Girl, 9. dies after incident in Hersheypark's wave pool

UPI4 days ago
July 25 (UPI) -- A 9-year-old girl died after being in distress at Hersheypark's wave pool near Pennsylvania's state capital of Harrisburg.
The incident occurred Thursday at The Boardwalk water park, which also includes slides and a lazy river. The Shore wave pool is 378,000 gallons, the largest in the state, and is up to 6 feet deep.
Hershey Enterainment & Resorts Company didn't give details on what happened.
"From the moment our lifeguard team recognized that a child was in distress, they performed an immediate rescue, followed by continuous, coordinated life-saving efforts by our lifeguards, on-site first responders and medical personnel," CEO John Lawn said in a message.
The girl was taken to Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, "where despite everyone's tireless efforts, the child did not recover," Lawn said. Authorities did not identify her.
In an updated statement Friday, the park said the wave pool within The Boardwalk will remain closed that day "out of respect for the family and deep appreciation of our team members who worked so valiantly in their efforts to save the life of the guest."
Ten lifeguards were dedicated to the wave pool at the time of the incident, the park said. Also, complimentary life vests were available.
On Thursday, Lawn said park employees were investigating the incident.
"The safety of our guests has always been our highest priority," he said. "In the coming days, we will conduct a thorough internal review and cooperate with authorities."
The park was founded by Milton S. Hershey in 1927 "as leisure grounds for employees of Hersehy's Chocolate Factory," according to the park's website.
The 121-acre amusement park includes 15 roller-coasters. It is open from Memorial Day to Labor Day.
"To every family who visits Hersheypark, please know this: your safety and well-being drive each decision we make," Lawn said. "We will thoroughly investigate this tragedy and honor the memory of this young guest by continuing our focus on ensuring the safety of our guests at Hershepark."

Global hunger body says 'worst case' famine scenario emerging in Gaza

Thousands of Palestinians on the move in northern Gaza on Sunday in search of increasingly scarce food as supplies of humanitarian assistance entering the Palestinian territory dwindled to what the United Nations and aid agencies have described as a trickle. Photo by Mahmoud Issa/UPI | License Photo July 29 (UPI) -- The humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza is "the worst-case scenario of famine," amid widespread starvation, malnutrition and disease driving a surge in hunger-related deaths, a global hunger monitoring group said Tuesday. The Integrated Food Security Phase Classification said in a bulletin that the latest food consumption data indicated famine thresholds had been reached in most of Gaza and for acute malnutrition in Gaza City -- but stopped short of issuing a formal famine notice. "The worst-case scenario of famine is currently playing out in the Gaza Strip. Conflict and displacement have intensified, and access to food and other essential items and services has plummeted to unprecedented levels," said IPC, which is backed by the United Nations, European Commission, World Health Organization and global NGO's. The IPC said that since its last analysis in May, access to food across Gaza was now "alarmingly erratic and extremely perilous" due to a "devastating" intensification of bombing and ground operations that had displaced an additional 325,000 people, killed 6,700 people and razed critical infrastructure. The group's Famine Review Committee said that despite the negative impact on the data caused by severely restricted humanitarian access, the evidence clearly showed a sharp jump in the rate of increase in "starvation, malnutrition and mortality." "Many nutritional programs have run out of nutrition supplies and the number of sites able to provide health and nutrition services has greatly decreased. Shipments of medical supplies are also severely constrained, leading to increased human suffering and elevated morbidity. Deprivation of adequate, clean drinkable water is causing extreme suffering and has greatly increased the risk of morbidity and mortality," it said. Between April and the middle of July, more than 20,000 children were hospitalized with acute malnutrition, 3,000 of them severely malnourished, with hospitals reporting a sharp rise in hunger-related illness among under-fives. The committee expressed horror at the deteriorating situation, in particular killings of civilians attempting to access aid, and reiterated its call for the resumption of humanitarian assistance at scale and a cease-fire, warning that failure to act made famine a certainty. "This is not a surprise. This is what we've been seeing for quite some time," CARE Gaza response director Beckie Ryan told NBC News. The IPC alert came as the Hamas-run Health Ministry said the number of Palestinians killed since Israel began its offensive on Gaza in response to the Hamas-led attacks of Oct. 7, 2023, breached the 60,000 mark. Amid mounting international condemnation of the unfolding hunger crisis in Gaza -- and a determination to do something about it -- Israel has instituted a series of "tactical pauses" in military activity to allow aid to be distributed, and on Monday vowed to work with international partners. "Israel will continue to work with international agencies as well as the United States and European nations to ensure that large amounts of humanitarian aid flows into the Gaza Strip," Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said. As recently as Sunday, Netanyahu continued to insist there was no hunger crisis in Gaza. "Israel is presented as though we are applying a campaign of starvation in Gaza. What a bold-faced lie. There is no policy of starvation in Gaza, and there is no starvation in Gaza," he said. In a break that presaged the opening of a gap with Washington, U.S. President Donald Trump said he wasn't convinced by Netanyahu's denials, saying the TV images that he had seen looked like "real starvation," and that the scenes couldn't be "faked." Israel acknowledges it has imposed aid restrictions and replaced much of a decades-old system run by the United Nations and international aid charities with its Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, but says it was necessary to prevent Hamas from stealing aid and reselling it to fund military operations.

Child, 9, dies after incident at Hersheypark Boardwalk, police investigating tragic death

The Hershey Entertainment & Resorts Company reported Thursday evening that a 9-year-old was "tragically lost" at The Boardwalk at Hersheypark. According to officials, the 9-year-old was found by Boardwalk lifeguards at the wave pool within the Boardwalk area. The child was transported to Penn State Health Hershey Medical Center, where officials said the child did not recover. "From the moment our lifeguard team recognized that a child was in distress, they performed an immediate rescue, followed by continuous, coordinated life‑saving efforts by our lifeguards, on‑site first responders, and medical personnel," John Lawn, CEO, Hershey Entertainment & Resorts Company, said in a statement Thursday. The wave pool was closed Friday after the incident. Hershey officials said that there were 10 lifeguards specifically dedicated to the wave pool at the time of the incident. "The specific lifeguards stationed at the wave pool received the highest level of training and certification from E&A, known as Special Facility Training, which includes deep-water lifeguarding, Basic Life Support, AED use, supplemental oxygen support, CPR, and First Aid," officials said in an updated release Friday. "Additionally, as part of Hersheypark's commitment to water safety, complimentary life vests are also available to all of our guests." Officials added there were over 100 Ellis & Associates-trained lifeguards in the Boardwalk area at the time of the incident. The park employs 19 Certified Lifeguard Instructors and one Instructor Trainer to "ensure all team members meet rigorous safety standards." The Derry Township Police Department issued a statement Friday saying they are assisting Hersheypark and the Dauphin County Coroner's Office with their review into the death of the 9-year-old child. The name of that child has not been made public. "We are still on the early stages of this process, and we are working to gather all of the facts in the incident," police said. "Our thoughts and our hearts are with the family and friends of this young life, lost too soon." WGAL reported that a witness, whom the station did not identify, described seeing a child being "pulled, limp, from the wave pool." Hershey Entertainment officials said they will be conducting a "thorough internal review" of the incident in the coming days, and will cooperate fully with authorities. "The safety of our guests has always been our highest priority. In the coming days, we will conduct a thorough internal review and cooperate fully with authorities. "Our hearts break for this child and the child's family. We extend our deepest condolences for their loss. Out of respect for their privacy, we will not release any personal details at this time," Lawn said in his release. This story has been updated with new information. This is an ongoing story.
