FIFA Chief Gianni Infantino Offers Support To England's Jess Carter After Online Racist Abuse

NDTV2 days ago
FIFA president Gianni Infantino offered support to England women's defender Jess Carter, who has been targeted with racist abuse during Euro 2025, saying the global body for the sport "shared data for appropriate action to be taken against any perpetrators". Carter, who has played for England since 2017 and was part of the team that won the Euro in 2022, earlier said that she is stepping away from social media for the duration of the tournament. "From the start of the tournament, I have experienced a lot of racial abuse... I don't agree, or think, it's OK to target someone's appearance or race. As a result of this, I will be taking a step back from social media and leaving it to a team to deal with," she had said.
The Football Association CEO Mark Bullingham had strongly condemned those responsible for racism and said the FA "is in touch with the relevant social media platform and is working with police to ensure those responsible for this hate crime are brought to justice".
Reacting to the matter, FIFA chief said, "I am deeply saddened to see the online abuse directed at England's Jess Carter during the ongoing Women's EURO tournament. There is no place for racism in football or in society."
"We stand with Jess. We stand with every player and every individual who has suffered from racist abuse. No player should be discriminated against in any way, they should be free to be at their very best on the pitch.
"Through FIFA's Social Media Protection Service, we have helped tackle such abuse across multiple tournaments. We will continue to collaborate and support confederations, FIFA Member Associations and their players.
"In this instance, we will be offering our support with any further action required, as well as sharing data for appropriate action to be taken against any perpetrators," Infantino added in a statement.

Alexia Putellas Aims to Shatter Germany Curse At Women's Euro

Last Updated: Spain aims to end their poor record against Germany in the Women's Euro 2025 semi-finals. Alexia Putellas is confident after their 2023 World Cup win. Spain is determined to put an end to their unfortunate past record against Germany when the teams face off in the Women's Euro 2025 semi-finals on Wednesday. Midfield star Alexia Putellas is eager to make more history for the World Cup holders. 'We are really happy to be in this position. We go into the game full of hope and of course with confidence in ourselves," Putellas told reporters in Zurich, ahead of the semi-final clash. After winning the World Cup in 2023, Spain is now aiming to secure their first European Championship title and solidify their status as the leading force in international women's football. While Spain has never claimed the European Championship, Germany boasts a record eight continental titles and dominated women's football in the early 2000s. 'We know Germany are one of the best teams in the world and that it will be very difficult, but we will try to get to our first Euro final first of all — that would be a big success," said Putellas. Spain has never beaten Germany, losing to them in the group stage of the 2019 World Cup and the last Euros in 2022. Germany also triumphed in the bronze medal match at last year's Olympics, but Putellas dismissed the idea of seeking revenge in Wednesday's clash. 'Personally I see it more as an opportunity for us rather than it being about revenge for the Olympics," said the former Ballon d'Or winner. 'The Olympics is a totally different competition. I think we all agree that a Euro or World Cup is a different context altogether so you can't compare them. But yes, we lost against them, and now we have the chance to beat them for the first time." She added: 'We know it will be a very difficult game like any semi-final in a major tournament, but we are fully motivated to keep advancing and make more history." Spain will be without centre-back Laia Aleixandri due to suspension, while Sjoeke Nuesken and Kathrin Hendrich are banned for Germany, with the latter being red-carded in the quarter-final win over France on penalties. Sarai Linder is injured after leaving the field early in that match. 'Everyone knows what Spain is like. We are going to have to run a lot and suffer a lot because they are going to have more of the ball," admitted Germany coach Christian Wueck. Women's Euro 2025: England Reach Final After Dramatic Win Over Italy

Last Updated: England coach Sarina Wiegman felt "many emotions" after her team staged a dramatic 2-1 comeback against Italy in extra time, securing a spot in the Women's Euro 2025 final. England coach Sarina Wiegman expressed she felt 'many emotions" after her team staged another dramatic comeback to defeat Italy in extra time on Tuesday, securing their place in the final of the Women's Euro 2025. 'I have many emotions again. I feel relief, I feel happy — it feels a bit surreal but we are here and we are going to the final," Wiegman said following their 2-1 victory in Geneva, achieved through Chloe Kelly's goal in the 119th minute. Italy were mere seconds away from a stunning victory over the defending champions and a spot in the final, as they led deep into injury time thanks to Barbara Bonansea's 33rd-minute goal. However, substitute Michelle Agyemang equalised for England in the sixth minute of stoppage time, forcing extra time. Kelly, who also came off the bench, then scored the decisive goal after her penalty was initially saved, just as another shoot-out loomed. 'It does feel like a movie. When it finishes like that I am enjoying it but it was a little bit dramatic," Wiegman smiled. Her team had already staged a remarkable comeback against Sweden in the quarter-finals, trailing 2-0 before goals by Lucy Bronze and Agyemang in the space of three minutes late on forced extra time, leading to a victory on penalties. 'We know with the players we have in the squad that we can always score more because we have shown that multiple times," Wiegman added. 'At the end we did it and then we got extra time, and then we got the penalty. We were a bit lucky to score it in the second stage but we are through." A Hat-Trick England, who saw winger Lauren James exit at half-time with an ankle injury, will now head to Basel for the final on Sunday against either Spain or Germany — who meet in their last-four clash on Wednesday. It will be the third consecutive major tournament final for the Lionesses, who beat Germany in extra time in the Euro 2022 final at Wembley but lost to Spain in the deciding game at the following year's World Cup in Sydney. 'That is what happens when a great team comes together and makes things happen — three consecutive finals playing under an unbelievable manager in Sarina," said Kelly, the Arsenal forward who scored the winner in the 2022 Euro final. 'It is incredible to be part of this special team. I am so proud." She added: 'I can't believe what has just happened. The belief in the squad, the resilience and the togetherness in this group is just so special." Meanwhile, Italy coach Andrea Soncin stated he was proud of his team despite the heartbreak of falling just short of reaching their first final since the 1997 Euros. 'It hurts but we are very proud of all that we have done," said Soncin, who took charge of the team in 2023 and is now focusing on the 2027 World Cup. 'The fact we were just a minute away from the final can be encouraging for us. 'We will need a few days to get over this bitter moment but we will keep growing, and our future goal is to go to the World Cup in Brazil so we are already looking forward." AIFF Technical Committee To Shortlist National Team Coach From 170 Applicants

Last Updated: The AIFF's technical committee, led by IM Vijayan, will meet to appoint a new head coach for the senior men's team after Manolo Marquez's exit. The All India Football Federation's (AIFF) technical committee, led by former India captain IM Vijayan, will meet on Wednesday to begin the process of appointing a new head coach for the senior men's national team. The post became vacant earlier this month after the AIFF and Spaniard Manolo Marquez parted ways by mutual consent following a string of poor performances. Selection Process Underway Following the coaching vacancy, the AIFF invited applications with a deadline of July 13. The federation has since received an overwhelming 170 applications from around the globe. According to a source close to the proceedings, the technical committee will evaluate all applications and create a shortlist to be forwarded to the AIFF Executive Committee (EC), which will make the final decision. With a FIFA international window in September and crucial AFC Asian Cup qualifiers against Singapore set for October 9 and 14, the AIFF is under pressure to expedite the appointment. The Executive Committee also has the authority to request additional names or further clarification before making a decision. Several high-profile names have expressed interest in the job. Former Liverpool stars Robbie Fowler—who previously coached East Bengal—and Harry Kewell are among the applicants, as is Peter Segrt, who has managed Tajikistan, Maldives, and Afghanistan. Stephen Constantine, who coached India in two separate stints (2002–2005 and 2015–2019), is also in the fray. Most recently in charge of Pakistan, the 62-year-old has also coached East Bengal and national teams like Nepal, Malawi, and Rwanda. Among Indian contenders are Khalid Jamil, Santosh Kashyap, and Sanjoy Sen—the latter fresh off leading Bengal to a Santosh Trophy win and having won the I-League with Mohun Bagan in 2014–15. Other Notable Applicants Foreign coaches with ISL and I-League experience have also applied, including: Vacancy Opened After Marquez's Exit The AIFF officially opened applications on July 4, two days after accepting Manolo Marquez's resignation during its Executive Committee meeting on July 2. Though Marquez had expressed his desire to step down in April, he was requested to stay on until India's AFC Asian Cup qualifier against Hong Kong on June 10. India lost that match 1-0, concluding Marquez's one-year tenure with a disappointing record—no competitive wins in eight games and just one victory in a friendly. Under his leadership, India also fell to 133rd in the FIFA rankings. (with PTI inputs) First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
