinnati. The club was reportedly 'extremely upset' by the league's 'draconian' policy. However, they managed to find a silver lining. 'They had some mandatory rest after many consecutive matches, so I think it ended up being a good thing,' Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano said. 'Now, starting this new marathon of games with the Leagues Cup and more MLS matches, they feel refreshed and ready.' Both Messi and Alba were happily back on the pitch during Tuesday's training session, signaling they're ready for the next phase of a demanding summer. Inter Miami now enters the Leagues Cup — a high-stakes tournament featuring all 18 Liga MX clubs and 18 qualifying MLS teams — with plenty to play for. A CONCACAF Champions Cup automatic bid awaits the winner, and with a packed schedule ahead, Miami knows the road will be tough. 'We know this is going to be a very high-level competition,' midfielder Benjamin Cremaschi said. 'We know it will be tough; we know we will have to compete, but we'll take every opportunity to get as far as we can.' Under the tournament's revamped format, Miami will play three group-stage matches against Liga teams Atlas, Necaxa, and Pumas UNAM between Wednesday and August 7. But while it will face Mexican clubs on the pitch, Miami will compete in an MLS-only table, with only the top four MLS clubs across all groups advancing to the knockout stage. 'Tomorrow is going to be very important for us to start this tournament on the right note,' Mascherano said. Should it advance, the team will enter a single-elimination bracket, where matchups are cross-league, seeded by group-stage performance. Helping Miami's push is a major addition: midfielder Rodrigo De Paul joins on a four-year loan-to-buy deal from Atlético Madrid. A key figure on Argentina's national team alongside Messi, De Paul brings fast footwork and a well-established chemistry to the roster. '[Having De Paul] speaks to the level the club is trying to achieve,' midfielder Tadeo Allende said. 'It motivates us to play alongside someone who's won at the highest level and to learn from him.' Mascherano confirmed De Paul has yet to train with the full squad but said he's in 'great shape' and will be available as soon as paperwork clears. First up for Inter Miami: a tough test against Atlas FC on Wednesday night at 7:30. Former Atlanta United manager Gonzalo Pineda now heads Atlas, and he has beaten Miami in two of their past three meetings. Pineda knows what his team is up against, and he's not backing down. 'Inter Miami is a very mature team, and there is an aura surrounding them,' Pineda said. 'To have so many stars on one team is something else, but once the referee blows the whistle, we'll just focus on taking the ball off their feet. Cutting them off is something this team can do very well.' The atmosphere promises to be electric, with thousands of Atlas fans expected to travel from Guadalajara and across the U.S. to Chase Stadium in Fort Lauderdale 'Many of our fans can't make it to Mexico to see us, so we're bringing a little bit of Mexico to them here,' said Atlas captain Aldo Rocha. 'Giving them a win tomorrow would be something special — for them and for us.'
