Brothers Andrew and Tristan Tate are charged with several counts of rape, assault and trafficking

LeMonde28-05-2025

Avowed misogynist and social media influencer Andrew Tate and his brother have been charged with several counts of rape, assault and trafficking, UK prosecutors said on Wednesday, May 28. The accusations, which date back to between 2012 to 2015, were authorised by the Crown Prosecution Service in January 2024, but have only been revealed now.
Former kickboxer Tate, 38, faces 10 charges in the UK including rape, actual bodily harm, human trafficking and controlling prostitution relating to three women. His brother, Tristan, 36, has been accused of 11 similar charges against one woman. "A European arrest warrant was issued in England in 2024, and as a result the Romanian courts ordered the extradition to the UK of Andrew and Tristan Tate," prosecutors said in a statement. "However, the domestic criminal matters in Romania must be settled first."
Andrew Tate is facing legal action in several countries, including some cases where he is accused alongside his brother. In Romania, the Tate brothers face separate allegations of trafficking minors, sexual intercourse with a minor and money laundering. Both men, who have dual British-US nationality, have denied all charges against them.
Andrew Tate, the figurehead of the online masculinist movement, traveled to Florida with his brother in February, marking the first time they had left Romania since their 2022 arrest. Romanian prosecutors allege that the brothers and two women set up a criminal organization in Romania in 2021 and sexually exploited several victims.
In a separate civil case in the United Kingdom, four British women have accused Andrew Tate of rape and coercive control. Tate moved to Romania years ago after first starting a webcam business in Britain. He leapt to fame in 2016 when he appeared on the Big Brother UK reality television show, but was removed after a controversial video emerged.
He then turned to social media platforms to promote his often misogynistic and divisive views on how to be successful. Tate is followed by more than 10.7 million people on the social network X, where he shares his angry vision of masculinity and often homophobic and racist posts.

Tense standoff as a town in Northern Ireland braces for a third night of riots

Police were bracing late on Wednesday, June 12, for a third night of violence in a riot-hit town in Northern Ireland as hundreds gathered on the streets armed with molotov cocktails while unrest spread to other areas. Despite calls for calm from across the divided UK province, as dusk fell hundreds of protestors milled in the centre of northern Ballymena in a tense standoff with police armed with riot shields and backed by water cannons. Two nights of intense violence, which has left 32 police officers injured and a trail of burned-out houses and businesses, has been loudly condemned by police as "racist thuggery." Police Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson said he had appealed to police forces in England and Wales to deploy to aid his forces to quell the unrest. Riot police with dogs pushed back protestors who sporadically threw fireworks, masonry and bottles, and two petrol bombs were thrown at a line of armored police landrovers. A leisure center in the town of Larne, some 20 miles Southeast of Ballymena, was set on fire by masked men, local media reported. Some of those who had to be evacuated from Ballymena had been given temporary shelter in the center.. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer earlier Wednesday condemned the violence as "mindless." The riots erupted after the arrest of two teenagers accused of attempting to rape a young girl. The pair appeared in court on Monday where they asked for a Romanian interpreter. "We strongly condemn the racially motivated violence witnessed in recent days and make an urgent appeal for calm across society," ministers from every party in the province's power-sharing executive said Wednesday in a joint statement. Residents had been "terrorised" and police injured, they added, urging people to reject the "divisive agenda being pushed by a "destructive" minority. "There can never be any justification for the violence that has taken place in recent days," said the leaders/ Six people were arrested Tuesday during the second night of riots in Ballymena, around 30 miles Northwest of Belfast, and surrounding places. Police will not confirm the ethnicity of the two teenagers who remain in custody, but areas attacked on Monday and Tuesday included those where Romanian migrants live. Traditional foes such as the republican Sinn Fein and pro-UK Democratic Unionist Party lent their voices to the joint statement calling for calm.

UN launches rescue operation after eight migrants die off Djibouti

The UN migration agency said on Wednesday that eight migrants died and 22 others are missing after they were forced off a boat near the coast of Djibouti. The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) said in a statement the migrants were part of a group of 150 who were forced by smugglers to disembark a boat and swim to shore on 5 June. The migrants were found in the desert by IOM patrol teams and taken to a migrant response centre. The IOM and authorities in Djibouti are continuing with a search and rescue operation to find the missing migrants. "Every life lost at sea is a tragedy that should never happen," Celestine Frantz, the IOM Regional Director for the East, Horn and Southern Africa, said. Frantz said that the migrants were "forced into impossible choices by smugglers who show no regard for human life." Thousands of migrants from African, Middle Eastern and South Asian countries seeking a better life in Europe attempt irregular migration every year. People smugglers pack vessels full of desperate people willing to risk their lives to reach continental Europe. Most of the vessels get migrants across the Red Sea to Gulf countries before they proceed further to European nations. Yemen is a major route for migrants from East Africa and the Horn of Africa trying to reach Gulf countries for work, with hundreds of thousands attempting the route each year. However Frontex, the EU's external border protection agency, reported a 31% drop in illegal migrant crossings in the first quarter of 2025 compared to the same period one year ago. Crossings fell to nearly 33,600 with a decline reported across every single route leading to Europe. A significant drop, around 30%, was observed on the Western African route, which connects Senegal, Mauritania, The Gambia and Western Sahara to Spain's Canary Islands. Similarly, a 29% fall was reported in crossings along the Eastern Mediterranean route, mostly leading to Cyprus, Greece and Bulgaria from Afghanistan, Sudan and Egypt. The third sharpest fall, -26%, was on the Central Mediterranean route, from western and central Africa through Niger and Libya across the Central Mediterranean towards Europe, in particular Italy.

Starmer condemns second night of rioting in Northern Ireland town

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer joined Northern Irish authorities on Wednesday, June 11, in condemning what he called two nights of "mindless" violence targeting foreigners. The unrest that has injured 17 police officers has included rioters throwing petrol bombs, fireworks and bricks, while homes as well as businesses have been attacked. The violence was triggered by the arrest of two teenagers accused of attempting to rape a young girl. The pair appeared in court on Monday where they asked for a Romanian interpreter. "We strongly condemn the racially motivated violence witnessed in recent days and make an urgent appeal for calm across society," said ministers from every party in the UK province's power-sharing executive in a joint statement. Starmer joined them in condemning "mindless attacks." Residents had been "terrorized" and police injured, they added, urging people to reject the "divisive agenda being pushed by a "destructive" minority. Six people were arrested during the second night of riots in the town of Ballymena, around 48 kilometers northwest of Belfast, and other places. "Hate-fuelled acts and mob rule do nothing but tear at the fabric of our society – they resolve nothing and serve no one," said Chief Constable Jon Boutcher. Police will not confirm the ethnicity of the two teenagers who remain in custody, but areas attacked on Monday included those where Romanian migrants live. Four houses were damaged by fire, while rioters smashed windows and doors of homes and businesses. "Police officers came under sustained attack over a number of hours with multiple petrol bombs, heavy masonry, bricks and fireworks in their direction," the Police Service of Northern Ireland said in a statement. Some of the 17 officers injured had required hospital treatment. 'Racist thuggery' Five people were arrested on suspicion of riotous behavior while a sixth was detained on suspicion of disorderly behavior in Newtownabbey, 30 kilometers away, one of four other places including Belfast where protests erupted. Tensions in Ballymena, which has a large migrant population, remained high throughout the day on Tuesday. Assistant Chief Constable Ryan Henderson on Tuesday denounced the violence as "racist thuggery" and said it had been "clearly racially motivated and targeted at our minority ethnic community and police." The unrest comes as immigration is increasingly a hot-button issue across the United Kingdom – England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland – and in the neighboring Republic of Ireland. Some 20% of Ireland's 5.4-million population is now foreign-born. Official data showed a population increase fueled by migration of around 100,000 in the year to April 2024 – the largest since 2007. The last census in 2021 put the number of people in Northern Ireland who identified as Roma, a distinct ethnic group whose population is largely concentrated in eastern and central Europe, at around 1,500 or 0.1% of the population. The official figures do not indicate how many are longstanding residents or recent immigrants but the census put the number of Romanian-born people living in the province at 6,612.
