Punjabi film industry slams anti-India remark by Pak actor Iftikhar Thakur: ‘This may shut doors for other performers too'

Indian Express09-05-2025

Reacting sharply to a recent statement against India by Pakistani actor Iftikhar Thakur, who is known for his roles in Punjabi films, various people from the state film industry said they will not collaborate with him again.
'I condemn the recent statement by Iftikhar Thakur. Yes, we have worked together on many projects, but… a person who talks like this against our country should not be entertained at all,' actor Binnu Dhillon recently told reporters. 'The one who is against our country is our enemy too. I guarantee that I will not work with him.'
Addressing Indians directly on a Pakistani TV show on May 2, days after the Pahalgam terror attack, Thakur had said: 'Fizaon se aaoge toh hawa mein uda diye jaoge. Samandar ke paniyon se aaoge toh dubo diye jaoge. Zameeni raston se aaoge toh dafna diye jaoge. (If you come through the winds, you will be blown away in the air. If you come through the waters of the ocean, you will be drowned. If you come through the land routes, you will be buried.)'
Expressing his disappointment, Gurpreet Singh Ghuggi, another prominent face in Punjabi cinema, told The Indian Express, 'It is a really unfortunate statement. Artists are meant to spread love and unity even when situations are tense. Everyone has the right to support their nation, but literary figures and artists should always make efforts to unite. His statement is highly condemnable.'
'I don't think any director or producer from Indian Punjabi cinema will ever work with him again. He has worked in many Punjabi movies which were appreciated by the masses. So it means that he is also directly targeting his audience based in India… By this one statement, he has closed the doors for many other Pakistani actors who have been working in Punjabi movies,' Ghuggi said.
Dhillon said it is unlikely that future collaborations with Iftikhar will be allowed to release in India 'Those who are serious about this issue will definitely not work with him now.'
Singer, music director and lyricist Ravinder Singh Ranguwal, who founded the Punjab Cultural Society, said many Pakistani actors earn their living by working in Indian Punjabi cinema. 'Hence, such hateful talk is very unfortunate and highly condemnable. After hearing this, I don't think anyone will cast Thakur in more movies. We have enough talent here,' he stated.
Ranguwal is known for directing the music video Punjab De Puttar, featuring Pakistani singer Akram Rahi and Indian singer-songwriter Pammi Bai, as part of efforts to bring together artistic talent from across the border.
Iftikhar Thakur played major roles in Punjabi films such as Chal Mera Putt (2019) and its two sequels released in 2020 and 2021. He was also part of movies like Sidhus of Southall, Annhi Dea Mazaak Ae, and Ma Da Laadla, all of which were shot abroad, mainly in the UK.
Pakistani actors, including Nasir Chinyoti, Naseem Vicky, and Zafri Khan, have also been seen in Punjabi films, appearing only in scenes shot outside India. Since the 2019 Pulwama attack, Bollywood has imposed an unofficial ban on Pakistani actors but the Punjabi industry in the country has continued to offer them roles that are mostly shot outside India.

‘What did I say!' Check Rana Daggubati's reaction when he realised he was abusing Venkatesh in Rana Naidu Season 2

As fans eagerly await the release of Rana Naidu Season 2, actor Rana Daggubati shared a hilarious behind-the-scenes moment he witnessed with his maternal uncle, Venkatesh Daggubati, during the shooting of the show. Talking to The Indian Express' SCREEN, Rana said he didn't realise until much later that he was abusing his mama on screen in the first season of Rana Naidu. 'Shit! What did I say!' was the actor's first reaction when he learnt what his Hindi dialogues meant. 'Since it was Hindi, I didn't understand much of what I said in part 1. So I thought it was okay. It was worse when I was dubbing it in Telugu,' Rana shared. However, the actor said that since both of them were in 'very definite attire and look,' they were all fine. 'We're licensed to do anything,' he laughed. The 'Baahubali' actor said that ever since he became an actor, he had always thought he would work with his uncle Venkatesh. 'From the time I made it as an actor, I always thought I'd work with him at some point of time. I was really looking forward to what that project would be,' he told SCREEN. 'As a co-actor, he's pretty phenomenal and charges us to be better each time,' Rana said, sharing his experience of working with his uncle in Rana Naidu. The actor also added that the Netflix India series is 'something unique that came our way. It's not something he or I have done before.' 'These characters can just go on because they started from such opposite ends that you can travel with them across multiple seasons,' he added. Rana Daggubati also acknowledged that Rana Naidu is 'the only 'pan-Indian' show,' as his co-star Abhishek Banerjee rightly pointed out. Fans can watch Rana Naidu Season 2 on Netflix. The OTT giant will begin streaming it on Friday, June 13.

From DU Kirori Mal College to Kapil Sharma's Comedy Nights to Aamir Khan's old house, Sargun Mehta now pays more than 1 crore/year just in rent

Television power couple Ravi Dubey and Sargun Mehta have recently upgraded to a luxurious residence in the upscale Bandra West area of Mumbai. The duo has taken on lease an entire floor in the elite Freeda One building , one of the city's most sought-after and high-end residential addresses. Interestingly, this prestigious building was once owned by Bollywood icon Aamir Khan, according to a report by Bollywood Shaadis. As per a News 18 report, the lease agreement spans a period of five years, and the cost reflects the premium nature of the property. In the first year alone, they are set to pay a staggering monthly rent of Rs 11 lakh. The rent will continue to rise incrementally with each passing year: Rs 11.55 lakh in the second year, Rs 12.12 lakh in the third, Rs 12.73 lakh in the fourth, and Rs 13.37 lakh in the fifth year. In addition to this steep rental outlay, the couple has also handed over a security deposit of Rs 80 lakh, reinforcing the high-profile nature of their move. Their new residence places them in elite company. Freeda One is also home to notable figures such as Indian cricketer KL Rahul, seasoned actor Jackie Shroff, and prominent businessman Yash Goenka, making it a hotspot for celebrities and influential personalities. Outside her professional life, Sargun Mehta recently opened up during a conversation with a former student of Kirori Mal College, her alma mater under Delhi University. She fondly recalled her time at DU, sharing memories of living on humble meals like rajma chawal, spending countless hours in the auditorium, and often skipping her lectures. She humorously mentioned having no connection whatsoever with the library. Sargun also spoke about the bond she shared with one of her professors, Keval, highlighting how certain college relationships remain etched in memory. Academically, Mehta holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Delhi University. She had initially enrolled in an MBA course post-graduation but chose to leave it midway to pursue a career in acting. Her entry into the entertainment world began in 2009 with the television show 12/24 Karol Bagh, a family drama that marked her acting debut. Over the years, Sargun Mehta has carved a prominent space for herself in both television and Punjabi cinema. Her performances in films like Angrej, Qismat, Kala Shah Kala, and Saunkan Saunkne have cemented her status as a leading actor in the industry. Most recently, she appeared in two Punjabi films—Sidhus Of Southall and Jatt Nuu Chudail Takri, continuing her successful run on screen.

Documentary screening in haste, can jeopardise murder trial: Moose Wala's father

After British broadcaster BBC World Service released a two-part documentary, 'The Killing Call', on YouTube on the assassination of popular Punjabi singer Sidhu Moose Wala on Wednesday morning, his father, Balkaur Singh Sidhu, alleged that the screening in haste could jeopardise the ongoing criminal trial into the murder. 'The documentary builds a false narrative and maligns Moose Wala's image. It has been released online in haste for commercial gains and could jeopardise the ongoing trial of his murder,' Balkaur said after a function at Musa village in Mansa district to mark the birth anniversary of the singer, born Shubhdeep Singh Sidhu. The documentary was originally scheduled for a public screening at Juhu, Mumbai, coinciding with Moose Wala's birthday. However, amid growing controversy and legal objections, the broadcaster shifted the release to YouTube. The first part of the documentary is on Moose Wala's early life, rise to fame, and controversies surrounding him. The second part delves into the circumstances surrounding his assassination on May 29, 2022, in Mansa district. The 28-year-old singer was driving his jeep without police security when attackers fired over 30 bullets at him. He was later discovered slumped in the driver's seat. Canada-based Goldy Brar, who has alleged ties to the Lawrence Bishnoi gang, claimed responsibility for the killing and has since been designated an 'individual terrorist' by the National Investigation Agency. The case remains under investigation, with no convictions yet, while Brar continues to evade arrest. New songs runaway hits Moose Wala's family released three new songs of the slain rapper — '0008', 'Neal', and 'Take Notes' — on his YouTube channel at 10am on Wednesday. With this, the total number of songs released after Moose Wala's death touched 11. Each of the tracks had more than 32 lakh views till 8 pm and these songs trended on the top three slots of YouTube. Balkaur Singh said: 'We have full faith that the court will do justice in our son's murder. Unfortunately, all those who claimed to be standing with our family were seen giving interviews to the foreign broadcaster.' The Mansa court listed Balkaur's petition for hearing on Thursday but refused to stay the screening. Balkaur has named the foreign broadcaster along with two individuals, Ishleen Kaur and Ankur Jain, as respondents in the suit. The investigative documentary interviewed Canada-based gangster and key conspirator in Moose Wala's murder, Goldy Brar. The documentary has interviews with two senior police officers of Punjab and Delhi, who worked on solving the murder and arrested several accused. Besides the singer's friends, his former manager and journalists were also interviewed to trace Moose Wala's journey from a village in Punjab to the 'hip-hop scene of eastern Canada'. They talked about people in his life, his association with gangsters and circumstances. 'It's a story that takes us from the turbulent history of Punjab to the contested politics of modern India, and from the shadowy world of organised crime to a chilling phone call with the fugitive gangster, who says he ordered the hit,' the BBC World Service says in the video's description. Old video clips of interviews with Moose Wala and his father also find space in the documentary.
