Romance to ruin: Bengaluru sees spike in dating scams
BENGALURU: Bengaluru is witnessing a surge in online dating scams, with fraudsters exploiting emotionally vulnerable individuals and drawing them into sophisticated financial frauds. What often begins as a search for love ends in heartbreak and financial ruin, as scammers exploit dating platforms to either extort victims or lure them into fraudulent investment schemes. Recently, a 32-year-old software engineer lost Rs 79.3 lakh after investing in a fake trading app, following the advice of a woman he met on a matrimonial website. In another case, a 37-year-old businessman lost Rs 5.5 lakh in a sextortion scam after connecting with a woman on a dating app. A senior officer from the cybercrime police station said dating fraud typically falls into two categories: honey-trap extortion (sextortion) and fraudulent trading schemes that trick victims into transferring money under the guise of investment opportunities. 'These women initiate warm, emotional conversations and gradually build trust,' the officer said. 'Eventually, they promise a future together, often even marriage.' Once the bond is established, often over several months, the victim is persuaded to invest in a fake trading platform. Many share personal financial struggles, including debts and loans, believing they are confiding in a partner. The scammers exploit these vulnerabilities, offering financial solutions that ultimately drain the victim's savings. The officer urged the public to avoid sharing personal or financial details with strangers online and to be cautious of anyone promising quick financial gains.

In major drug bust, cops seize 847 kg ganja worth Rs 4.2 cr, arrest two
Hyderabad: In a meticulously coordinated joint operation, the Cyberabad Narcotic Police Station of the Elite Action Group for Drug Law Enforcement (EAGLE) and the RNCC Khammam team have dismantled a major inter-state ganja trafficking network. The bust resulted in the seizure of 847 kilograms of high-grade ganja, with a street value of over Rs 4.2 crore, and the arrest of two habitual offenders. The operation is one of the largest and most precise anti-drug actions of 2025, targeting a supply corridor that runs from Malkangiri in Odisha to Uttar Pradesh via Telangana and Karnataka. According to police, on 4 August, intelligence reached the EAGLE CNPS and RNCC Khammam teams about a Uttar Pradesh-registered Mahindra Bolero pick-up truck carrying a massive ganja consignment from Odisha. The vehicle was expected to pass through Thondapalli village in Shamshabad, on the Bangalore National Highway, between 3pm and 6pm. By 1pm, a joint RNCC–CNPS team had been deployed with surveillance vehicles, weighing equipment, packing materials, and documentation tools. At 5pm, the suspect vehicle was intercepted near the Jama Masjid on Shamshabad Road. Two individuals were arrested and identified as Khilla Dhana (29) and Rajendar (26), both residents of Malkangiri district, Odisha. During the investigation, a tightly knit trafficking chain was exposed. An absconding individual, Ramesh Sukri, operated as the central coordinator from Malkangiri, linked to both Dhana and Rajendar through their village network. His associate, Jagadish Kuldeep, procured bulk ganja from cultivators like Shibo Shiba and Basu in remote forest areas. The syndicate's main buyer, ShaffiqShafi from Uttar Pradesh, placed large-volume orders and provided advance vehicles with UP registration, while handling payments through couriers or layered transfers to obscure the trail.

NIA court rejects Gautam Navlakha's plea to travel to Delhi for 45 days
MUMBAI: The special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court recently rejected an application filed by Gautam Navlakha, a civil rights activist booked under the draconian Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in the 2018 Bhima Koregaon violence case, seeking permission to travel to and reside in Delhi for 45 days. Navlakha had previously moved an application to reside permanently in Delhi, which was rejected on June 19. Gautam Navlakha (HT Archives) Special judge Chakor Shrikrishna Baviskar, in an order passed on July 30, rejected Navlakha's plea on account of the binding directives of the Bombay High Court. Citing the seriousness of charges levelled against him, the court said his repeated requests to travel to Delhi cannot be justified. Navlakha, represented by advocate Wahab Khan, sought permission to travel to Delhi on several grounds. He wanted to visit his 86-year-old ailing sister and spend time with his partner's daughters and grandchildren, whom he had not seen in over five years. He also had pending medical check-ups and domestic affairs. Additionally, he expressed a desire to explore work opportunities in Mumbai by leveraging his connections in Delhi. The NIA strongly contested the application. Special public prosecutor Prakash Shetty, in his response, argued that the offences against Navlakha were serious and that he has 'international connections.' The prosecution expressed concerns that he 'may misuse liberty,' potentially continuing 'further conspiracy in connection with the present case' while in Delhi. The federal agency also raised the possibility that the accused may tamper with evidence, influence witnesses, or abscond, which could hinder expeditious disposal of the trial. The Bombay High Court granted bail to Navlakha on December 19, 2023, but barred him from leaving the jurisdiction of the trial court without prior permission from the special court. While the special court had previously allowed him to travel to Delhi for two months on November 7, 2024, citing 'genuinely serious' grounds, this did not justify repeated requests on similar grounds, it said. 'It does not mean that, every now and then, the applicant, on the same grounds, for the same reason, should be granted permission,' the order stated. The special judge observed that allowing such requests would contravene the High Court's mandate, which expected Navlakha to remain within the court's territorial jurisdiction except in 'exceptional and extraordinary circumstances.'
