Greece Signs Outline Deal with Emirates Airline to Boost Tourism

Asharq Al-Awsat02-05-2025

Greece has signed an outline deal with Dubai's Emirates that includes a codeshare agreement with Greek air carrier Aegean, the country's Tourism Ministry said on Friday, as it seeks to attract more tourists all year round.
The codeshare agreement will expand travelers' access to popular destinations, including the islands of Santorini, Mykonos and Rhodes, the Greek tourism ministry's statement said.
Greece, which sits at Europe's southernmost tip, is heavily dependent on tourism revenue that has come under threat from the impact of soaring temperatures, wildfires and floods linked to climate change, Reuters said.
Last year it nevertheless raised 21.5 billion euros ($24 billion) in tourism revenues, beating 2023's record of 20.6 billion euros. The Middle East is also seeking more tourists to help diversify economies that have relied on oil revenue.

UAE's power capacity set to reach 79.1GW by 2035: GlobalData

RIYADH: The power capacity of the UAE is expected to reach 79.1 gigawatts by 2035, registering a compound annual growth rate of 3.4 percent from 2024, according to a report. Findings from data analytics and consulting company GlobalData stated that annual power generation in the Emirates is expected to increase at a CAGR of 3.8 percent from 2024 to 2035, reaching 281.3 terawatt-hours. Boosting power capacity is essential for the UAE as energy demand rises alongside a rapidly growing population, which is expected to reach 11.9 million by the end of the decade, up from 11 million today. A significant factor contributing to this increased energy consumption is the high expatriate population, which accounts for around 88 percent of the total and drives the growth in residential and commercial energy needs. 'The power sector in the UAE offers abundant opportunities for investors, with the government poised to make significant investments in the expansion and modernization of its generation and supply infrastructure,' said Attaurrahman Ojindaram Saibasan, power analyst at GlobalData. He added: 'The anticipated increase in capacity is projected to occur predominantly in gas-based thermal power, as opposed to oil, where capacity is expected to remain stable. Manufacturers of gas turbines stand to benefit from this surge in gas-fired power capacity.' GlobalData further said that the climate conditions in the UAE are exceptionally conducive to solar power generation, prompting the government to allocate extensive tracts of undeveloped land for solar parks, including both photovoltaic and concentrated solar power installations. The report added that the UAE has the capability to not only meet local demand using solar energy but also cater to export needs. The country is taking significant steps to bolster its renewable energy capacity, especially solar power, as a core strategy to address climate change. It is targeting a clean energy capacity of 14.2GW by the end of this decade and is planning to invest between $40.84 billion and $54.45 billion to triple renewable energy contribution by 2030. 'Over the past decade, the UAE has experienced a marked increase in electricity demand, necessitating the importation of natural gas from Qatar,' said Saibasan. He added: 'In response to this growing demand and to diversify its energy portfolio, the UAE has strategically shifted away from exclusive dependence on natural gas, expanding into renewable and nuclear energy sectors.' GlobalData further stated that the development of mega urban projects, such as Masdar City and Expo City Dubai, also highlights the need for sustainable energy solutions. 'These smart cities are at the forefront of innovation, yet they also contribute to higher electricity consumption. Consequently, this trend necessitates the expansion of the electrical grid and investment in smart infrastructure to meet the evolving demands,' Saibasan concluded.

Co-processing can help Middle East become sustainable aviation fuel hub: IATA official

NEW DELHI: The Middle East has all the potential to emerge as a global hub for sustainable aviation fuel production thanks to co-processing opportunities available in the region, according to a top official. Speaking to Arab News on the sidelines of the International Air Transport Association's Annual General Meeting in New Delhi, Marie Owens Thomsen, senior vice president of sustainability and chief economist at IATA, said that the world should act now to increase the production of SAF to meet decarbonization targets. This comes as the region accelerates efforts to produce the fuel, with Saudi Arabia's Nordic Electrofuel-backed project announcing in January a Jubail plant targeting 350 million liters annually by 2029, using renewable hydrogen and solar PV. The UAE, meanwhile, aims for 700 million liters by 2031, supported by Emirates, Etihad, and Air Arabia. Emirates has secured over 3 million gallons from Neste for 2024–25 flights, while Shell began supplying SAF at Dubai Airport in 2023. In her interview, Thomsen said: 'The Middle East has huge opportunities for co-processing. What we are seeing across the world is insufficient production of SAF.' Co-processing is the use of renewable feedstock in conventional fossil fuel units. This method allows existing traditional fuel refineries to seamlessly integrate renewable feedstocks into their production processes without the need for extensive infrastructural changes. She added: 'If this co-processing happens, then boom — we have a SAF plant. Clearly, the Middle East is uniquely positioned for this.' Thomsen further said that governments in the Middle East region should create investment policies in such a way that oil producers will be more attracted to co-processing. The use of SAF is widely considered a crucial development for the global aviation industry, as most countries have stipulated targets to achieve net zero as part of their energy transition efforts. According to Thomsen, the world, on its current trajectory, is expected to produce 400 million tonnes of SAF by 2050, up from an estimated 2 million tonnes in 2025 and 1 million tonnes in 2024. Amid this projected growth, Thomsen revealed that the world would require at least 500 million tonnes of SAF by 2050 to meet energy transition and sustainability goals. 'On the current trajectory, we will be a 100 million tonnes short in 2050. That is a dramatic shortfall. If we do not address it today, this shortfall may be even greater by the time we reach 2050,' said Thomsen. She said this presents a challenge and dilemma because as long as jet engines power our flights, liquid fuels remain essential. 'Again, I repeat, the Middle East is uniquely positioned to help the world take a big step forward if we could immediately co-process. There are also lower-carbon fuels which occur naturally in the Middle East, which the world should explore,' she added. Thomsen revealed that the aviation industry's net profit margin is lower compared to other sectors, and expenses could rise as SAF gains. However, she made it clear that effective ways should be adopted to increase the production of the fuel, so that the energy transition targets could be achieved by 2050. On the opening day of the AGM, Willie Walsh, director general of IATA, also shared identical views, and said that sufficient government measures, including the implementation of effective policies, are needed to achieve decarbonization targets. He added that ensuring the success of the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation is crucial to offsetting carbon emissions in the aviation sector. Under CORSIA, an initiative launched by the International Civil Aviation Organization, airplane operators must purchase and cancel 'emissions units' to offset the increase in CO2 emissions.

Emirates boss slams planemaker ‘hand-wringing' over supply chain woes

The head of the world's largest international airline, Dubai's Emirates, voiced frustration on Sunday over chronic aerospace supply problems, challenging planemakers to take responsibility for late suppliers. Leading plane manufacturers Boeing and Airbus are months and years behind on new plane deliveries, frustrating airlines which want to upgrade to more fuel-efficient aircraft and launch new services. 'I am pretty tired of seeing the hand-wringing about the supply chain: you (manufacturers) are the supply chain,' Emirates President Tim Clark said at a news briefing on the sidelines of an airline industry summit. Emirates has orders for 205 of Boeing's 777X model jets, which have not yet received certification from the US Federal Aviation Administration. Deliveries of the 777X are set to start in 2026, six years behind schedule. Clark saw a 'glimmer of hope' over the certification of new planes, and that Boeing was indicating cautious optimism over its recovery in top-level meetings with the planemaker, he told an annual meeting of the International Air Transport Association (IATA). Last week, sources told Reuters that Airbus has been warning airlines it faces another three years of delivery delays in working through a backlog of supply-chain problems. Emirates has not yet seen a shift in demand patterns as a result of US President Donald Trump's recent tariff moves, Clark added.
