Necaxa coach knows Messi, Inter Miami well
Necaxa, which beat Atlanta United 3-1 in its Leagues Cup opener July 30, is led by new coach Fernando Gago.
Gago was a starter alongside Messi and Mascherano in Argentina's 1-0 win in the Olympic men's soccer final in 2008, and came off the bench in their loss to Germany in the 2014 FIFA Club World Cup final.
'It's always special to face people you know, people you've shared so many good times with,' Mascherano said of Gago. 'And in the end, when the ball starts rolling, I'll try to do everything I can to compete in the best way possible and win so we can still hope to qualify.'

MARLINS: Smokin'-hot Fish go for sweep of Yankees, .500 today: Marlins atop the HB10? A first. But earned. Miami is 54-55, with four straight wins and 24-10 since June 22, after a wild 13-12 home comeback over the Yankees and then Saturday's 2-0 on Eury Perez's gem. Fish go for the sweep of NYY and can reach .500 today. As important, the Fish won this year's trade deadline with restraint. A year ago Miami led the majors in deadline deals as Peter Bendix went crazy in a prospects get. This time only two trades: OF Jesús Sánchez to Houston for starter Ryan Gusto and two prospects, and C Nick Fortes to Tampa Bay for outfielder Matthew Etzel. Gusto is a nice add, but the best deals were the ones not done: Keeping starters Sandy Alcantara and Edward Cabrera despite a market for both. The statement: Marlins are all-in in chase for wild card playoff spot. 2. INTER MIAMI: Despite win, Messi injury clouds hopes of Leagues Cup advance: Inter Miami added midfielder Rodrigo de Paul as a de factor bodyguard for Lionel Messi, but that did not prevent Messi from incurring a thigh injury Saturday and leaving early in a win on penalty kicks over Nexaca in a Leagues Cup match in Fort Lauderdale. The injury is not believed serious but could jeopardize Messi 's availability Wednesday at home vs. Pumas in another Leagues Cup game. Miami is 2-0 in the MLS vs. Mexico tournament but even at 3-0 may be at risk of not advancing due to goal-differential. 3. HEAT: Bad week redefined: Theft scandal, Rozier still on roster: Miami reportedly declined a trade to get Marcus Smart from Washington in exchange for Terry Rozier. Extremely upset were Heat fans, many of whom would gladly trade Rozier for a used pair of Keds. Also this past week: The FBI and U.S. Attorney's Office began an investigation of merchandise theft of items including game-worn jerseys stolen from the Heat's uniform equipment room. NASCAR: As Wallace ends drought, a nod to Wendell Scott: Bubba Wallace's third career win in the NASCAR Cup Series ended a 100-race winless drought for the second Black driver to win a race in the sport's main series. It invites a nod of respect for Wendell Scott, please? Scott in 1963 in Jacksonville became the first Black driver to win on NASCAR's main stage, despite racism at the time that saw him receive death threats, be poisoned once and often wrecked intentionally. He never received the trophy for the one race he won, his family finally was given it in 2021 -- 31 years after his death. Olympic champ Finke slams 'stupid' criticism of US world swim team
Three-time Olympic champion Bobby Finke said Sunday that criticism of the United States swimming squad at the world championships in Singapore was "weak" and "stupid". The US have endured a trying week after officials said that an "overwhelming majority" of the team were struck down by acute gastroenteritis at a pre-championships camp in Thailand. With expectations sky-high back home and Los Angeles hosting the 2028 Olympics, that triggered accusations of poor management in some quarters. Six-time Olympic gold medallist Ryan Lochte on Friday shared an image on Instagram depicting a funeral that featured a tombstone inscribed: "In loving memory of United States Swimming." "They set the bar high -- until they stopped reaching for it," the inscription says, Lochte adding the caption: "Call it a funeral or call it a fresh start. We've got 3 years." Phelps, who counts a stunning 23 gold among his 28 Olympic medals, shared Lochte's post, adding: "Is this the wake-up call USA swimming needed?" Retired swimmer and commentator Rowdy Gaines also weighed in, calling the American swimmers in Singapore "entitled". Finke, the Tokyo and Paris Olympic champion in the 1,500m freestyle, hit back on the final day of the competition in Singapore. "Someone wants to say our swimmers are entitled, that's just the dumbest thing I've personally ever heard," world record holder Finke said after winning bronze in the 1,500m freestyle. "I think that's a weak statement. There's just so much stupid stuff that's getting said," said Finke, who also won the 800m free in Tokyo. "They have zero clue the kind of teamwork we have behind the scenes and how well we're being put together." The Americans finished the competition on top of the medal table with nine golds, one more than second-place Australia. They arrived in Singapore with several young swimmers in their squad and Finke said they "stepped up" and delivered. "You're never going to win with those people," he said of the team's critics. Sha'Carri Richardson Arrested for Domestic Violence at Seattle Airport
Reigning 100-meter world champion Sha'Carri Richardson was arrested last weekend at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport on charges of fourth-degree domestic violence, according to a police report obtained by The Associated Press. Newsweek reached out to Richardson's agent and manager via email on Saturday for comment. The arrest of one of track and field's most prominent figures marks another controversial chapter in Richardson's turbulent career. This incident comes after her previous legal troubles, including a positive marijuana test at the 2021 U.S. Olympic trials that prevented her from competing at the Tokyo Olympics. Richardson's pattern of off-track issues threatens to overshadow her athletic achievements and raises questions about athlete conduct standards. The 25-year-old sprinter was booked into the South Correctional Entity (SCORE) in Des Moines, Washington, at 6:54 p.m. local time Sunday and released Monday at 1:13 p.m. Despite the arrest, Richardson competed Thursday in the opening round of the women's 100 meters at the U.S. track and field championships in Eugene, Oregon. According to the police report, a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) supervisor notified airport officers of a disturbance between Richardson and her boyfriend, fellow sprinter Christian Coleman. Airport surveillance footage reportedly showed Richardson grabbing Coleman's backpack and yanking it away, then appearing to block his path as he attempted to move around her. The report indicates Coleman was shoved into a wall, and Richardson appeared to throw an item—potentially headphones—at Coleman. Coleman, also a world-class sprinter and former world champion, declined to participate further in the investigation and declined to be considered a victim in the case. Richardson's athletic resume includes winning the 100 meters at the 2023 world championships in Budapest, earning silver at the Paris Olympics, and contributing to the U.S. 4x100 relay team's Olympic gold medal. USA Track and Field said in a statement: "USATF is aware of the reports and is not commenting on this matter."
