ASM Set To Evolve Into ‘Think And Do Tank' To Advance National Progress

Barnama16 hours ago
KUALA LUMPUR, July 18 (Bernama) -- The Academy of Sciences Malaysia (ASM), which has served as a think tank for the past 30 years by bringing together experts from various fields to mainstream science, technology, innovation and the economy (STIE), is now set to evolve into a 'think and do tank' to help drive national progress.
Its president, Datuk Dr Tengku Mohd Azzman Shariffadeen, said this transformation aligns with ASM's role as both a thinker and changemaker.
'One of our key ongoing initiatives is the development of a mission-oriented national STIE system. This framework will unify STIE projects across sectors, involving researchers, public agencies, industry players and the community.
'It also provides a collaborative platform for stakeholders to work together, ultimately producing greater outcomes and impact for STIE initiatives,' he said in his speech at ASM's 30th Anniversary and the 2024/2025 Fellowship Conferment Ceremony held here last night.
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof and Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Chang Lih Kang were also present at the event.
Tengku Mohd Azzman also emphasised the importance of expanding the number of Senior Fellows and new Fellows to broaden the Academy's collective intelligence and network of expertise.
'I hope all existing and new Fellows will be inspired to become outstanding contributors within this intellectual community. Together, we must act as agents of change for the nation and its people,' he said.
He added that although ASM is one of the youngest science academies in the world, it remains committed to identifying the best ways to serve the country.
Meanwhile, Universiti Tenaga Nasional Vice-Chancellor, Prof Ir Dr Khairul Salleh Mohamed Sahari, expressed his vision for Malaysia to become a regional robotics hub by 2030. To achieve this, he stressed the need to train educators at all levels to ensure future talent meets industry needs.

Over 20,000 Companies Use Sirim's Testing, Expertise Every Year

KULAI, July 18 (Bernama) -- It is estimated that more than 20,000 companies use SIRIM's testing and expertise each year, said SIRIM Berhad president and group chief executive officer Datuk Dr Ahmad Sabirin Arshad. He said this included the manufacturing, plastics, road construction and apparel sectors. "We have the expertise and facilities to conduct testing and verification at SIRIM, apart from that, we also collaborate with all government agencies involved. ''This is to ensure that what is used by the industries, including in terms of construction and so on, is safe for use," he said at the 2025 SIRIM Silaturasa event at SIRIM Johor here today. Johor State Investment, Trade, Consumer Affairs and Human Resources Committee chairman Lee Ting Han was also present. Ahmad Sabirin, who was asked to comment on industries that utilised SIRIM's expertise, also said that SIRIM had an artificial intelligence (AI) centre, which, among other things, provided training and guidance to industry players through a programme sponsored by the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI). "Through this programme, we are targeting industries that use AI under the Industrial Revolution (IR 4.0) ecosystem. "So, we want to ensure that this year, 40 companies will receive guidance and next year the government is targeting around 3,000 companies over three years, with the companies targeted to become mentors to smaller firms,'' he said. He said that the initiative, which was supported by the government, would ensure that Malaysia continued to progress in line with the rapid development of technology.

Hypereactor, Malaysia's First Solid-state Hydrogen Reactor, Launched At Pos Tibang

GENERAL TANJONG MALIM, July 18 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's first solid-state hydrogen reactor, the HyPEReactor, was launched today at the Orang Asli Settlement of Pos Tibang here. Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Chang Lih Kang said the launch marked a significant step towards providing clean and safe electricity to rural communities with limited energy access. 'The technology is not only stable and safe but also environmentally friendly, without noise or odour pollution like a conventional genset,' he said when officiating the launch of HyPEReactor. Also present were Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) Deputy Secretary-General (Technology Development) Datuk Dr Mohd Nor Azman Hassan and NanoMalaysia Berhad (NMB) Chief Executive Officer Dr Rezal Khairi Ahmad. Chang said the launch of HyPEReactor was among MOSTI's initiatives that reflected the government's commitment to developing advanced and sustainable green technology for the benefit of the people, including those in remote areas. 'We want to ensure that every home in Pos Tibang and other Orang Asli villages across the country enjoys the same rights as other Malaysians, (including) access to basic needs, education, healthcare and a good life,' he said. Meanwhile, Chang said that the HyPEReactor system could operate without relying on diesel, was portable, and had been developed using local technology. He said the initiative also opened up the potential for new business models for rural electrification and, in the long term, could spark interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), as well as create job opportunities in science, technology and innovation, especially for young people in Pos Tibang. Chang said the technology was in line with the nation's clean energy policy and reinforced efforts to support the National Energy Policy and the transition to sustainable renewable energy sources, such as hydrogen.

3REN Firms Up Partnership With InvestPenang On Penang Silicon Design @5km+ Initiative

REGION - NORTHERN > NEWS GEORGE TOWN, July 18 (Bernama) -- 3REN Bhd's subsidiary, Sophic Automation Sdn Bhd, has signed an agreement with Invest-In-Penang Bhd (InvestPenang) to accept an incentive package aimed at enhancing its integrated circuit (IC) design and development capabilities, as well as transforming its ideas into IC products. The automation solutions and engineering services provider said in a statement today that the agreement further strengthens the partnership between the two parties, following the memorandum of understanding signed in December 2024 to collaborate on the Penang Silicon Design @5km+ (PSD@5km+) initiative. 'The incentive package granted to 3REN includes monetary subsidies, grants, or payments for facilities and services provided by stakeholders under the agreement for a period of three years until May 2028. bootstrap slideshow 'The group intends to strategically utilise these incentives to contribute to and foster further innovation within Malaysia's semiconductor and IC design and development ecosystem,' it said. Executive director and chief executive officer Koh Dim Kuan said the initiative offers valuable opportunities to collaborate with local fabless IC design firms, electronic design automation tool providers, and academic institutions, while improving access to cutting-edge IC design and development technologies. 'Having worked alongside reputable counterparties and global players in the IC industry, we are exceptionally proud to solidify our partnership with InvestPenang through the PSD@5km+ initiative. 'This collaboration further reflects our strong commitment to nurturing future talent, as the group strategically advances up the semiconductor value chain, building on its solid foundation in automation solutions and engineering services,' he said. On Dec 7 last year, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim launched the PSD@5km+ initiative and announced an allocation of RM50 million to support it. The initiative is spearheaded by the Penang government through its agency, InvestPenang, to revolutionise Malaysia's semiconductor industry in line with the National Semiconductor Strategy.
